Paul Giamatti, 2024 Oscars nominee for "The Holdovers"
Correspondent Lesley Stahl catches up with Paul Giamatti, the veteran actor whose portrayal of a curmudgeonly teacher in the critically-acclaimed film "The Holdovers" has earned him a Best Actor nomination at the 2024 Academy Awards. It's his first Oscars nod in 18 years. Giamatti explains to Stahl that he's made a career out of playing "complicated people" and "people with a complicated relationship to the world" - while playing the theremin in his free time.

We have to be grateful that we are alive in the era of Paul Giamatt. Great sit down.
I 100% agree!! He makes all odds his movies/series so watchable! He is incredibly versatile
*tti
The fact is Giamatti should have won years ago for Sideways...........
And yet amazingly, he wasn't even nominated.
He was brilliant in that. Shocking to know he wasn't even nominated!
Giamatti is an absolute treasure.
Sideways was twenty years ago. Enjoy life because time flies!
Sky is blue, water is wet! Thanks for the update!
What a GREAT MOVIE THAT IS!!
@@1927suAs is The Holdovers!!!
Yeah had no idea he was in his mid 30s when he did that. Thought he was older.
@@whitealroker He always looked older yeah. Amazing actor in my opinion though.
I loved The Holdovers such a sweet movie, incredible performance by Mr. Giamatti and De’vine Joy Randolph.
The most underrated movie of this year. I enjoyed it more than Oppenheimer
@HaiLeQuang I agree, the two best movies I watched last year were the Holdovers and Leave the World Behind. Sadly, there's not much more on that list that I will consider great. 2023 was a rough year for movies. Oppenheimer was mehh, and barbie... I mean what has the movie going experience turned into?
@@HaiLeQuangnominated for 5 oscars, far from underrated.
I'd love to see Giamatti take the Oscar. Unique presence. Whip smart and modest to a very funny degree. ("No, I am not Errol Flynn.")
I’d love to see him win an Oscar and make a full album of Theremin music.
I have such mixed feelings! Normally I would, and if he wins, I couldn't NOT be pleased (I've been a fan of his since American Splendor), but I genuinely don't see how you give him the Oscar over Cilian Murphy, who gave a massive performance in close to every frame of an epic three hour movie. He was truly stellar. I wish they could give two Oscars this year!
@@cethomas324 The Daytime Emmy Awards had a tie for Best Game Show Host more than once. It definitely could happen here.
He went to In and Out Burger with his Golden Globe Award? I love this man even more!
Almost identical to one of the last scenes in "Sideways" where his character shows up at a fast food joint with his rare bottle of wine that he had been saving "for a special occasion."
Simple and down to earth!
I Love that he went to N and Out. My favorite burger place.❤
One of my totem actors. Paul could dine out on Sideways and John Adams forever (first saw him as the make-out guy in Singles). Always wanted to be an extra in one of his films just to ask him if he ever considered doing a baseball movie since his father was the commissioner who banned Pete Rose. Holdovers such a great, throwback 70s movie - Paul a longshot but he'll always be an everyman hero of the screen to me! Long live the great Paul Giamatti! :)
Paul Giamatti was in Season 4 of Downton Abbey, as Uncle Harold.
What I really like about Giamatti is that he seems to truly enjoy being an actor. And you can actually seen that in his acting itself. Which is something not many actors can pull off I feel like. A very rare thing somehow.
Gratitude forever for Paul in Sideways, my favorite go-to comfort movie.
"The Holdovers" is one of the best films I've seen in years. Giamatti's performance is beyond words. Rooting for him to win the Oscar, although even if he doesn't, his work will be remembered for a long time. Randolph (a lock for the Oscar) and Sessa (who was robbed for a supporting nomination) are equally great.
I played a small part in the movie jungle cruise. Had an opportunity to chat with PG and he was a treasure of information and a gentleman. Appreciate very much the chance encounter with him. Amazing actor
A master of his craft!! Paul Giamatti is a GREAT ACTOR!! We’ve enjoyed his craft for years!!
"Win Win" is another great movie with Paul Giamatti.
Love and Mercy
a very good film
Win win is spectacular
He's always so delightful in interviews, he has a great laugh
Honest and a mind seeker too he believes in Bigfoot also!
How on earth do you sit down with Paul Giamatti and ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of the marvelous "American Splendor"?????
Thank goodness you didn't shy away from including that he credits Howard Stern as one of his big breaks. Such a great role! Good luck Paul!!!!
Cinderella Man and American Splendor should not be missed. For me Paul Giamatti ranks right up there with Steve Buscemi as character actors that made such an impression you'd hate to imagine watching the movie with someone else in their place. Neither will ever be mistaken for Errol Flynn - who cares? - and both will be remembered forever for their memorable characters.
My favorite actor without question, in 2008 I watched every week John Adams and he made me discover one of the most underrated historical figure, I read the book from McCullough because of how great his acting made me want to know more about Adams. I watched Billions from day one because I knew Giamatti was part of it and watched the Holdovers with my 17 years old son ready to go to college and it became our favorite film in 2023. I don’t think as an actor he can’t disappoint me and I really hope that he can finally get a wide recognition during a worldwide event. Maybe like John Adams he might finally get the spotlight he deserves
Yes❣️ I'm just now watching Adam's for the 1st time I've seen everything else he's done, he's brilliant. the podcast Chinwag is great too❣️
I hope he wins.
Same here
His characters in "Sideways" and "American Splendor" still feel real. Good acting.
I love Paul's performance in The Holdovers. I hope he wins.
He is so moving and amazing in his roles. I loved “The Holdovers”. I can picture Richard Dreyfus in the role if it had been filmed in earlier decades.
Like Mr. Holland's Opus? Ha! I wrote a sentence with all capitalized words.
Maybe. Richard might have been too coked and snarky.
Yea! They have some something 🤔similar similar quality
One of Giamatti's best perfs rarely gets mentioned: the lead in Barney's Version. A tour de force, with a beautiful supporting job by Dustin Hoffman.
I still have 1 min to watch of this video, but I doubt Stahl mentions it....Giamatti is utterly tremendous in that film. I saw that in a theater, moreso because I wanted to go to this specific theater because it was old timey and had a balcony, but the film itself is exceptional and Giamatti should have been nominated for an Oscar (and the fact he won the Golden Globe, but no nod makes the omission (and lack of recognition of the film) worse). But that's typically what happens to Canadian cinema.
Loved him in Cinderella Man. Hope he wins oscar this year.
Big fan of Mr. Giamatti.
Mr. Giamatti is at the apex of his craft; and for my money, one of the very best of my lifetime. (I'm nearly 70). One of his most underappreciated roles was in Cinderella Man. Critics lauded his performance, but it is rarely discussed. I thought he was astonishing, and brought a depth to his character, and to the film, that elevated it from an otherwise ho-hum boxing bi-op. And his work in "Billions" has to be one of the best-ever TV performances. If Paul is in something, I watch.
I absolutely LOVE Paul Giamatti. He truly is amazing. My desire is to meet this amazing man. Best wishes for Oscar!!!you deserve him sir🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💕
”Weird is allright.” Yes it is, sir. Yes it is. ❤
Ever since that "pinot noir" scene in Sideways, been a huge fan.
Yes! The one where they're actually talking about themselves. Beautiful, insightful, sly comic gold!
If there's life after death and you're only allowed to watch one movie scene over and over again for eternity it would be that one. "Can I ask you a personal questions, Miles? Why are you so into pinot?" And what follows. . . . acting at its most poignant. And Virginia ("Maya") Madsen!! What a dream!!
Love him. An American treasure!!
Sideways was a FANTASTIC MOVIE , everyone should see it! Its hilariously funny & sad & moving& thought provoking! And Funny !! Did I say funny??
Sideways is one of my all time favorite films. Serious and funny. I will definitely watch The Holdovers. Looks fantastic.
Great in all his roles. I still think his role as manager Joe Gould in "Cinderella Man" stands out.
Also loved him in The Illusionist, and especially Win Win. He shoulda been nominated for that one.....
Sideways is on my short list of perfect films. I could watch it once a week.
I recently rewatched it…very good movie.
Absolute perfection…the film has everything! 🥇🥈🏅
Also an Alex Payne movie. Similar vibe, ambience.
@@jinkim23 all his films are very good although "Downsizing" was a little uncertain as to it's focus
So agree.....an absolute treasure
I adore Paul Giamatti; he's a creative gem and so smart and charming.
I adore him in Duets. That’s my Giametti recommendation.
Saw it at The Varsity Cinema in Des Moines. I attended a High School Seminary in ‘79 - ‘83. Some of the Brothers and Priests were a lot like Paul’s character.
i love this man for all the obvious reasons but especially for his VERY sexy voice!
He’s got the momentum and sentimental favorite to snag the Oscar! Hope so
Give Paul the gold!
Paul Giamatti’s uncle Marty was my (very demanding) calculus teacher at my all boys high school. Seems like he had many personal role models to shape this character after.
Win Win is a great one with him, less known for some reason.
He plays the theremin?!?!?! That just made him a thousand times more cooler to me.
Didn't mention his role in "Straight Outta Compton"
That picture of him with his dad, bart, at his commencement at Yale was also used in the movie, sideways. The picture was displayed in his mother's room when his character goes there to steal her money.
Paul is my favorite actor. I love every movie he does. Holdovers was just wonderful! Ive seen Sideways a million times, never get to ired of it. Hope he wins Oscar for Holdovers 🙏
His John Adams was a true triumph both for TV and the history of my Beloved Republic. Little Steven says his Silvio Dante came from the wig.
Paul Giamatti should have won something, best actor for his performance with no doubt. Thank you Mr. Giamatti for those years you put your heart and love into those characters you played.
Paul Giamatti deserves to win an Oscar this year for "The Holdovers". A performance that can only be described as "Bravura".
Cried my way through so much of this film, laughed through the rest...Giamatti is fantastic.
Such a classy and talented man. I hope he wins the Oscar!
Holdovers is destined to be a cult classic.
you must know nothing about movies
I will always love Sideways!
The Holdovers was such a great movie….and such a reminder of my hs experience…..I went to the same type of school!
Great actor/acting never disappoints
Love him. It’s always a pleasure to watch him act.
Sideways will always be my favorite.
Excellent! I now want to rewatch some of his work.
Giamatti demonstrates to we homely guys that being marquee handsome is not a prerequisite for success In Hollywood. I find him difficult to look at and he’s not compelling as romantic lead but he does possess technique and range.
I love his voice. I named my cat Myles after his character in sideways
He has an unusual and distinctive voice. Much like Wallace Shawn Their backgrounds are similar as well.
Paul Giamatti is a film asset and one of the greatest actors of our time. He is such a delight to watch no matter what role he plays. He NEVER plays a part out of ego, or to make himself out to be the "star", and you can tell he never forces anything. He acts and provides EXACTLY what the story and characters NEED for the movie. He's not there to make the movie about himself, he immerses himself so much into the roles he plays, that he IS what makes the movies work, are memorable, and just remarkable. He is a national treasure, an acting phenom and a living legend. The Holdovers is easily one of the best films I've seen in quite a while. He deserves every bit of the praise and recognition he is getting from this role. I HOPE he takes home the Oscar.
Loved The Holdovers!!!
My favorite actor!
Just one of the best.
Sideways is one of my all time favorite movies. I still watch it all the time
He's such a great actor. John Adams . . . just wow!
I just love Giamatti
The Holdovers was my FAVORITE! They all were perfect in their parts. ♥️
He’s already won in my heart 🧡
He was amazing, moving and relatable in The Holdovers! I hope the Oscar is his!!
Love Paul G. My friend performed as grown up Hermoine in the Harry Potter musical in London and one night, Paul G was there in the audience an after the show ended, he came to congratulate her on her performance. She said he’s a really genuine down to earth guy.
Great actor !!!!
he's from my home town in Connecticut. We love Paul!
Fascinating. What a legend.
Yes he's humble and nice such a well to the point character actor, his roles have wide range hope he wins an Oscar for The Holdovers!
Private Parts 😂 he’s so good and Sideways.
Grateful for this man
Paul is a Northstar to many people. He's an artist for sure. Love you PG.
Was delighted to hear that he was justly nominated for his performance. Crossing my fingers for him!
he's Brilliant ❣️ Chinwag is great as well, look forward to every episode ❣️
not many people know that paul's father was bart giamatti - baseball commissioner who banned pete rose for life. he passed away a week after the infamous ban
Gracias por tus bellas palabras sobre el pueblo de México. Se me salieron las lagrimas, Jaime. Eso es los bello de México. La política es otra cosa. Excelente historia. Regresa a México pronto.
Such a great actor ❤
He should have won an oscar as Pigvomit
Paul is like the Phil Collins of acting. I mean that as the highest compliment possible.
That was honestly adorable to say. Both Paul and Phil are phenomenal at their crafts. 💘
@@Ashley-Renae1989 I'm a big fan of both. Not to be a cliche, but they have that everyman quality don't they.
For some reason, I always feel a protectiveness over Phil Collins whenever I read about him. He seems to always have a sadness about him. 🥺💔
Se merece ganar el oscar 💪💪
I saw Holdovers, it was an amazing performance 👏
My favorite actor.
Awe-inspiring 😊❤
Like this actor in the film American Splendor and more recently John Adams with Laura Linney
Love that dude! Great person and great actor.
Sideways one of my all times favorites - what a movie
One of the Best ever ....
Sideways is one of my favorite movies too bad I can't find it on Blu Ray! The Holdovers is pretty good, too
Payne said they are remastering it for 20th anniversary. This year!
One of my favorite actors. He was incredible as John Adams. Sideways was 🙌🏻👌🏻
Only 59? With that smile? I mean...seriously, he looks and acts like he's 49 (or younger). But I'm more than pleased with the knowledge that he's 10 years my junior, which should grant me the rest of my years the pleasure of watching him portray characters growing older and maturing like a really fine wine.
How lovely to hear him say that he enjoys the odd. I do believe 50% of the population can agree with that as as well. So glad Paul G. stepped into the light and is sharing his brilliance with so many. I absolutely loved his performance in the illusionist. He truly carried that movie. There are no small parts when you can make them brilliant.
LEGEND.
