  • In terms of realism, The Martian is hands down the best movie. Technically still sci-fi because they use technology that doesn't exist and do things beyond our modern capabilities, but it's closer to our reality than some people realize. I think the only reason it got an "honorable mention" and not a top spot, is because of the fact it's grounded in our reality and not that crazy, futuristic sci-fi.

    • It's a good movie but as you said it's much closer to reality than a proper science fiction movie and it did aim to show a space survival situation as realistically as possible. It's more like the space version of Cast Away. Perhaps if they'd introduced some kind of alien element in the movie, like some kind of ancient Alien artifact that he discovers on Mars, but that would have then altered the whole undertone of the movie and taken it away from it's "mundane reality" foundation.

But the movie now seems almost forgotten unless the Avatar 2/3 sequels can rekindle that magic. Interstellar should also be the only pick for Christopher Nolan - I've never seen any of his movies as many times as that one - Repeatability!!

Its a Godzilla movie but it's a huge shame Shin Godzilla will never be mentioned in the same breath as most these films. It's looks amazing for a 20 million dollar Japanese film, has some really quirky and inventive cinematography, and is a scathing satire of government bureaucracy. • Really good list. Puzzled by Force Awakens and why people wanted Avatar on here (that's like asking for a Marvel film on here) not that any of these films are bad, they aren't. Just I don't think greatest of the century applies here. I too mourn Interstellar not being on here, but that was probably due to A) Christopher Nolan already being on here B) Gravity kicking off the space craze. But that begs the question: why is Alfonso Cuoron immune to the one-per-list rule? Shouldn't Gravity (a GREAT film) be cut for Children of Men? Due to that being a PERFECT film. Actually, I guess it really isn't one-per-list because Denis Villeneuve pops up twice with two masterpieces: Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Maybe it only counts if it feels REALLY different. My picks for best sci-fi films of the century (that were missed in the video and comments, won't repeat the many winners I would've picked too) are Mr. Nobody, Triangle, Possessor: Uncut, i'm thinking of ending things, and if I wanted to be a hypocrite, I could consider Watchmen, but I should probably keep that off, otherwise Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Zach Snyder's Justice League, SpiderMan: Into the SpiderVerse and a whole host of other films are appliable I love but hate the toxic community surrounding it. If I'm gonna allow one "superhero" film, let it be Chronicle. Just avoid the fanbases alltogether in favor of an emotional explosion of energy of a film. It's basically live-action Akira. Throw Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane on there. Source Code, Battle Royale, Predestination, if you're looking for comedy go either The World's End if you want something sophisticated or Gamer if you want something fun and dumb like Crank. 28 Days/Weeks Later are classics. Ad Astra is a hidden gem.

Planet of the Apes (1968), The Illustrated Man, The Andromeda Strain, Silent Running, Rollerball, Logan's Run, Soylent Green, Alien, A Clockwork Orange, and Phenomenon. If I had to pick just one, then let's go with Logan's Run. It was the last of the big sci-fi movies with a shiny, happy aesthetic. Honorable mentions, especially for those who haven't seen these: Somewhere in Time, Village of the Damned, The Invisible Man (1933), Island of Terror, The Gamma People, Brave New World (1980), and Robinson Crusoe on Mars.
