The R 9800 combines flexibility and productivity to meet customer expectations as this Liebherr mining excavator comes with a choice of either Cummins or MTU as their preferred diesel engine partner, while an electric drive version is also available. The pairing of the T 264 or T 284 mining truck, with the R 9800, provides a cost-effective, highly productive mining solution for large-scale mining operations.

It now has an operating weight of 1000 t, 37.0 - 55.0 m3 bucket and Engine Output of 3360 kW (4,500 hp). For a few years Cat developed an even larger model, based on Cat 6090. It was called 6120B H FS and had an operating weight of 1270 t. The machine had a diesel-electrical hybrid engines of 4500 hp and a 65 m3 bucket. Unfortunately, only 2 units were made and they met many difficulties to operate and the project was eventually shut down.
