Wait, this millennium? You mean they didn't know they could just stop making movies after The Matrix?
Ex Machina is easily my favorite
Vanila Sky, I am legend, I robot, Lucy, Ai, Tron legacy, Zero Theorem, Equilibrium, The Time Machine, Tomorrowland a world beyond, Ultraviolet.
I know it would seem cheesy to have two movies by Nolan on the list, but Interstellar NEEDS to be on here.
Absolutely
Agreed!
I think The Prestige should be here too. If Denis Villeneuve can have two on the list, no reason Nolan can't as well.
Interstellar is way more watchable than Children of Men.
That’s what I was thinking. Interstellar is better than The Force Awakens in my opinion. They never said it was one movie per director, Dennis Villeneuve had 2 on the list. 👍👍
Edge of Tomorrow is so underrated, I'm surprised when people talk about Tom Cruise, they don't mentioned that much about Edge of Tomorrow. That's easily one of his best performance and he's surprisingly very funny in the movie
The ending was so satisfying aswell
His best film ever- it's the only Tom Cruise film I can watch over and over.
Agree.
His best performance is Les Grossman.
One of the few Sci-fi movies that i like it
My top 20 of 21st century 1) Blade runner 2049 2) Minority report 3) Upgrade 4) Dune 5) Interstellar 6) Inception 7) Equilibrium 8) Ex Machina 9) Star wars Revenge of the sith 10) Children of men 11) Moon 12) Edge of tomorrow 13) District 9 14) The Martian 15) Logan 16) Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind 17) Annihilation 18) Arrival 19) Oblivion 20) Mad Max fury road
Blade runner 💩
You must add Coherence, Source Code and Predestination.
Bro is freaked rn after dune 2
The Abyss
Interstellar is my all time favorite , as someone with a deep fear of everything that took place it really made you feel there with Matthew!! 10/10 recommend especially if u wanna see a realistic black hole
Wow this video was a real trip down memory lane. District 9, Arrival, Edge of Tomorrow, Inception, some of my favourite movies of all time. Arrival especially was so good. We really have had a lot of top notch sci-fi over the years.
Arrival Sucked Ass...
@@mandocalrissian4968 Not enough explosions for you? No lightsabres?
@@mandocalrissian4968 It’s a sci-fi movie for adults with taste not the basic mindless crowd.
@@mandocalrissian4968 You might not like it; I respect that. But don't confuse "I didn't like the story, actors, etc." with "it's a bad movie." Arrival is not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.
Interstellar way ahead than all
The exclusion of Dune, Interstellar and Avatar is absolutely mental.
The other two I haven't watched. Dune was dull.
Dune was a waste
Dune, I haven’t watched. Avatar and Interstellar should be in top 5. Well, maybe Avatar somewhere 6-10. Avatar is the #1 when it came to profoundness right after getting out of movie theater. But Avatar hasn’t aged beautifully like Interstellar has. Possible goat.
Maybe Maze Runner, Oblivion, Trasformers in top 10 !😎
Oblivion is a Top 5 sci-fi movie this century and criminally underrated.
Inception is my favorite movie of all time! Arrival is absolutely fantastic too!
after reading so many comments below it's really good to know that Edge of tomorrow has awesome fan base. Perfect sci-fi movie based on time loop. Some great performances from Tom & Emily. Although Inception is absolute best among them. Mind officially blown.
EDGE OF TOMORROW = MASTERPIECE Should be TOP 3 easily 😏
I wholeheartedly agree top 10 film for me
Especially when they put A New Hope 2 ahead of it. Tthree great sci fi films that didn't even make the list : Alita: Battle Angel, The Martian and Passengers all three are better than most of the list.
Totally underrated!
I definitely gotta share some love for Alita Battle Angel. That film was one of the best Sci Fi films I've seen in years! Definitely think this should have been in this list personally :)
Definitely a severely overhated film
Not in a thousand years, but it was enjoyable nonetheless
Meh, it was hugely disappointing as a fan of the anime/manga. They screwed a ton of shit up in that flick.
Abso-bloody-lutely! Best manga/anime to live-action film to date.
@@Axolotl_Mischief it wasn't what I was expecting does not mean it's a bad movie. You just don't like it.
In terms of realism, The Martian is hands down the best movie. Technically still sci-fi because they use technology that doesn't exist and do things beyond our modern capabilities, but it's closer to our reality than some people realize. I think the only reason it got an "honorable mention" and not a top spot, is because of the fact it's grounded in our reality and not that crazy, futuristic sci-fi.
Humans have been on mars for twenty years.
@@brian6391 if you say so.
I was a little surprised to see the Martian not somewhere on the list. The list is top 20 right? Anyway, it doesn’t belong in the top 10.
It's a good movie but as you said it's much closer to reality than a proper science fiction movie and it did aim to show a space survival situation as realistically as possible. It's more like the space version of Cast Away. Perhaps if they'd introduced some kind of alien element in the movie, like some kind of ancient Alien artifact that he discovers on Mars, but that would have then altered the whole undertone of the movie and taken it away from it's "mundane reality" foundation.
I don't even count The Martian as real science fiction, just a problem solving drama that happens to be set on Mars. Not something you could watch twice.
Inception is the definition of a MASTERPIECE. Easily one of my favorite Christopher Nolan films.
U are talking about MATRIX. Inception in aestethics and aproach is imitation of MATRIX
But not a sci_Fi film. More fantasy.
Kinda surprised about the exclusion of Interstellar, Dune, and especially Avatar.
Yeah me too...
Yeah, I'd have swapped Inception for Interstellar and squeezed Dune in there too! Inception is a masterpiece, but far less "sci-fi" than interstellar, imo.
ye and wtf does force awakens on the list and arrival is to highly rated
i mean thoes u said are all top 10+
Avatar is beautiful but not a great story
Interstellar not being in the actual list is a travesty. It's literally one of the best movies I've ever seen.
Literally came here for this comment.
Thank you
Sorry to disappoint you! If it was only a Top 21!

Interstellar was trash
Oblivion is so underrated, i'm not even surprised its not on this list because his fans don't seem to appreciate him in the sci fi movie genre but i have to say its one of his best movies of all time.
Agree.
Was just about to type a list of unmentioned movies and then decided to scroll the comments and yes .. oblivion . Clearly this list means nothing to actual sci fi fans
Children of Men has been my favorite movie since it first came out and to this day I say it was a travesty that they released it into theaters on Christmas Day. Also, Arrival and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had me in tears while sitting in my seat at the cinema.
Did you pick up that the timing of the infertility was exactly the timing of the vaccine?
Boring
Edge of Tomorrow should be up higher. Maybe even in the top 5. It's both thrilling and funny to watch. And it's one of Tom Cruise's best movies. And they should have Annihilation on here as well.
I'm elated to see people give Annihilation the recognition it deserves. It's my favorite film and I show it to everyone!

‘Inception’, one of the best science fiction movies ever made and also one of my most favorite Hollywood movies of all time. Christopher Nolan and the entire cast did an amazing job.
I don't see any other movie out ranking Inception at all in the sci-fi department. Just like I thought no movie would out rank The Matrix, but Inception did. Then again there could one and Christopher Nolan could do the job.
@@varunsrinidhi9061 interstellar imo is better but they are both good
Interstellar deserves to be on this list, would be considered one of the best movies ever when we’re looking back years later

I was ready for it to be number 1. That’s crazy it didn’t even make the list.
Interstellar is absolutely amazing
It was a fantastic movie for three quarters and then in went down a black hole.

How could u not put interstellar in this list. That movie was so good. It received acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, musical score, visual effects, ambition, themes, and emotional weight. It has also received praise from many astronomers for its scientific accuracy and portrayal of theoretical astrophysics. Since its premiere, Interstellar gained a cult following, and now is regarded by many sci-fi experts as one of the best science-fiction films of all time.

Interstellar is shit. Idk why people like it. Murph is the most annoying character with daddy issues 🤦🏾♂️

Really pleased that Eternal Sunshine is that high. I often find people forget it is science-fiction or just generally forget about it. It always seem to be swallowed by bigger more famous movies..
It's funny that you're talking about Eternal sunshine and forgetting 😅
Loved the list!! With each of the top 10 I was saying "Yup. That's one of my favorites." I know it just came out, but I would've at least given Dune an honorable mention. I think that ones gonna become a classic when it's all said and done

I was about to be all up in arms when I didn't see Children of Men on the list but I was pleasantly surprised. That movie was EPIC
No interstellar, Avatar, Dune. Y’all tripping. Ain’t no way this is a real list.
Avatar sucked
Interstellar's so overrated
Annihilation was a fantastic sci-fi film. It really does explore the idea of self-destruction.
I can't get that movie out of my head

such a fantastic movie. that film has some of my favorite cinematography ever.
Children of Men has ooga booga actors
Great list! I would tweak the order and probably have Martian on it and one of the others as an honorable mention, but solid work. (I would have Edge of Tomorrow a lot lower 10-13ish range)
Predestination is also worth mentioning

The only adaptation of a Heinlein story worth watching!
Children of Men was an absolutely eliteeee movie. I watched it countless times as a teenager.
Always wanted to smoke that Strawberry Cough the old man was growing 🤙
that's a good one, should definitely be in the list.
That movie is a roller coaster of emotion. I choked a bit at the baby being carried down among soldiers and rebels scene.
The plot is really interesting.
So glad I got to see it in the theater.
Pretty damn good list. Love to see the emphasis on emotion & storytelling.
i watched Sunshine in the cinema and i will never forget the 'Mercury' scene. Beautiful
I was happy to see some often ignored movies that were indeed great and deserved a spot on this list. I was sad to see Serenity relegated to Honorable Mention.
The whole time watching this I'm thinking what about Children of Men. Then BOOM! Children of Men! Outstanding
I'm surprised Avatar wasn't even mentioned - it was kind of a BFD for a couple years and changed the industry (and the price of going to the movies) It also helped the sell of BluRay discs when they first came out similar to DVD's and the Matrix in 1999. But the movie now seems almost forgotten unless the Avatar 2/3 sequels can rekindle that magic. Interstellar should also be the only pick for Christopher Nolan - I've never seen any of his movies as many times as that one - Repeatability!!
I am missing Alita and Oblivion here :)
I LOVE your list!! Sci-fi is the best genre ever!
LOVE Ex Machina. It’s the first film that 1. made me realize A24 is something special 2. prompted me to cheer out loud for an Oscar VFX winner 3. started our collective fascination with A.I. Interstellar is the only movie that had taken a tear out of me in my life . This is an amazing movie and honestly , it should be on the list .
Its the first time I have ever seen Children of Men on a list, its such a underrated film, it deserves much more.
I love to see the story of Dr. Wudi. He decoded the hidden message of the universe. He is a scientist, biotechnologist, and physician. He holds a very different view. He has an unusual Theory of Everything. He has been observing in silence since 2017.
Edge of Tomorrow should be WAY higher. 20 is a complete undervalue and should be maybe Top 10.
I can't agree that Interstellar, Annihilation and The Matrix didn't make it to the list.
I’m glad Edge of Tomorrow (just) made the list - Emily Blunt is always amazing and Cruise is less self aware than usual.
I know it would never get mentioned in a list like this because a. It's Japanese and b. Its a Godzilla movie but it's a huge shame Shin Godzilla will never be mentioned in the same breath as most these films. It's looks amazing for a 20 million dollar Japanese film, has some really quirky and inventive cinematography, and is a scathing satire of government bureaucracy. To top it off it even won 7 awards at the Japanese equivalent of the Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture.
My top 5 Inception Ex Machina Interstellar Martian Arrival
It's amazing how Eternal Sunshine is considered Sci-Fi, because it's actually a really lovely romance film. I remember watching it after breaking up with my ex and I really wished for that technology to exists.
What I love about that movie is That is the only movie that showed us that some people respect & want to preserve the memories, no matter how bad your relationship was, some moments were true & yeah I too want to forget my ex😂 but some memories with her, is worth every struggle!
Many sci fi are about relationships and romance, but they are still sci fi movies.
Watching it after a breakup really screws with your head
A romance sci-fi still considered as 'sci-fi'
hnmm.. but horror sci fi like a quiet place and the invisible man aren't considered sci fi....?
My top pick is “Edge of Tomorrow” which eminently re-watchable! The best Spielberg’s 8 Sci-Fi movies is definitely “Minority Report”! It’s relatable Sci-Fi and a great crime caper.
I’ve seen almost all of these movies. Great list!
Just watched upgrade (2018). Definitely deserves a spot on this list

As a big movie fan, I've seen a lot of films in my life. But now, I can usually guess what will happen next and how the movie will end. District 10 is already being maked

Never! They shouldn’t. They will kill it.
You lost me at The Force Awakens.
Children of men is a cinematic achievement..3 of the best longtakes in cinema history
Loooooove sci-fi. Thanks for this list.
Really good list. Puzzled by Force Awakens and why people wanted Avatar on here (that's like asking for a Marvel film on here) not that any of these films are bad, they aren't. Just I don't think greatest of the century applies here. I too mourn Interstellar not being on here, but that was probably due to A) Christopher Nolan already being on here B) Gravity kicking off the space craze. But that begs the question: why is Alfonso Cuoron immune to the one-per-list rule? Shouldn't Gravity (a GREAT film) be cut for Children of Men? Due to that being a PERFECT film. Actually, I guess it really isn't one-per-list because Denis Villeneuve pops up twice with two masterpieces: Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Maybe it only counts if it feels REALLY different. My picks for best sci-fi films of the century (that were missed in the video and comments, won't repeat the many winners I would've picked too) are Mr. Nobody, Triangle, Possessor: Uncut, i'm thinking of ending things, and if I wanted to be a hypocrite, I could consider Watchmen, but I should probably keep that off, otherwise Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Zach Snyder's Justice League, SpiderMan: Into the SpiderVerse and a whole host of other films are appliable I love but hate the toxic community surrounding it. If I'm gonna allow one "superhero" film, let it be Chronicle. Just avoid the fanbases alltogether in favor of an emotional explosion of energy of a film. It's basically live-action Akira. Throw Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane on there. Source Code, Battle Royale, Predestination, if you're looking for comedy go either The World's End if you want something sophisticated or Gamer if you want something fun and dumb like Crank. 28 Days/Weeks Later are classics. Ad Astra is a hidden gem.
that was a fantastic list! I've seen all of these except arrival, district 9, planet of the apes, primer, and minority report, but they're all on my "to watch someday" list haha. eternal sunshine and her totally broke my heart. snowpiercer really surprised me. I thought gravity was boring, but it was before I knew who Alfonso cuaron was. oscar isaac is great in ex machina, I was truly terrified of his charactern, I thought that he was gonna break the other dude like a twig for no reason haha. and children of men is like one of the best movies ever. the cinematography is nuts. also: I would have chose interstellar instead of inception. great list
Favorite Sci-Fi movie? Hard to pick just one. Planet of the Apes (1968), The Illustrated Man, The Andromeda Strain, Silent Running, Rollerball, Logan's Run, Soylent Green, Alien, A Clockwork Orange, and Phenomenon. If I had to pick just one, then let's go with Logan's Run. It was the last of the big sci-fi movies with a shiny, happy aesthetic. Honorable mentions, especially for those who haven't seen these: Somewhere in Time, Village of the Damned, The Invisible Man (1933), Island of Terror, The Gamma People, Brave New World (1980), and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. All good wishes, good people.

Sunshine is my guilty pleasure. Im 100% aware that final act felt forced for many people but I love the atmosphere of this movie too much to care. But i can understand it not making the top 20, the twist was a bit contrived. But hey, the movie is better than Force Awakens for sure. Force Awakens is so unoriginal it hurst. Death star 3.0, r2d2 2.0, Empire 2.0. Everything is recycled. There was stuff that could have evolved in an interesting way but they made sure to kill it in the following movies (like Kylo)
