UEFA Europa Conference League | Aston Villa vs Olympiacos | The Holy Trinity Show | Episode 176
Oh boy! Villa experiencing extreme adversity is a new thing for Unai Emery's mob, as they take a big disadvantage to Greece next week. The Holy Trinity show explores the big issues and moments that defined a match, which ultimately was lost between the ears more than anything. Pete the Canadian Villa fanatic attempts to offer a sober second look at a demoralizing day at Villa Park, while putting the club's overall achievements in perspective. There was a silver lining to Thursday, and that's Villa clinching ever closer to Champions League qualification.

Olympiakos is a huge European club! Show some respect!
I love your channel, commentary and analysis. As a Liverpool fan, I've accepted that "our" season won't have the magic ending many of us had, yes expected. But.... I've been watching Aston Villa games on NBC Peacock and CBS Paramount (yep I'm in the States) all season, and I truly admire what Unai Emery has orchestrated. Moreover, I am extremely impressed with the upbeat and positive vibes that I observe from the overwhelming majority of Villa fans on social media. This may seem bizarre but I was bothered more by Villa's loss to Olympiacos than Liverpool's running out of steam this past week. I am confident that Villa will be in the Champions League next season and I am thrilled for the club's loyal and gracious fans and supporters. Up the Villa!
Kind words good luck to Liverpool and new manager next year
Thank you for your well wishes 👍🏼
Such a lovely message, funnily enough, I'm a 3rd generation Villa fan who's always supported Liverpool in the title race (since Klopp)
Sounds like you want to be a Villa fan Mark… 😉 welcome to the pride!
@@pepperonikeith327. Yes, you’re probably right about that. I am a huge Emery fan and with Klopp retiring from the EPL, who knows? Up the Villa. 👍👍
Greek olympiacos fan here, sir what a great concept and show you offer, very professional. I like to add to your critics the factor luck. Villa had a lot of chances, it's not that bad as said, we had luck one time with us. The next game will be tough. Tough for both, a hardcore full red arena in our favour though.
Imagine being a 600+ million budget team, losing to a 100 million team which you obviously underestimated, saying its the refs fault while your 2nd goal happens 1 in 100 chances and miss a penalty after you caused a clear hand penalty giving the away team the upper hand again.
We had a really bad day at the office on Thursday and everything that could go wrong did go wrong but you have to give huge respect to Olympiacos. They came with a game plan, played some nice football, had a bit of luck and took their chances when they came along, so fair play to them. I truly believe that this tie isn't over yet but whoever scores the first goal next Thursday will go a long way in determining who goes on to win it. UTV
Great video from Olympiacos fan Hope you made it to the champions league spot only
😂 Only? 🙄
@@seanwilson5516ναι😊
Only ..we need this final in Athens...you need the champions league to become big...step step 🪜🪜🪜...
1. Olympiacos are a Greek Club. Greece is a primarily Christian Orthodox Country. This week it’s the Orthodox Easter that’s why there are no matches this weekend in Greece. They do that every year, nothing to do with Villa. 2. If you extend your body by throwing your arms and hands open while you are standing and this stops the trajectory of the ball towards the goal line then yes it is a penalty irrespective of how close the header was from. That is how the law is interpreted in most continental European countries. In England you allow Greco-Roman wrestling rules 🙈😂😜 in football…, but that’s your choice in your domestic competitions.
You said it yourself. You wanted to have absolute control. That exactly was your weakness. A bit of pressure on your defenders, a bit of mind games and you collapsed like a house of cards.
It is HOLY WEEK in Greece, so football takes a break, but the GSL (Greece Super League) has split into the RELEGATION and CHAMPIONSHIP playoffs. Olympiacos finished the regular season in 3rd and after 7 games they sit 4th with a game in hand
"sadly they don't do invisible fences!" Brilliant show!
Love your analysis of our great club, never miss your videos! Top Guy! Best wishes from Birmingham!
Well, to be fair, Greece doesn’t have league games this week because it’s Easter. Unlucky for Villa, but also can’t really be helped
Well not exactly (Olympiacos fan here btw). All clubs here in Greece have the right to ask for a fixture postponement if a team of the league reaches quarter-finals and forth in any European competition. Keep in mind that we as a nation never ever won any Uefa Trophy, the best we got is a lost Champions League final back in 70's with Panathinaikos !
@@generalskorpion07 I’m not sure what Olympiacos being able to ask for a postponement has anything to do with there being no games this weekend in Greece my man. Pete makes it sound like it was some kind of conspiracy. Teams just don’t play during Holy Week.
😂 I hope the players enjoy a bit of downtime and eat and drink excessively over Easter.
Olympiakos fan here. In your analysis you fail to analyze the opponent. And how olympiakos played. Sure the referee may have been a bit more like 40-60% for us but still there was another team in play. Olympiakos keeps pressure up through the game forcing some errors in the opponent’s lines and passes. And our mid line players are really good and pair that with an excellent striker you have a good recipe.
Yup your midfield pressure positioning you just countered and disrupted everything. I was just hoping that you guys will get tired from running and turn off the pressure because how you played the first 35 minutes it was looking that there is no winning that match.
Hello from Greece. This Sunday it's the Orthodox Easter, so no competition games are held. Also there is a league rule that states if a team is competing in a european QF/SF/F, they have the option to postone a domestic game, in order to better prepare for the important clash. No matter next Thursday's result, i wish you 4th place, I really loved the whole Aston Villa "family", and i'm sure i found my most liked EPL team (Next to Nottingham, because of Marinakis)
There used to be a fanzine called "The Holy Trinity" and you could buy it outside the ground for £1. The only time I can ever remember Villa overturning a 2 goal defecit was against Tranmere in 1994 but if you want to see an even more outrageous comeback to give you hope check out Sheffield Wednesday v Peterborough from the playoffs last season 🤣
Good thinking! Deano and Teale before Dalian near the end of the ninety minutes, three penalty saves by Bozza and dancing on the pitch with the kids and syblings afterwards. Can't get to Athens, actually in a rainforest in Peru but I will be dancing and singing if we can pull off a similar result. UTMV.
I was at that game with my late step dad, fantastic game before a memorable day at Wembley. UTV!!
Olympiacos is a much bigger team than Villa, that's to blame
Villa fans, Olympiacos fan here, you have a great and a very historic team and what have you achieved so far in premier league you should be very proud of . You are still though doing the same mistake once again. You are underestimating us once again. The performance you saw at your home by us is going to be twice as good at home. Reading all of these comments like 0-4, 0-3 or Olympiacos has lost many games at home with a big margin tell me which one in Europe this year ? Maccabi?? Fair enough that was one of those games and at the end we won 1-6 at their home that tells a lot, performance wise in our stadium we are strong even if we have lost. This time Olympiacos is hungry and thirsty we have nothing to lose. Villa has a game Sunday and you have 4hr flight to Greece and also the weather is totally Greece and also the weather is totally different which it is playing its part Once again nothing has finished like all of us in Piraeus say we don't even talk about the final . That shows how serious and with how much respect we're taking you and this game. I don't see that from you. We are not Sheffield United which you're lost home by the way . We are a very historic team in Europe full of traditions. Ask: Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Dortmund, Juventus, Milan and many more .... They all have lost from us being finalist in the champions league the year before. WE ARE OLYMPIACOS ! Maybe we don't have your money and your budgets but we have much more that money can't buy and you all going to see this on Thursday at the seats of our temple. Good luck to you all. May the best team wins

The way I see it is our offense did their jobs (Dougie’s missed PK aside), scoring multiple times and having one called back.. The back is what failed us. Olsen in goal and Lenglet were huge changes, enough to dig us a massive hole.
Keep the Faith! Only half time.
Let’s look at the full season if we assess Luiz. All in all he’s having an incredible season and still has room to improve. Are they really so many midfielders with his characteristics, ability to score and assist from midfield. Sure Luiz needs to get back to his best and his concentration needs to get back but I wouldn’t jump on the opportunity to sell him based on the last x weeks. We should recruit pieces to build around him, not use him to add multiple pieces à la Grealish which as we saw was not such a successful approach. In Jan we should have recruited a backup to Kamara as we saw before the window shut how having to drop mcginn or Luiz to more defensive roles negatively impacted the team level. I still don’t know why we didn’t.
Δεν πεξαμε εμεις σημερα γιατι εχουμε το πασχα μας!!
The Bailey pen shout, to me, was a clear pen. I could let it go, but the same foul was given against us in the second half. I also think that Olsen in goal (while accepting Emi being suspended) makes us play differently. Knowing Emi is behind our back line gives us a confidence that we lack with anyone else between the sticks.
Brilliant show Pete again.spot on with everything. Thanks.UTV.
Luiz plays bad when hes with his girlfrend when they was broken up he played at his best
Facts 😅
Greek orthodox easter on sunday.
great analysis on Dougie Pete ,he hasn't looked right for a while if he's to go I,m fine with it !
He gets garbage minutes for the weakest Brazilian team I've seen in my time. There's a reason.
Lenglet definitely pulled the defender back by the shirt. Unfortunately it was the correct decision. The Bailey penalty should have been given, imo. Yes the defender gets a touch but then stops Bailey from getting past him by pushing his leg back into Bailey's. The surprise is that there was no var check at all.
it's good to dream my friend.., but reality is 2-4 and Olympiacos has the chance to win again..!!!
Absolutely right about Luiz. Arsenal are in his head. Sell him
Arsenal-Olympiacos 2-3
He signed a deal AFTER their interest. If they were that much in his head he would not have signed that. He is human and simply had a bad game, it happens
Thank you
Missed tilermans and yes I saw luzi face before kick off he looked worried and not well
Like always elite analysis, thats why you are my favorite Villa KZheadr 💜

Dear why are you making excuses for the inexcusable? Let your footballer score in the penalty shootout, generally your performance was below par and as your coach admitted you were rightly beaten. Olympiacos is a great team and deserve the respect of football Europe. Good luck to the nice Aston Villa team and I hope they finish fourth and participate in the champions league! Greetings from Greece!
Luiz’s head hasn’t been right for weeks, coincidentally since he dyed his hair. Something going on off the pitch? He’s lost it too many times - look back to his suspension. He needs to wind it in and focus on the game objectives. That incident with Podence sums it up perfectly. I agree with you on Olsen. He’s not a bad keeper but I'm confident Martinez would not have conceded all four of those goals. Ultimately there were just too many mistakes all round, but absolutely Villa can, if they turn up, win away by 2 goals or more. It's not over yet.
😂 ya I think it’s the hair too … too much hair dye leached into his skull
Olsen is the key factor for me, our defence look uneasy whenever Olsen is in goal. That lack of confidence at the back bleeds through the rest of the team.
I agree with the Douglas Luiz conspiracy … just glad you said it before i did 😉
Dont miss next game ...Hercules and the Lion 🦁 in coloseum eeee Karaiskaki 🏟
I have been saying this to all my English friends... and across social media... that Aston Villa WILL and DID underestimate Olympiacos and entered the game arrogantly. I knew this was going to happen prior to the match given that every time Olympiacos faces an English team, it's always the same story. An Aston Villa fan I spoke with called us a mediocre team from a nonexistent league. Throughout the match, it was clear that Olympiacos came prepared and did everything right. Over time, this frustrated Aston Villa's players and left the fans in disbelief... "How could a mediocre team from a nonexistent league score 4 times in our home???" Because just like before the game, as well as after the match and across all the post game analyses... you continue to underestimate us. Olympiacos has been consistently playing in the Champions League since the early 90s, and only in the recent 3 years has started playing in the Europa League. We have played and beaten the likes of Real Madrid, Milan, Liverpool, Manchester United, Ajax, Juventus, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Porto, Celtic, Olympique Lyonnais, Olympique Marseille, Atlético Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, and Leverkusen. This is not our first rodeo. You do not respect us, which is why I can't wait for the Thursday match up.
EPL is overrated. Im glad Olympiacos knocked them out
A fine analysis again Pete. Cruelly disappointing as Thursday was and hard tbough it maybe to claw it back, it is indeed Champions League that is the real target for Villa. We seem to be going through an escalating series of crucial gamesbut the end point is in sight and I hope with you that this weekend can see us cemented in 4th place. Then, whatever happens in Greece, this season will be a spectacular success.

Fantastic work when are you coming back ?
I am an Olympiacos fan and I want to wish for a thrilling game back home. The 2 goals difference just gives a 50-50 flare to me since Villa has a much more quality squad than Olympiacos. I wish for a good game that both teams fans will remember. Cheers from Greece
Listen when we confirm 4th place this weekend boys will be up for the task at hand trust the process 🙌 🙏
🎉😊🎉😊 🎉😂🎉😊
The so called first goal you're talking about is disallowed due to a jersey pull and the refs had blown the whistle beforehand header which means there's no goal cause there's no continuation of the play. The penalty was a penalty, no one jumps with the arm throwm forward. The penalty Villa lost was lost before he had the ball on his hands, look at his face the doubt was all over it.
He is obviously blind and highly biased.
On the need for another defensive midfielder, which we need so badly. I saw a clip of Mats Wieffer of Feyenoord, a 1.88m 24 year old defensive midfielder, who plays a bit like Rodri. I hope we are looking at him. Love the show and the analysis that goes with it, keep it up.
Really hoping results go our way Sunday. If we have UCL wrapped up we can throw EVERYTHING at Thursday. Hopefully some players back too to have more off the bench.
Good luck with that 4th place, you got huge history and you deserve it. When you do so give the majority of that CL money to build up your academy. Give free gear and transport to prosperous kids up to 50 miles away, fix the training grounds and facilities so they can stay in, i don't know. All I know is that its gonna pay back multiple times and separates the great teams from the good ones. I'm an Oly fan and getting the U19 trophy this year with that kind of goal gave me hope for the next 10 years more than any player we could buy and this was more than a 20 year effort.
When a team underestimates a mountain like Olympiacos, now has to climb it. But its possible, 50-50.
We have orthodox Easter
Stating that the handball wasnt a penalty and that Rodiney delaing Douglas's penalty cause the penalty loss is a hilarious way to balme the referee. I agree that the first goal although it might have been a correct decision on paper, it didnt seem that it should be disallowed but blaming the ref of everything ealse is ridiculous
You rightly highlighted the issues that led to the defeat, the referee, inexplicable decisions, Dougie seeming to be elsewhere, the ludicrous Olympiacos player antics, delaying the penalty and why was Torres or Carlos not next to Konsa... Ah well, 0-3 in Piraeus will do it! UTMV
Dougie needs to get rid of "distractions" in his life.
It is Easter for us Greeks this weekend that s why we don t have championship games.
Great content , good job sir , just keep in mind that Villa has an estimated value of 650m and Olympiacos is at 110m your most valuable player Douglas Luiz costs 3/4 of Olympiacos i personally think the referee did a clean 50/50 which is rare in our days
Well my friend, based on what you say, the 2nd match with Olympiakos will be an easy one, after all, it was 100% fault of Aston Villa and the referee; Olympiakos was just passing by and scored. So don't forget to visit the Parthenon as well, it will be a nice combo, after all it is very common for the visiting teams to score many goals in Karaiskakis stadium! Come to experience the Greek Hospitality...
From 2:16 Pete is spot on. Top 4 > tinpot trophy that was founded 3 years ago Villa fans need to see the bigger picture
Nobody knows what's causing Luiz's drop off. He's also making a lot of silly challenges. All players go through this but we need him to pull his socks up asap because we need the old Luiz back!!!! Come on Dougie!!!!!!!! The ref was abysmal.
Olympiakos is a underrated team they litarly won against Aston villa
Olympiakos fan here and a general note: i like your team, offensively very dangerous, direct passes and continuous movements of players. Not impressed with the rest of the team. For a 650m team, you should control the match, which you didn't. Especially in the 1st half, it was unlucky for us not to have 2 goals lead. So what i'm trying to say, in big clubs (you included, since you have that budget), there is a shortage of quality players. Yes they are great athletes, with great physical attributes, but average in anything football related. Not asking for Messi quality (he's alien anyway) , but we all know so many quality players of the past. That goes for all big teams these days. As for the next game in our stadium, you certainly have a chance, Olympiacos is very unstable and inconsistent this year (we are currently 4th in our shit league, when we used to win it by 20 points ahead for years) and we don't (and can't) play defensively, it's in our team's DNA to play offence. So i think again it will go , whoever scores more lol .
Hi there Olympiacos fan here, I loved your analysis and huge respect for Villa and their fans. I thought you were a bit harsh on Olsen, he made two huge saves, especially the one early in the game that was counted as offside but was not and if it had not been for that, the var would have allowed the goal on Ibora"s header, while he bears no responsibility on the conceded goals as he was executed from close distance in the first two, then a penalty and then a deflected shot that he managed to get to. He is not world class, he might have been unlucky but I do not think that on those particular occasions there would be many to do better than him. Villa are still the favorites to go through, and Olympiacos usually fare better away than home this year, even though the atmosphere in Karaiskakis is tremendous. All the best for your PL campaign and you definitely deserve the CL spot next year
100% agree with your take on DL. He does seem to lack discipline in a lot of his games. It’s not just recently.
Your description of football fan is not me.VILLA are on course to win something big within the next few years ,I am happy waiting.
Why is nobody talking about the Ref during this game, no VAR for us ??
Great show Pete. I think that we are going to win on penalties on Thursday. 3-1 to villa in 90 minutes. 1-1 in extra time and we win easily on pens.UTMV!!!
It's not over yet Pete, we would have all loved to have a 2 goal lead going to Greece but we give up 2 goal leads faster than a boweing 747 can take off so in some sort of strange way it might actually suit us that we have to go there and score because we certainly can't defend a 2 goal lead so you never know if we can get the first goal it's game on let's keep the faith.. UTV...
Your point about Douglas Luiz may be right, except that shouldn't he still be focussing on getting into the Brazil squad for Copa America
Rodgers was fouled during game Bailey was fouled during game and ref had his pee poor game
Our defending of set pieces is a bigger concern
Olympiacos beat Arsenal in the past ..in the champions league. Why you people surprised with this Result???
Villa won the champions league in 1982. How come we’re only in the europa conference?????????
I’d love Tim to start in Athens and play Dougie further up. We’re in trouble anyway why not go for it.
2 goals and get the winning goal in extra time please. But i think were too tired to win anymore games now
Hi Pete, great podcast as Usual 😉 But I disagree with your view of a possible penalty on Bailey...yes, the defender gets a touch first, but Bailey still had the momentum to reach the ball evenso🤔he got tripped then by the same tackle🤔purposely.
At 7:11 you mean to tell me that no one is pulling on Iborra's shirt? are you sure you weren't tricked into getting these glasses because you definitely can't see straight. Unless you only see what's in your best interest, in which case I pass. Good luck in the second game but never think just because you lost a game that the referees are unfair to you.
We didn't play well at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Ref denied us blatantly obvious decisions, to help boost Serie A clubs coefficient rating for next season's European competitions, Italian clubs have previous for similar dealings
It was obvious that from the mid down Villa players were tired. Every time Oly pressured high you had issues. Pressure high is the key for the next game for Oly. Yes its a gamble but if we let you set the pace we're done. This +2 is not a big deal for the talent you got on your offensive side. Your defense was lacking. That fourth goal is not a goalee's fault by any means, you simply do not allow that kind of space at the box. It was a decent shot btw.
If all things go well on Sunday we can fully focus on Thursday and turn the Greeks over. Keep the faith! UTV!
Hey douglas had a nightmare he didint move right he looked tired uncomfortable. I think olympiakos was very very good to disrupt our game in midfield. Even McGinn was uncomfortable lost the ball multiple times. It was a mess but i have full faith in douglas i love the guy. Im not even angry from time to time you will have these kinds of games.
If we want to stay at the top level we can't rely on Kamara hes descent but not elite ,Ramsey the same they can remain but as back up seeing us in Europe at the lowest level has revealed some fine midfielders we could attract..last nite highlighted the need for a stronger full squad Olsen flapped at all the goals ..firing passes to forwards with 3 surrounding players is fruitless but we don't learn ..it may be that on reflection the score could of been higher and I wouldn't put much between them on the night ...we need Emi and pau back and a rested David luiz..look if we don't make it its kool its a learning curve Europe is no easy road and for 1st time effort we can be proud thus far..peace
Great video From Olympiakos Fan, I saw some guys has allready said its easter in Greece but...I am not so sure if its a advantige not to play the teams before you guys hade a reasting week before games against uss and dident help, but if you see Olympiakos europian season this year its a best seller novel coming back from 1-4 and making it 1-6 with epic goals voted allmost every round best goals and best player performance voted by UEFA wining with penalties in Turkey a game we should have finished at home....having to fight with the greek football organisation all season they have tryd to make life hard in all ways they can making the greece best player Kostas Fortounis to Quit from the national team having most assist in all europians competition this year and end resollt Greece not going to the Euros final stage having the chance to lift the trofee in home soil it will be like a great movie having the worst kind of endings. p.s Good luck in champions League next year👍
Didn’t Dougie crap out around this time last year as well? Maybe he’s only got 35-40 games in him a season? Maybe he wants to stay at Villa so he slacks off at the end of the season so no team will offer big £££ for him ;) Also, I’m curious if Emi was embellishing an injury with Chelsea…. Gives Olsen more game time and also takes the heat off him as they fans wouldn’t get upset at the 2 yellow cards.

I would hate to lose Dougie but if we're honest when they're out, we miss McGinn more and we miss Kamara more. We have generally coped well with missing key players, probably better than anyone else in the division, so I'd have no doubts we could sensibly re-invest money from Dougie. The only two players I'd genuinely fear to lose who'd be next to irreplaceable, are Emi and Ollie. I'm sure Douglas will find his mojo again but 2024 he has been below par, and since the Brentford game he's been poor by his standards.
I hope nobody take this guy seriously (even Villa fans).. You cant say there is no foul on Ibora dude..
the reason is that we have Easter in Greece , this Sunday. Everythig stops these days. And we don't play football or our favorite basketball, waterpolo etc... In England you have 20 times our badget , so stop complaining . Olympiacos has 3 derby (Against PAOK, AEK and Panathinaicos) in 10 days. If he wins ,takes the championship. If he loose is out of Europe next year
What did I miss? So far this and last season we have been awful taking and defending set-pieces. This is not a surprise. That's why I cannot pass the fact that Lenglet couldn't clear that long ball to make it a throw or a goal-kick but a stupid corner. And btw yes I can clearly see when he fouls the Olympiacos player before the disallowed goal by pulling his t-shirt. I have no idea why he is starting in our first European semi-final in 42 years but I can't wait for his loan to be done and go back to Barcelona. Also, enough with Olsen. We always concede 3+ goals when he plays. It doesn't matter if he plays 90 minutes or just 45, at this point, when Martinez is not available, let's play Joe Gauci and see what happens, surely he can't be worst than Olsen. Still hopeful to secure 4th place on Sunday against Brighton and this become the fuel to make an historic comeback against Olympiacos!!! UTV

there is a shirt pull on the disallowed goal sadly, you can see it at 7.11 even in this video.also if the hand is above the shoulder and it blocks a header with intent,we can see it at 7.51,flying to the ball like superman, it is hard to not be a penalty to be fair .only maguire can avoid such calls. We are so used to bad referees in EPL not giving anything ,unless top 3 team, then waiting for var to fix any wrong desicion but they wont undermine the ref, they never do,see everton vs forest game.in the rest of the europe it is usually the opposite cause refs take the action than play it safe and the var does its normal job.change a call than make it.
