  • So many of these are favorites, but I still think the first one tops them all (Phantom Coach). I just adore the atmosphere the author created, along with the near-film-like visuals described so clearly, I nearly felt it was happening to me. You can't go wrong with a setting on the moors, especially in winter. Very few writers can still manage this today. Also perfectly narrated, as always. We are so spoiled.

    • I agree. Great point. These are excellent tales. I really like "The Phantom Coach" as well. I agree these folks knew how to write. There are few newer stories that draw me in like these older ones. These authors had a way of telling a darn good yarn. I also think their excellent grasp of writing skills and amazing descriptions of the environment add to it all.

    • @@donaldmccleary9015 When I first started listening here to Ian, it was strictly because of his amazing voice to put me to sleep. I had it my head all my life that these "Weird Tales" kinds of stories were written by hacks, and were not any good. Imagine my surprise when I began to realize that holy cow, these people could write amazingly well. And some of these stories are just phenomenal. Thus I am saddened these days when I read horribly-written posts online in various places (some by professional writers) that make me question whether good writing is even taught anymore. Don't get me wrong; I think there are great writers out there who still want to hone their craft. It's just that most of our society no longer seems to place any value on good writing. To wit: The recent focus on KZhead plagiarism, and all the folks who came out of the woodwork to defend the plagiarists. And I'm starting to rant, but hopefully my meaning came through. ;-)

  • I really enjoyed That Time of the Night. It is my favourite in this video. I can relate to it in a way that disturbs and disquiets me.

  • Thank you! This is awesome beyond description; like an entity from aeons past, only visible to those who have already lost their minds after witnessing the incommensurable horror contained in the dark walls of R'lyeh, and survived... Awesome! :)

  • You would be a perfect narrator for "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Walpole - 1764; considered the first gothic (horror) novel in western literature... as far as I know from Wikipedia.
