I still have my modded PSP slim, but I've moved onto Vita. A Vita can run it's whole library, PSP's whole library with everything a PSP can run (PSX etc.), plus it has some PS2 games, some Android games (like San Andreas, which runs great) and so much more. And I don't think I need to mention the extra joystick you get with the Vita (plus the very nice OLED screen with the first gen).

It will be cool if we get a cm5 with the same form factor, so you could just drop in a major upgrade, of course there will be more power/cooling requirements but still the prospect is dang cool. Would probably need to upgrade that battery to something larger though and need a 3d printed back cover. Have a dead psp1000 ready for some add-ons, probably snag the core components soon.

  • This is a cool mod and I'd deffo do it in any faulty PSP1000 I come across. Can't help but feel this should have been listed in the cons section: No PSP game support yet, and the ps1 emulation could also be slightly lacking when compared to POPS loading also available in standard cfw PSP. So while I'm sure it's a bump in power and will give better n64 emulation performance, it's also fair to say there is some loss in PSP \ PS1 performance too.

  • This mod shows that the PSP was an incredible marvel of engineering. Not only the construction as you can see, but the power of the device. A goddang PS2 almost, in 2004, portable. Their choice to go with optical discs was something only Sony would have the balls to do as well, and really allowed it to shine with all the graphics it can pull off and the depth of games. PSP's marvel of engineering aside, this mod really follows. That level of proper engineering of boards is as incredible as it can get and as an engineer myself, I know, absolutely love and respect the effort and ability put into this. And it's upgradable to boot, considering it's modularity. The only thing I could point as a change would be using the Memory Stick slot for the Pi's SD slot on the carrier board, and that sure isn't much of a thing to complain even. One funny thing tho is running PS1 games on it or PSP emulated, that's the silliest most roundabout way of achieving the functionality it already had, but of course that isn't the point, I can imagine this being a beast running Wii games even when the software support is there and the Pi compute modules get powerful enough. Imagine a PSP running Switch games? That would be crazy!

    @Kalvinjj@Kalvinjj6 ай бұрын
    • A raspberry pi priced computer isn't going to powerful enough to run wii games for the next 20 years. We are approaching the physical limits for shrinking transistors, and so pretty soon were going to have to just start making things bigger for performance and we'll basically have hit a hard limit on how much computing power a modern sized CPU dye could ever have. Not considering quantum computers.

Let's not even talk about N64.... But that's besides the point- this guy's development of a custom board by him self was a great feat and is probably going to work with future boards anyway. It's a project that I find cool for my own reasons but it's undoubtedly cool however you look at it. For on the go psp power I'd rather go with a pspgo anyway. • @@Queso305 When the Pi 5 is fully developed and community supported I think this will be a useful mod. However it is still going to be mostly limited to the people who want to find use for their broken PSPs. We are living in a time of oversaturation as far as emulation handhelds are concerned and nothing about the version of Raspberry Pi being used in the video is worth the effort beyond a very small group. I'm all for options, but Tito made this mod seem like a perfect option for retro emulation, while completely negating the countless other choices and even those software based for the PSP itself. I don't know what you used to struggle with your PSP emulation options, but emulation has come a long way over time and there is a reason why modded PSPs with proper emulation software fetch so much money online!

    • @Queso305 idk when you were in high school, but my PSP seamlessly emulates up to playstation with zero problems, with the added bonus of also being able to play PSP games. The PSP Go is a near flawless portable emulation console if the internal storage is upgraded, bested only by the vita. You can get better performance than this mod out of an anbernic or odroid product without having to do any work at probably a lesser cost than this mod will be.

The playstation vita only sold sixteen million units. This means that there's only one playstation vita for every seven people to share. Do you see why low level Or even cycle accurate emulation of failed systems is important? And why destroying the only units that can play these games By making unnecessary modifications to them natively is a bad idea? Not to mention the vita has a built in camera, microphone, motion controls, and the rear touch panel. All those things are rather difficult to emulate unless the hardware It's being emulated on also has those things. This is why preservation of the system is extremely important for the sake of archival.

    • @@thefool3424 as I explained, the analogue stick on the psp is terrible, not to mention there's only 1 of them. On the vita you're getting proper analogue sticks and two of them. This alone is reason enough. The psp version already exists now, it isnt like creating a vita version is going to delete the psp version from existance.

  • I think that the PS Vita might be the best retro emulation console(with only software mods). The main issue I used to have was with the locked down memory card, but OFW allows you to set an SD in the game card slot as the memory card. The New 3DS is a close second because then you can play DS games, but I don't often find myself wanting to play DS games I don't own.

  • A very nice project, but I'm not sure it's worth it at the moment. If this CM can run up to PS1 and N64 games, and maybe a psp emulator, it doesn't really offer much more than a unmodded psp in terms of power and systems. And one can always swap a better LCD, or a bigger battery, on the original PSP 1000 guts. Definitely interesting, indeed, will follow for future evolutions :) This can obv be a nice way to reuse faulty psps

A far superior handheld with a bigger screen, longer battery life, and no modding necessary (well , apart from software, of course.) if I attempted this with my sausage fingers I can guarantee that I would either rip the contacts off the board, or crack the screen, or something. The only way I would get 100% would be to buy 15 of them.

  • A big con for me would be keeping the mini USB plug. I know it's supposed to be a stock PSP from the outside. But I would have liked changing that plug to USB C. Or maybe have a separate USB C plug inside the UMD bay

    @ShinyRayquaza@ShinyRayquaza6 ай бұрын
    • This mod would be impressive if it had a simpler install design. A slim down pi board cut to fit a UMD disc base that can be inserted or removed from the bay, just like all other PSP games. Benefiting from a compact design, with an easy install all while maintaining aesthetic uniformity with the PSP. Best of all, eliminating the need to gut the entire console. I'm thinking of something along the lines of how the Dreamcast can have it's optical drive replaced with a physical emulator. Although this would not particularly be an alteration to the PSP, but something that is portable like any other UMD disc.

  • I stand by my opinion that this is a terrible and pointless mod. For starters you can install retroarch on a normal PSP. For finishers, it'll play PSP games WORSE than the original hardware. There is literally zero reason to do this. Just put a cm4 in a Retroflag gameboy case. There are 40$ handhelds that are more powerful than this too. Your phone is a better option than this.
