Lyrics
I don’t have to leave anymore
What I have is right here
Spent my nights and days before
Searching the world for what’s right here
Underneath and unexplored
Islands and cities I have looked
Here I saw
Something I couldn’t over look
I am yours now
So now I don’t ever have to leave
I’ve been found out
So now I’ll never explore
See what I’ve done
That bridge is on fire
Go back to where I’ve been
I’m froze by desire
No need to leave
Where would I be
If this were to go under
It’s a risk I’d take
I’m froze by desire
As if a choice I'd make
I am yours now
So now I don’t ever have to leave
I’ve been found out
So now I’ll never explore
So now I’ll never explore

    • It's so unique in how it sounds. Sure it fits into a genre, but it's not like where you go, "ah yeah this sound was popular from 200X to 200X or ah yeah, sounds like a song from early [era]." I think those bold, simple riffs on the guitar that cut through everything really contributes. It's not just some droning rythm in the background. It plays really well with the vocals.

    • Nothing is ever ahead of its time. Especially not in 2009. There had been music a great deal more complicated and whatever else a long long time before this came along. I loved this album but to say it was ahead of it's time is just ridiculous.

  • "I am yours now, so now I don't ever have to leave / I've been found out, so now I'll never explore" This like a couple of the XX's songs seems to be about conflicting aspects of a romantic relationship; while in the beginning everything fits together perfectly and the lyrics echo the sentiment of being fulfilled - "I don't have to leave anymore, all I have is right here / spent my nights and days before, searching the world for what's right here" - over the course of time things start to break down. The middle part of the song seems to be about questioning the relationship; "That bridge is on fire back the way I came... where would I be if this were to go under" doesn't suggest a commitment out of love, but more out of routine and the difficulty of ending things and/or finding something new. By the end the hook takes on a bit of a darker meaning to me, "so now I don't ever have to leave" sounds more like resignation to a life sentence than an expression of contentment.

    @osiris0413@osiris04137 жыл бұрын
    • I always interpreted the song as finding "the one" and being completely devoted to someone, rather than resigning yourself to the relationship. "That bridge is on fire..." symbolises, to me, never wanting to go back to the time or life you had before meeting this person you're with. "Where would I be if this were to go under?" to me, is thinking out loud "where would I be without you" and wondering how you'd cope if the relationship ended because this other person is absolutely everything to you "but that's the risk I take" to be with the person. "I am yours now, so now I don't ever have to leave" as they are both singing this together toward the end of the song I always take this as a reassurance from both sides, to each other, that we pretty much belong together and it doesn't have to change if we don't let shit get in the way.

    • Delroy the hint that it might not be the case is the line “so now I’ll never explore”, it’s not sang with love or relieve, but more like a realization that they will never get to explore and try new things, they’re stuck....

    • The first time you hear "So now I'll never explore", you think it's about finding the right one and you don't have to search for better anymore. When you hear it after the second verse, you slowly understand that she is trapped in his love for her, so finding another one and breaking up with him, as much as she wants to, can be extremely difficult for her AND for him. You can also hear the beat slowly deteriorating. Time after time, you hear reversed samples and unnecessary bass lines that just don't sound right. Such a creative track!

  • This video and song in my opinion is a masterpiece, the idea of relationships being like islands and the bridge to the previous being set on fire. The video with the subtle changes in girls dancers representing her love fading while the guy for most of the song continues along obliviously until she finally has left... Then the final dance with just the girl who would dance with the guy at the back dancing by herself while the set burns around her representing that the guy was still in love with her but it's over now... That's what I've taken from it anyway, literally a masterpiece.

    @stephenholmes9386@stephenholmes93868 жыл бұрын
    • +Stephen Holmes That's pretty much what I picked up form the visuals, too. I prefer subtle progression to blatant visual indicators; narratively I think of secret lovers or cheaters who were clearly in the wrong relationship to begin with as the bridge to the old island slowly crumbles. But now they've been found out, they belong to eachother, so there is no more slipping away back home to the old partner. They burn, but they burn together

      @SobrietyandSolace@SobrietyandSolace8 жыл бұрын
    • +Little Wolf Taima The repetition could also represent cycles of multiple failed relationships, rather than just the decline of one, emphasising how THIS ONE is 'it' whether it's right or wrong

      @SobrietyandSolace@SobrietyandSolace8 жыл бұрын
    • +Little Wolf Taima the repetitions could also mean the sequence of love. we experience it as something repetitive yet we love that person so that repetition wont easily bore us. the dancers in my perspective represent emotions and love. then the changes in the repetition shows us how love for others will slowly fade will the other one doesnt.

    • Hmm, the video is definitely about the end of a relationship. But that's a rather surface level reading of the lyrics. I think "i have been found out" talks about the inherent fear in any relationship that this is it, you will no longer explore (date). It's a bittersweet realization that the voice won't date anymore, a realization that comes with a lot of anxiety that often leads to cold feet. We are all islands exploring until we begin a relationship, then we lose some of our individuality.

      @aliar86@aliar865 жыл бұрын
  • I really need to stop reading comments. The amount of braindead idiots complaining about how the video is "repetitive" is fucking alarming. I didn't even think this video was that difficult to understand, yet no one seems to see how it compliments the song beautifully and brilliantly. I guess no one gets what the song is about either. My entire life revolves around music and I've seen countless music videos from every genre, yet this is one of the only music videos that always makes me tear up every time I watch it.

    • +Mitchell Steckbauer Hmm, it's a repeated camera move instead of a continuous one, contains focal length distortion from a lens and represents a real space instead of a highly abstract flat perspective from compositing footage, has choreographed dances that make up the majority of the video's content instead of differentiating clips of a single performance, and the story (abstract as it may be) actually has an arc that changes and has an ending. Yeah, it's not a copy in any way, shape, or form.

Estoy congelada por el deseo... Como si fuera una elección que hice.... Soy tuya ahora... Así que ahora nunca tendré que irme... He sido encontrada... Así que ahora nunca exploraré... Así que ahora nunca exploraré ...

  • The video illustrates the gradual loss of interest from the girl, her feelings for that person are gradually going, the kisses become less meaningful, her eyes stay open when they kiss closer to the end while his are fully closed. He's in love, she's coming out of it. Then its cheek kisses and then she leaves. I have only just realized this.

    @orhblin@orhblin7 жыл бұрын
    • the 6 people dancing doesn't represent 6 different people, it represents their relationship as a whole. The blonde woman slowly distances herself from the man and eventually they break up, the other 4 people represent their commitment to the relationship/their love for eachother. At least that's my take on it, it's still art though so everyone finds their own meaning in it.

  • not sure if this is how the xx wanted us to perceive this song, but I rly think the video coincides with the song. the song rly means something completely different with the music video. years ago when i first heard this song i thought what a romantic song but if u listen closely there isn't any emotion when she sings the chorus it's just stating that she is his/hers and that they will be together for ever. but personally what i think this all means (when u include the video) is that a false promise is being made. sort of like young relationships/young love. you think you'll be with your first love or partner forever and that you'll never have to leave them or "explore" aka look & find love in someone else which in someways can hurt an individual because they are being restricted. u see in the video that the blonde female dancer slowly is drifting away, but she's being held tight by this promise she made about loving her partner forever. on the other hand, the song could literally just be a love song and the video is just another creatively beautiful way for views to not only be left questioning the video but the song's meaning itself. rly makes you think.

  • The dancing pair in the background shows the couple's physical interaction, while the pair sitting in the front depict the emotional interaction. The pair in both the front and back are in unison initially. As the song continues, though, the girl in the front stops dancing and eventually leaves, and soon so does the man. But the couple in the background is still dancing until near the end. This means that while couple lost interest in the relationship, it still went through the motions in a desperate attempt to rekindle the love they once had. They fail. Basically the song is talking about how relationships can fail when a couple falls into a pattern of monotony that has no variation or passion.

  • Everyone will interpret this video differently but to me it's pretty clear how it's about two couples falling out of love for different circumstances. The one in the front because they're growing apart probably because of routine, the part where he keeps trying alone at first and then painfully realizes she doesn't want to anymore it's heartbreaking. The one in the back because of third parties who don't really love them but still succeed in breaking them up, that's why in the end the girl keeps doing the same as if she didn't care at all about the damage she made. It's beautiful, I fell in love with this song again after years of forgetting it existed.
