Swiss Army Knife vs Leatherman - What do I carry daily?

Both Leatherman and Swiss Army Knife are popular multi-tools that have been around for many years. Both are versatile and handy tools to have in various situations. However, there are some differences between them.
Leatherman is a brand that produces multi-tools that are known for their pliers, wire cutters, and other heavy-duty tools. They are designed to be used by professionals such as military personnel, law enforcement officers, and construction workers. Leatherman tools tend to be larger and heavier than Swiss Army Knives, but they are also more robust and can handle more heavy-duty tasks.
On the other hand, Swiss Army Knives are known for their compact design and their wide range of tools. They are popular among hikers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Swiss Army Knives typically include a variety of blades, screwdrivers, can openers, and other useful tools.
Ultimately, the choice between Leatherman and Swiss Army Knife depends on your needs and intended use. If you need heavy-duty tools for construction work or other demanding tasks, a Leatherman might be a better choice. However, if you need a compact and versatile tool for outdoor activities, a Swiss Army Knife might be the better option.

  • I carry a Wave+ and a SAK Compact. I like having the pliers and the beefier blades from the Wave+, but the Compact balances out the things that I'm missing like a pen, toothpick, pin, tweezers, hook, and corkscrew.

  • I bought both a SAK farmer and a Leatherman Wave probably in '08, have basically carried the Farmer daily ever since, and typically only use the Wave for camping trips. 15 years later the Farmer works exactly as new, while the Leatherman has become noticeably sloppier and its second sheath is almost shot. For me SAK wins for EDC because its smaller and doesn't require a sheath that will wear out, and its also much more comfortable to carve/ whittle with, so its superior for bushcraft too.

    • Very good points and the reason I don't daily carry my leatherman (apart from the T4) due to the bulk. A smaller SAK in the pocket is perfect for 95% of stuff during the day! Great comment 👍

    • The two should not be compared. Leatherman almost always has one hand open capability on blades, and they lock. Being able to open the blade with one hand is vital to me, for self-defense purposes. Apparently, from what I generally hear, self-defense is not legal (?) in many European countries, which is freaking lunacy. 😨 Self defense is a human right, and if your government says otherwise, you officially live in a tyrannical dictatorship. 😬 Anyway, someone's pitbull got out and ran at me one day while on my bike. I was at a STOP sign, and the dog got up to me but stopped, barked, then ran away when the owner yelled at it. If that dog latched onto my arm, I would want a blade that I can open with one hand. People underestimate shizz hit the fan situations, all up until they're in one. Prepare and learn the lesson before the test, not after (if you live through it).

    • The wave has a diamond file on it to sharpen your other knives in the field. Wave also has multi driver bit so you can take your other tools apart in field ans fix or wash them. Leatherman has much more stout pliers, which grip far more than the smaller SAK pliers, which is good for untying tight knots, among other things where you need way more grip in a tight area. For those reasons I personally would not say the SAK is superior bushcraft tool. 🤔 Both have their positives and negatives. I'd definitely carry both. 😁

    • @@Northanteus I keep a small tool kit in my pack... pliers, sharpening stone, and nail clippers. While slightly bulkyer than the Wave it weighs less, the tools work better than their MT counterparts, and in combination with my Farmer I'm well covered. As far as dogs... if you let your dog rush me I'll rush it back, if its stupid/ aggressive enough to not back off I'll kick it in the head every time. I may be Canadian, and I take no joy in hurting someone's pet, but the best defense is a strong offence, regardless of the critter.

      @bushleague3472@bushleague34723 ай бұрын
    • @@bushleague3472 Sure, in that case, if you have other tools in pack to make up for not having the diamond file or bit driver on the Leatherman, I see your point. Guess I was just thinking in a hypothetical where you could pick one or the other and nothing else, but I'd say pick both.😁 As for kicking the dog (I'm with you on not desiring to harm animals, but if one is attacking you, there's no choice then), it depends on if the dog jumped at you before you could get to the position of kicking it? It'd be pretty chaotic with a persistent dog, but if is biting me, it will hate being pinched by my blade. 😬 Canada? You've also to worry about mountain lions / pumas / cougars up there jumping on your back when you least expect it. Another good reason to have a blade that you can open with one hand. 😳 Unless you carry a fixed blade when out in the woods?

  • That's great quality for that Swiss Army Knife Champ you have had for 30 years. I have the small Swiss Army Knife Classic SD I carry on my keychain as a daily carry. For my hikes and camping, I have a Leatherman Skeletool CX which I like a lot - great quality. I like that Swiss Army Knife Ranger though and will likely pick one up to have as a backup knife for camping. Thanks for sharing.

  • I have a Leatherman wingman that I keep in my FJ at all times. I use it a surprising amount. It has a lot of great tools on it but it’s not huge. I also carry in my little emergency kit a very small Swiss Army knife that I’ve had forever. It’s tiny but the knife on it is what I use the most and it works great for that. You know that I’m a gear junkie just like you. For some reason I have probably four knives that are in the FJ at all times. One for each side. Lol The crazy thing is, I use them all. Lol it’s awesome to see the gear that you carry and use. I’m liking these little gear videos. Very useful. Sometimes I don’t think of the things that you do and you make me buy more gear. Lol fortunately my budget keeps that to a minimum most of the time. Anyway, thanks for sharing MICHAEL. Cheers my friend.

  • I watched this morning a show on how Tim Leatherman invented & designed his iconic work tools. I bought my Super Tool in 1995 after I was let go from my employer (mass lay offs) I splurged my purchase & almost 30 years later I still rely on my metallic partner. I have fixed cars, video cameras & even my cousin's bow tie clip for his wedding suit. I was in video & film work for 10 years & my Super Tool was always on my belt. Now it lives in my car glove box - there to be used as needed.

We joked about the time I had to repair a video light during a filming break & only had my leatherman to make the repairs.

    • @@TheEmporiumOutdoors I very much like the super tool, I only have one complaint it’s the ergos, if you really bare down on it, your hand will feel it. Other then that its a great value considering the size and capability compared to the surge or Swiss tool which are much more expensive. I added a bit adapter and bit kit to mine since I deal with all kinds of fasteners at work. The bits are great but the adapter lacks a detent ball retention which allows it to slip off the Philips a little too easy for my taste. Still a good addition though.
