  • As a softball/baseball umpire, I've had this happen to me. About 20 years ago, a colleague and I were surprisingly assigned to work the championship game of a youth league in a nearby small town that generally never bothered to hire "real" (fully qualified) umpires. However, we were told that one team's coach was "troublesome" and that he had thoroughly intimidated the local umpires who were mostly inexperienced teenagers. Thus, we were specially called in to handle the situation. Within 20 minutes he was ejected for persistently arguing about basic rules he didn't know. He left the field and went to the parking lot. However, he returned about 10 minutes later and stood by his team's bench. The game was immediately forfeited. The convenor of the league thanked us for doing our jobs properly.

  • I’m a 50 year old AAU/HS BBall official, here’s a little dose of reality for you over the top little league coaches and parents. Have you noticed that most officials are 40 and older. This is because young people don’t have the stomach for your antics. Now this may not seem like a big deal today, buuuuuut when lil Johnny/Jenny get to high school your gonna have a huge shortage of officials. That or a bunch of older men and women who you’ll say can’t get up and down the field/court. Personally I don’t care if you act an ass with me or my older compatriots cuz we know jus how to deal with you. What I’m asking is that you give the young officials a break. Jus something to think about.

    • Very true. When I first started umpiring high-quality softball games in Canada in 1987, I was 23--the youngest member of our local umpiring association. When the association disbanded 20 years later in 2007, I was still the youngest member. Most newcomers quit after one or two seasons because of the abuse and the nonsense. This trend is common, I am told.

    • I am a 19 year old umpire that just started this previous Spring. Coaches and parents have turned my view of youth sports upside down, I hate it now. High school baseball is not too bad. Coaches are more respectful and players are around my age, so they relate and understand when I explain things. At the travel ball level I hate it. I am only in it for the money at this point. Through one year and probably only 14 tournaments or so I have been followed to my vehicle twice after games. Parents and coaches are ruining the sport that I once loved. It is unbearable, and officiating is going to die out because of it.

  • My grand daughter played her first year of high school level softball on a team made up of players from two adjacent towns, Neither town had enough kids come out to field a team, but together they did really well. The other town contributed a senior pitcher that was just dynamite. She threw 21 strike outs at an invitational tournament mid season. A few years later, she was back as an umpire of a game between the two schools. Her old home town's coach had a pair of absolute melt downs about her calls (she got them right) and she finally ejected him from the game. He put up such a fuss, the cobs were called to escort his off the diamond. To her credit, she didn't forfeit the game and let the action start again. The coach was fired before the end of that week. Thankfully a school board actually made the right decision on a coach's conduct.

      @DuaneCollicott@DuaneCollicott6 жыл бұрын
    • Everyone who's giving the "oh, what if he was dying?!?!?!" nonsense. Here's the viewpoint from another referee. In a soccer match, no-one can enter the playing area without the referee's permission. If a player is injured, the referee makes the call to stop the game and allow whomever is relevant to come and appraise/assist with the injury. If it looked serious, the referee could have indicated for the coach to come and help - but probably wouldn't. When something is really serious, you indicate for both team's physios to come on immediately but you also send someone to find someone with proper medical experience. Having someone in the area should be a requirement in an area like this, with so many matches going on - and the referee will have been informed where and how to find such help. Since he didn't do this - there's a 99.9+% chance that the kid was not seriously injured and the coach had no business being on that pitch. Referee was 100% correct to call the game. The coach will face some kind of discipline from the league and his team will forfeit the game. So, in the end it is the kids who suffer for his ill-discipline.....

It's up to the competition authority to decide what to do; they might pick up the game later where they left off, replay it, call it as-is, or say it never happened. One of the interesting quirks of soccer reffing is they never actually say who wins: they just report the score and events and let the league figure it out.

Aside from calling a horrible game, he goaded the coach into that reaction, cussing and putting his hands on the coach first. The team in orange was a U14 team playing down in a U13 bracket thanks to clueless tournament organizers. The black team was U12 playing up. 14 yr olds vs. 11 yr olds Some of the kids in orange were 2x the size of the other kids, and 3 yrs older in most cases. The kid that “didn’t even look hurt” got high kicked in the gut by the biggest kid in orange (no PK was given BTW).The coach, who was the closest adult and is allowed to check an injured player, did not react until the ref put his hands on him and cussed at him. Hold your nose and hope for better next time. It is what it is. 3. Jus like a poorly behaving player, coach or parent is no excuse for an official to behave badly, a official acting an ass is no excuse for a coach to behave badly. Second, he was not the only person who could have cared for an injured player anyway, or do you suppose that there were no other coaches remaining, or no other adults to step in? The coach was a fool who, for his own selfish pride, cost his team the game. There are no mitigating circumstances.

Something I am still not against him doing. Next, yes of course there would be other people who would have a duty of care for the players. There was seemingly no assistant coach so a parent could have stepped in but again, the coach still has a duty of care. I dont care if a coach has been ejected, he still has a right to go help that injured player. Bare in mind the kids are like 9 years old, this isnt top flight football in which you have other staff members on tap ready to go and help. There is either another coach (or more) who remains, or the game gets ended. _”I dont care if a coach has been ejected, he still has a right to go help that injured player.”_ He does not. _”This isn't about, ‘his own selfish pride’”_ I disagree. I think it’s _precisely_ about that. If the coach were thinking of anyone but himself-namely, the kids-he wouldn’t have acted out and gotten himself ejected in the first place. _”..it's about the safety and health of the players.”_ I think the coach used the excuse of a possibly injured player in order to insinuate himself after an ejection, and try to mend his wounded pride.

      @cardinalRG@cardinalRG3 ай бұрын
    • @@cardinalRG First off, I am going to stand by the fact that a coach very much has every right to go help that injured player, regardless if they have been ejected . A players health and well being is paramount and takes president over any ejection, game or end result, once that situation has been attended to then the coach can then leave. Too many times, as either a player or head coach, have I had to take things into my own hands for the sake of a player because of a referees inability to stop a game and make an injured player their priority. What a lot of people in this comment section needs to understand is that all those players go on that pitch health and should leave that pitch health. Coaches and referees are both there to help those players. You can think of it however you want, but for me, my players take paramount whether they are 5 years old, 10 years old or 16 years old. If I have an injured player and the referee brushes it off, fails to allow me to come onto the pitch to help or even try to stand in the way of the coach like this ref did then of course Im going to get annoyed and Im not surprised this coach got angry/annoyed as he's being told to leave whilst going to attend to a young player.

If you mean a _legal_ right, then yes, the coach has the legal right to remain on public property. But if you’re arguing that the coach has a right _within league rules,_ so that his team would be protected from forfeit, then you’re wrong. _”A players health and well being is paramount…”_ Yes, but again you’re implying that the ejected coach has to be the one to ensure that health and well-being. He does not. _”Too many times, as either a player or head coach, have I had to take things into my own hands for the sake of a player because of a referees inability to stop a game and make an injured player their priority.”_ Had you been ejected prior to those occurrences? If not, then your experience is not analogous. Were you the only coach on the scene? If not, then likewise your experience is not analogous. _”What a lot of people in this comment section needs to understand is that all those players go on that pitch health and should leave that pitch health.”_ That’s a silly claim to make. I’d venture that everyone commenting here understands that principle, and agrees with it. I certainly do, so you’re projecting a sentiment that I’ve neither expressed, nor do I possess. I’ll repeat this, so please pay attention-I’m arguing that an ejected coach is not exclusively empowered to ensure a player’s well-being. He can think good thoughts while stewing in his car in the parking lot, while other, trustworthy coaches and adults attend to the possibly injured player. _”Coaches and referees are both there to help those players.”_ Correct, but an *_ejected_* coach no longer has a role to play, especially if others are there to help. Please tell me-what unique assistance did the ejected coach in the video render to the player that couldn’t have come from other coaches? Is he an orthopedic surgeon, a sports psychologist, or something else that was irreplicable by anyone else who was there? _”…my players take paramount whether they are 5 years old, 10 years old or 16 years old.”_ Mine too. It’s quite presumptuous of you to imply that I or anyone else feels differently. When my son broke his leg in a youth football game, as I and his mother watched from the stands, we didn’t rush the field-where spectators aren’t allowed--and shove any officials. We let the (non-ejected) coaches and trainers attend to the matter, trusting that we’d be called down if necessary. Now, based on that experience, are you going to claim that we didn’t care about our son’s “health and well-being” above everything else? _”If I have an injured player and the referee brushes it off, fails to allow me to come onto the pitch to help or even try to stand in the way…”_ Again, you’re failing to address the distinction of a coach having been ejected. The video doesn’t show any non-ejected coach being disallowed onto the pitch, or any other non-ejected person prevented from rendering aid. The bottom line is this: the coach had the legal right to violate league rules, and return to the field of play. But the officials had the right, under league rules, to call the game a forfeit. Can we agree that if the coach hadn’t been fool enough to get himself ejected in the first place, then his return to the field wouldn’t be something for us to argue about?

It's supposed to be a GAME... the kids are there to have FUN... put the damn egos aside and just let the kids PLAY. • No, you don't get it. Most leagues have a "out of sight, out of sound" rule when it comes to ejections....meaning that once the coach was tossed, he was required to remove himself to a location where he could neither be seen nor heard from the field, and where he could not watch the game. Therefore, there was no way he should have been in a position to see that kid go down, injured or not. Even if the kid was injured, the fact that the team was allowed to continue playing tells me that team had one (or more) other responsible adults on the sidelines to coach the team and see to the players' welfare. They will be able to take care of anything that happens on the field. There is no need for "leather lungs" to be anywhere near the field post-ejection. I used to umpire Little League and Senior League (that's ages 13-15), and I can tell you it's most often not an ego or authority thing with a ref/ump. (Yes, there are some who come with a Napoleon Complex, but they usually do not have a long shelf life, as leagues soon get tired of their antics.) It's more a matter of the ref reaching his limit on how much verbal abuse he was going to take. The biggest reason for a ref to take a "no tolerance" attitude toward these sorts of antics is that once a coach (or parents) start the verbal abuse of a ref, the players quickly pick up on it, and pretty soon, you've got the players chirping and trying to show up the ref. Again, so what if that idiot coach wasn't around to check on his player? There were other adults running the team who could.

And there had to be at least one additional adult coach on the sideline, or the game would have been forfeited right then. Most youth sports leagues have an "out of sight, out of hearing" rule, meaning that any player, coach or fan that gets ejected is required to leave the area to the point where they cannot be seen or heard on the field. Coach Idiot should not even have been in a position to see that play, let alone come back to the field. What he originally did merited an ejection. What he did after that merits a suspension. I mean really, Biff. What part of "ejected" do you not understand? As a Pirates fan, I recall Jim Leyland getting tossed out of many games. I do not recall him ever coming out of the locker room to "check" on an injured player. I don't recall Earl Weaver ever coming back out of the clubhouse when one of his players would get injured after Weaver was ejected. It's amazing the lengths that people like you go in order to defend the antics of schmucks like this coach.

    • @@russs7574 As a pirates fan you should also know that Jim Leyland was coaching Adults. He had an entire staff of trainers and medical professionals to check on an injured player. In youth sports there are not teams of medical professionals to check out an injured player. In the video I did not see any other adult checking on a hurt child. Child safety should come first and only. Now I did see the coach lay hands on the ref. He should have been ejected. He came back when he saw an injured player. That was the right thing to do. I also agree that he should then be suspended. That is the appropriate consequence to the series of events. Now returning to the field to administer aid to a child is the correct and moral thing to do - he still should be held accountable for his actions. Do the right and moral thing does not make one immune to logical consequences to oneself. I do however have a problem with calling the game. I do not defend this mans actions (plural). But I do defend the last action of checking on the child. Laying hands on the ref is out of bounds at all levels. But even more at youth level where the ref is little more than a kid himself. And the outcome of the game should be of little concern as compared to the game itself. What I don't get is people like the commenter think that the health of a child has little merit and that the enforcement of god given rules has to be followed. The win must be the final goal and any child that is hurt should rub dirt into it and walk it off.

Most often, it's in the form of an ambulance that stays on-grounds until the last game is over. This bacciagalupe's assistants are just as capable of seeing to their kids' health, safety and well-being. I used to umpire Little League and Senior League, and there wasn't a game where each team did not have a minimum of two other adults in the dugout, and I'm guessing it was the same with this team.
