Wartburg Castle, located close to Eisenach in Thuringia, is also known as "The Castle of the Germans". But why?

As someone, who lives like 10 minutes away from the Castle, this video shows what privelege it actually is. To me living here has become natural and you normally don‘t think much about it‘s history. Thank you for pointing out the importance. After graduating high-school, I got my diploma handed over in the great hall. Still feels incredible and unreal😅

Ich kann das voll nachvollziehen. Habe 5 Jahre lang in Nürnberg gelebt. Nur 10 min entfernt vom „Reichsparteitagsgelände“ bzw der „Kongresshalle“ Bin auch jeden Tag daran vorbei gefahren. Es gehörte dann zum Alltag dazu

For me as a Swede, and I’m sure for many other Europeans outside UK, it would be very convenient if you in your videos not only give the English translation of German geographical names but also the original German names I’m used to.

For me as an American who speaks some German, I love the geographic translations that add richness and depth to the video, as well as helping me improve my disused German.
I’m Mexican, but some of my ancestors came from Eisenach, thanks for this video and for helping me learn a bit more about their culture
Great video. I studied at the University of Kassel on a Summer exchange in the late 90s and we went to the Wartburg and the nearby town of Eisenach on one of our field trips. I was very impressed by how historical and well preserved it is. It's the second medieval castle I'd ever visited, the first being Hohensalzburg in Austria, and the Wartburg's woodland location really brought out the medieval nostalgia. I've been to many castles in several countries since, but that one is still one of my all time favorites. I'd love to go back there someday.
My oldest is graduating highschool this year and our deal with our kids is when they graduate we will take them on a week long trip wherever they want to go in the world as long as it's safe. He wants to go to Germany and France so these videos are very helpful to me as I have barely left my state and never been out of the US lol.
I think we can tell by the "as long as it's safe" part. That is a very american misconception of the world. Don't worry most countries are actually safer than the US. :)
@@u.p.1038 well I'm not taking my 17 year old son to Ukraine or Russia or North Korea...those 3 are off limits no matter what given the issues going on. So yes he can go anywhere he wants except those 3 places because even with how screwed up the states are I'm pretty sure it would be an extremely poor decision to take a teenager to those 3 places right now.

I keep telling myself i watch these videos for the amazing history, architecture and scenery. But i'm RELLLY here for Hannah....
I was stationed in Bad Hersfeld 1980-1983 in the US Army 11th ACR as a Tank Company Commander. We patrolled the East/West border. I was stationed again in Germany October 1989 and witnessed the fall of the USSR. We crossed over into former East Germany in December… very strange feeling. We toured Wartburg castle at that time. In 2012, my wife and son met my older German friends from Bad Hersfeld and toured the castle one last time. I was 27 years old in 1980 and met interesting people in Bad Hersfeld: WWI veterans; WWII veterans (even SS). Now they are all gone and even my wife at that time.
A very nice video, which shows the true value of the Wartburg. Unfortunately, an important part is always forgotten. In the time just before Saint Elizabeth lived, a second castle was built only 11 km away from the Wartburg. This castle is called Creuzburg, which is located in the town of the same name. St. Elizabeth lived here for many years. It was her favorite place to stay. Creuzburg Castle is very well preserved to this day. On the castle there is a great hotel with a noble restaurant, a beautiful park in the courtyard of the castle, the well-preserved torture cellar and many great halls in which you can also celebrate. Creuzburg Castle is worth a visit!

my grand parents took me to several old castles mostly off the beaten path and all of them were just starting to be restored in the 80's but you go to some spectacular places i wish i'd seen when i was over there.
I forgot to mention that I wasn’t aware of the standardization of the German language happening so far back in time. Smart people. The French didn’t unify their own language until the time of Napoleon. My German grandfather died long before I was born, and watching this video brought me a little closer to understanding him and his country of birth.

I’ve read about Wartberg Castle many times but to actually see it was such a wonderful experience! For the first time I could actually “see” where Luther took refuge. The Elisabeth chamber was stunning. It reminded me of places that I’ve visited in Hungary. I’m sending this video to my husband who loves Wagner’s operas so much. The next time we see “Tannhauser” I will have this castle in my mind. Many thanks for a marvelous visit to this important castle.

The castle is breath taking. But the host reminds me of the beautiful actress who plays "Rose"on Downtown Abby. I also enjoy watching her videos showcasing the great castle's of Germany.
Wartburg is indeed spectacular and splendid! It is heartwarming to know it's been so magnificently restored to its original beauty. Hannah did an excellent job as our tour guide through the castle. It is awe-inspring knowing such famous figures such as Martin Luther and Richard Wagner were actually there. I wish all Medieval castles and mansions were so painstakingly restored. It would be worth every penny (DeutscheMark?)

Another castle owned by the Jumper and even bigger is the Neuenburg in Freyburg upon Unstrut surrounded by vineyards in a most beautyful landscape.

The best part of those german castles is their location, from the moment u see them to the point where u can enter the castle it may take a couple of days if one is on foot.

Sad that I missed that stunning Woman being in my State Thuringia! ;) Beautiful Woman! 😄✌️ True Story....on the Platform outside the Castle were People Can Look over the Landscape.....I found a Coin from the Weimar Republic 1923, Hundred Of Thousands of People stood on that Platform since 1923 ....but I found that Coin laying beneath the platform in plain Sight! Someone bend over the Fence back then and lost this Coin.....I guess. Maybe rain brought it to light.....but still How much Luck can have One? Me!✌️😁

Schloß Wartburg near Eisenach is my favorite castle . I m a Thuringian living abroad. Mostly Schloß Neuschwanstein or Schloß Sansoucci is more famous among the tourists . But I hope there wont get that long rows with Japanese and American tourists. It shouldnt get overcrowded. Elisabeth was a kind of nurse ( " our Florence Nightingale").

It's sad that in the Video Nobody Talks about the prisoner in the tower. A Farmer was there because He wanted to save his family. The nobles just did it to Show their power (in my opinion) I was in the tower and saw where He lived and it was ridiculous. Not even a cow would fit into the tower. But hey! The most important is the Outlook on the tower right? Every history has two sides
I wish they would offer a feast in the great hall. That would really drive me to visit that castle. I felt disappointed to see just chairs and a piano inside.

I never heard the expression "the Castle of the Germans". And I would more likely think of Burg Eltz which was on the 500-DM-note. Another candidate would be the Hambacher Schloss.

What amazes me is that it was built up there and that it wasn't destroyed during the war.
also, as you can see, it was rebuild multiple times. That's why there are parts/buildings in different styles. The style depends on the time, when this part was rebuild.
It had not much value because it was exposed during the world war 2.

Exterior stairs around the tower: perhaps the interior staircase is deteriorated to the extent it is too costly to repair? One of the questions I would ask if I ever get opportunity to visit the site.
Actually, most Castles built for military application did not have interior stairs in the Burgfried /This type of tower). You would have ladders or other detatchable stairs outside to be able to take them away and prevent enemies from reaching you.
Between 1466 and 1517 fourteen translations of the Bible were published in High German, and five in Low German. Raban Maur had translated the entire Bible into Teutonic, or old German, in the late 8th century. Between 1450 to 1520 there were also ten French translations, and also Bibles rendered in Belgian, Bohemian, Spanish, Hungarian, and Russian. 25 Italian versions (with express Church sanction) appeared before 1500, starting at Venice in 1471.

Yes, it is correct, there were already several translations of the Bible into Upper German and Lower German dialects before Luther. But none impressed the people of that time as much as Luther's work did. Only Luther's translation of the Bible had such a lasting influence on the development of a general standard German language.
@@wolsch3435 Got it. I just don’t care for the story that the church didn’t care about translations and was trying to keep the Bible from people. Before the printing press they couldn’t just hand out Bibles either.

I wouldn't be so sure about the triangular shape of the castle. The Wewelsburg in Westphalia is also pretty triangular.

I dont know, but i have a problem with the term that Martin Luther "united" the germans. Yes, with his translation of the Bible he made a significant step towards a "german" language. But also at the end the division between the catholic church and the prostestants led to decades of war in europe. Its one of those big "if" in history. What would have happenend "if"....
It’s the consequences of a little action, the reformation surely wasn’t meant to develop as it did. People back then wanted to prevaricate on the people who had different beliefs, ideas etc. The wars happened because protestants didn’t want to give up on their beliefs and catholics didn’t want to become a minority. Wars happen for the shittiest and stupidest reason, like the one with Ukraine and Russia. Russia just wants to incorporate Ukraine, is straight up just a shitty justification to kill random people, both Russians and Ukrainian.

Super place . WE have been there twice--Once in 1977 and once after Germany was re-united.There is only one problem . We were shown two very different rooms, where Luther is supposed to have translated the Bible into German. Probably they do not really know which room Luther used.
Maybe Luther already worked with modern technology 👉 a portable (and throwable! ) inkwell.. 😉
