  • Slight mistake with the names of chacters in the Twelve O'Clock High analysis. Colonel Davenport is the commander who gets replaced not Gately who is the second in command.

  • Machiavelli: The Prince. "it is much safer to be feared than loved because ...love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails."

    • Damn no way. I personally have never been part of a professional organisation before, was there anything I said that was incorrect or that I should have addressed?

    • 12 O'clock high was shown at Surface Warfare Officer's School Leadership class in 1985! Also in Reserve Officer Leadership course, the movie Gettysburg was used as part of the movie to facilitate the discussion of leadership.

  • FYI: Twelve O'Clock High is also used in some MBA programs in the USA as a example of leadership in action and inaction.

  • Colonel Davenport was the replaced commander. MAJOR Gately was Colonel Davenport's 2nd in command.

  • 8:30 Is there some way where good leadership can be cultivated for the future? For the sake of humanity, what can be done that would bring good leaders at least eventually?

  • Not every enlisted man can think of himself as "already dead",I often muse over the different kind of officers ive served under or met from an enlisted pov and reflected on how I would do things as an officer personally. From a combat arms perspective presuming a kinetic operating enviroment. You would need to balance the well being and morale of your men with combat effectiveness, throw away enlisted lives too readily and they I guarantee you they will turn against you.. You will have to know how to interact with your men and know when to make yourself scarce. You have to rely on your NCOs and limit your own ego because especially if you are a fresh 2nd.LT ..you are the private of officers..listening to to your senior NCOs is key. In front of your junior enlisted men be seen being in charge but also be seen to be capable of compromise..you will build some respect this way. And if you suck at landnav just delegate . and practice on your own time..its ok..I suck at landnav too.

    • Haha I see, you raise some good points from an enlisted pov.
