Taking My House for a Walk on Grumpy Camels

The Gabbra in Southern Ethiopia are nomadic pastoralists who live in a harsh arid region where camels are essential to their livelihood. Many are now settled and we were very fortunate to find one of the few groups who still had the knowledge to move their beautiful mat covered huts using specially trained camels. However, it had been a while since anyone had made a move so the camels were not at all happy about being roped into being roped up.

  • Thank you. Amazing video. Every one is complaining about the treatment of the camels... I am a great horse and animal lover. I am not sure if I agree that this was @busive. The camels are not pets, they're also very (!) strong and can have a bad temper (they bite viciously if I remember correctly). They will also (it seems) not sit down voluntarily for them to load the camels (understandibly the camel doesn't FEEL like working). So holding the head to the front was about stopping the camel from biting chunks out of people and putting the leg in a sling was about getting them to sit down quickly (so the whole ordeal can be over quickly, which is best for the camel, too). The load also did not appear to me to be too heavy (camels are very strong). The load did not chafe them and was well-balanced. I've been around a lot of horses when farriers put on horse shoes. Horses are considerably smaller and weaker animals than camels but can still become very dangerous (to people and themselves) if they put up a fight. The horse shoes are put on to protect (and therefore help) the horse. It isn't painful at all. However, many horses don't like being fiddled with that much so you need to use similar strategies to keep everyone safe (including the horse): you have to keep the head to the front quite tight so it can't whip around and bite the farrier. You also need to stabilize the legs (different strategies here) so it doesn't try to kick him with one of the other three legs while he's holding one up and putting the horse shoe on. Because the horse might fall if it tried, fall on the farrier and potentially hurt itself as well. It didn't look pretty and camels sure know how to complain but it seemed to me everyone was concerned to make the process as smooth, quick and safe for the camels as possible...

  • My goodness, I’ve watched a lot of your videos but this one is even more stunning than all others. How often do they move? How long did it take to build this house? Is it a multi-family house? Do roof and walls consist of woven grass? The rope looks industrial and new? And then the plastic chairs…..

  • Dear Mr. camera man, thank you for sharing the film. I have been eagerly expecting this footage as I have witnessed your endeavor for almost four days to film the incident. However, as a local guide, I am a bit disappointed that my contribution was not mentioned any where in the film. Besides what about another pastoral community whose village we had been to?

I do this because I am making a much more detailed study of their amazing mat covered houses and you cannot understand a nomadic building unless you see it in both its states, up and packed. But they do this for themselves when they need to move, and they were very happy to show me how it was done.
