I do have an idea why. Unfortunately, no relevant soccer analogy comes to mind, so that's all I can tell you.
Yup same
@@juliuscaesar8163 Yeah, that's interesting stuff. Anyway, my qrd: Nieman *is* a cheater, nobody so far can prove it to him. This was an excellent video on cheating. I have been involved in investigation allegations of cheating in the Backgammon world. You have to be so careful and remember that you are dealing with a persons reputation. When you say a person cheated, you should have to say how they cheated, not just, that you have a feeling. Maybe a feeling is enough to start an investigation but it should be a private investigation.
I didn't know Backgammon was played seriously enough to warrant such an investigation! That's pretty interesting!

As a statistician I hate the internet and everyone here
overall, in my experience of dealing with chess players, they are usually not very smart or decent people at all away from a chess board, and the better the player - the more it is obvious. Not the absolute universal rule, of course, but the tendency is there. To not freak out the statistician in you - those are mine anecdotal encounters, of course =) But gladly, the most vocal part of people (like here in comments) is not a correct representation of the overall average opinion
as someone whose only knowledge in stastics is elementary, you are stastically wrong about hating everyone

That Botez clip really illustrates what the mindset was around this situation. He’s either the best or he cheated. And he can’t be the best bc Magnus is the best and he clearly cheated bc how could Magnus make a mistake. Like idk how this entire community just immediately snapped on this dude because their top player lost.
Magnus loses all the time and no-one snaps. They snapped because behind the scenes he'd got a massive reputation for cheating.
@@allancouceiro9255yup
@allancouceiro9255 But it's OTB? I agree that people should be suspicious, but the game people are worried about is the one where they have admitted there's little to no evidence of cheating. It seems more like a cope to me despite the cheating online
@@jdudbdjxb7687 Nah, Magnus has lost tons of games, this is not how he reacts to losing. He recently lost to a 2500 player in Qatar and handled it fine. Even if Hans wasn't cheating in that game, the whole point is that Magus was AFRAID that he was because of Hans' massive behind-the-scenes reputation for cheating which he got by... well, cheating.
@@jdudbdjxb7687these guys are bad faith and disingenuous. They don’t care that he’s never cheated OTB, in their eyes he will always be a cheater for some autistic reason, as if people don’t change and as if greats don’t cheat the game at some point lol.
Hans interview at Sinqfield didnt do him any favours. He said he cheated online only in unrated games so he could get his rating up to play stronger players. Wtf. He also lied about the number of times he cheated which turned out to be a lot more than he admitted too. When you have a track record of cheating and lying its not surprising that a lot of people wont trust you again.
Just because he cheated so much doesn't mean he might be cheating . . . I mean uih
@@jr6200That's true, but after cheating and lying to the extent he has, it's no surprise people don't trust him. He can't expect people to just forget that he has admitted to cheating.
adding on to this, taking past events into account can help predict future events (inductive reasoning) but saying "he cheated before therefore he's cheating now" is a fallacy that i think too many people fell into. it's not about whether you trust him to not cheat it's about whether he actually cheated. and as more evidence came out (mostly the stuff in this video) it became more apparent that the entire chess world jumped the gun on this. the definitive answer wasn't about the trust of top gm's
@@jr6200 if your partner admits to have cheated in the past, it does not mean they are cheating right now... However, it means they have it in them to cheat. Some people do not do it by principle. Others will do it, because they are put into a situation where they feel like they need or want to. This is how i see it. I would never date a person who cheated, just because i am aware they have the capacity to cheat instead of talking to me. I would not want to play against a person like that as well. Just because you can never be sure, and, at your lowpoints it will fk with your head.
@@xxxpyrosxxxDoesn't that also mean that they'll also actually be honest and tell you they cheated? You can't take the "they cheated, so they can do it again" part and leave out "when they cheated they admitted it". Meaning there would be no need for accusations or speculation because they'll say they did it.
What frustrates me about videos like this is while the OP is being critical of all these people being so "obviously illogical", like 1 second later they will say things like "this rules out cheating" because the player didn't play only top engine moves. This mistake is made repeatedly by all sorts of defenders, the idea that a cheater must cheat constantly, when everyone knows the smart way to cheat would be to use the engine sparingly, in critical positions, and inconsistently. "obviously".
To me it’s obvious he’s cheating, he cheats to go against better players. Why? He wouldn’t be good enough to beat them without cheating anyways evidence num 1. He also scored 0 points and then out of the blue beat the best player in the world? Come on now, that is quite literally impossible 😂
@@Vision-fm8tc "Come on now, that is quite literally impossible" You're stating it's impossible to have a loss streak? That is a common story in all sports, at all levels. It's not that hard to believe that he was highly motivated after an embarrassing run. That Magnus can't be defeated by someone that is having a losing streak just isn't backed up by statistics, or logic. Your statement is an example of hubris.
Pretty much this. An entire video of "no evidence" except, yk, for the fact that Hans has admitted to cheating in the past. One of my favorite stupid arguments in the video is the one where Hans had this amazing improvement because he "played a lot" while other guys where not playing as much, forgetting completely about how burnout, tiredness from otb classical, excessive traveling and jetlag can affect the performances and improvements of players who play a lot. Its not just the fact that he "played a lot" its also the fact that he suffered from none of these drawbacks until recently. I also love how he completely disregards specialists pointing to how Hans is cheating, but talks about all the specialists pointing to how he is not as if those were all matter of fact. As if specialists in an area are always good, or in agreements about some result. Not to mention all the "no conclusive evidence". Like, unless Hans ever comes out specifically saying he had a plug up his fun hole, there is never going to be conclusive evidence. There is just way to many pointers to the fact that he cheated.
@@Vision-fm8tc Absurd. There is no credible evidence that he has cheated over-the-board other than the fact that he had cheated online prior to August 2020. Furthermore, cheating in a round robin, invitational tournament would be so difficult and so risky that it would be insane to attempt it.
@@darioalves464 You see how cynical your logic is though? Because someone cheated in the past, you judge them as permanently guilty, incapable of exoneration or actual improvement. You are essentially casting a branding iron onto someone and then chiding them for it.

Perfect video. I followed this closely and was shocked how everyone jumped the gun and believed everything everywhere. Ty!
Balanced and clear sighted analysis. Wish there more people like you on social media.
It really makes a difference when you actually sift through the evidence and more importantly, how it came to be. It’s so easy to just spew out a spreadsheet or graph with shoddy methodology behind it, because most won’t look into because it doesn’t fit someone’s presupposition. What really made me write off Hikaru was his constant vague insinuating and drama milking. Which ties into the benefit to be gained from this whole debacle. The acquisition of PlayMagnus by Chess certainly had some influence of the actions of Rensch. If Chess fumbled getting into business with a living legend of the game, it would’ve been a massive missed opportunity. The 70 page report was a big show of appeasement while trying to justify their own inconsistent rule enforcement. All of the drama surrounding Niemann at the time just seemed like one big pile-on. It didn’t seem fair. Now a watershed moment in the game and in Niemanns career is inextricably linked to having something shoved up his cornhole.
cumhole? Nah buddy, we don't use em like that. You do you tho.
The idea that you missed in this, is that a 2500 player that can go the the engine 3 times a match can beat a super gm, they had this weird thing in some nordic country where 3 IMs play a mystery GM in a green suit or something like that but they get to use an engine 3 times in the match and they won and then the gm reveals himself, it's kind of silly and fun but just checking an engine or knowing the eval is absolutely huge even if only done once or twice at tough parts of the match when players go into big thinks. That centipawn thing could be valid because you could be playing worse moves usually and getting slowly beat out on the eval but then playing a deciding line immediately after.
But that wouldn’t confirm their bias
The green suit has been called turquoise by the vast majority of players below 2509

Amazing. Keep it up. ❤
As a tournament player myself watching this video, what stands out to me is that you completely lack a reference point to understand why many players had the intuition Hans was suspicious. You aren't wrong that there's a problematic tendency to assume Magnus couldn't lose legitimately and constantly fluff him up beyond what's realistic (not to mention quid pro quo dynamics like where Magnus streams with Botez now and then and she talks shit about Hans), but there are also certain dynamics in a player's style of play that suggest they might be using an engine. You can't replace a chess player's experience with merely measuring centipawn accuracy. You also badly misrepresent the nature of the cheating allegations in this video. When you describe cheating in chess, you say it's like "playing god" and you control the outcome of the game entirely. This is false; chess is a game with some margin for error, therefore draws are by no means impossible for strong players to achieve even against strong engines. That may be less the case if those engines are configured specifically to find ways to unbalance the position and play for a win instead of simply choosing optimal moves, but doing so has several implications which might make cheating more conspicuous (e.g. playing on endlessly for hundreds of moves to extract an endgame error, or relying upon more easily detectable _sequences_ of computer moves instead of what was alleged). And most importantly, *the suggestion was that Hans cheated with only one or a few moves in each game.* A strategy like this makes cheating nearly undetectable and does not even vaguely approach your strawmanning of the accusations. If I had to bet, I don't think Hans ever cheated OTB at all. I accept that there is little concrete evidence for it and approve of the decision to treat him as innocent. However, I remain somewhat suspicious given how he played at certain critical junctures. I'm not talking about "quality" of moves, but more intangible characteristics about his ability to identify and make use of strange, seemingly unstable piece coordination patterns despite how rarely they appear in games) This indicates either unusual talent even among top players, simply a very unconventional playstyle, or engine play. Another important element you rightly touched on in this video is Hans' confidence. A lot of chess is psychological, and Hans' psychological willingness to accept and even perhaps expect that he'd beat Magnus seems like it could easily explain why he has an easier time of it than some of Magnus' steadier 'customers.' Hans' trainer's comments were also very useful, since they help build out the idea that Hans' anomalous play is partially attributable to a certain quirkiness of his approach to the game. Hans being so sanctimonious about it all _while lying_ during that interview by erasing the other times he had cheated online gave me the impression that he was very suspicious, and remains the worst strike against him. It is cause for concern even now. While I appreciate that you put work into understanding these events, given your ignorance about chess you should not be pronouncing any final judgement, nor signalling that people were wrong to be suspicious, as you're far from any reasonable standpoint to do this.
@@Scarmiglione379 Fall flat into the deep ravine!
Good comment, especially the final paragraph. The thing I always found lacking in Hans's dealing with the whole situation is that (as far as I've ever seen) he's never taken a shred of responsibility for why people don't trust him and think of him as a cheater. If I were him, the first thing I would have done in that first interview would have been to say "yeah I get that it's my own fault that people don't trust me because of mistakes made in the past, and it's up to me to walk the long narrow road to earn trust" but all he's ever done is act outraged that anyone dares to be suspicious of him. The fact that he publicly admitted to the things everyone already knew about painted him into a corner, then when the Ccom report said he'd cheated more than he had publicly confessed to his only option is to say everything is a conspiracy against him and that they are making it all up. Lying about the extent of his cheating in the very statement supposedly confessing to his cheating is about the worst thing you can do to gain trust.
nah i ain't reading all of that
The level of pettiness
You guys have
That was a great breakdown of the situation. I don't even play chess, but now I want to get into it
I followed the drama about Hans Nieman cheating and i came to the same conclusion you did. The different methods used to find if he was cheating or not never struck me as very credible, it looked a lot like you can reach whatever goal you want by breaking the data down a certain way. Its basically using statistics in a dishonest way. I can make a comparison with Tennis, it is possible to win more games then your opponent and still lose the match. Then you take that data to prove that he is cheating when he starts winning (if he does obviously). The centipawn loss was a really dumb theory on every single front, it showed that he was losing more centipawns then other players and that should prove that he was a bad player, but also that he was cheating. In conjunction that he plays very aggressive and often let pawns and pieces hanging when he thinks he can force the game to a win for himself and he does it so that his opponents will hopefully make a mistake and not see that he can maybe force a win if they spend their turn to take the piece, so often they take the piece which would lead to a higher centipawn loss but still a win for himself. I think it was very dishonest of Carlsen to accuse him of cheating without ever saying so, because it was clear that he thought he was cheating but he didnt want to say it, because if he didnt think he was cheating he could have stepped up and said so any time he wanted during the whole drama. He struck me as someone that doesnt dare to stand behind what he was saying himself in case of backlash or that he was wrong. Hikaru did a horrific job at actually doing any work, he was basically only reacting to what other people said without ever actually analyzing Hans game against Magnus, or even being fair minded to Hans in a lot of what he said. "no one analyses games like that if you are 2800 elo" or saying something of the like. While at the same time saying that Kasparov's immortal game was well analyzed by Kasparov who basically said "i have too much material on that side" which is not analyzing the game at all.
This is excellent work man. You have always been incredibly talented at documentary style videos but this is next level.

I don't know why drama in subcultures is so fascinating to me but it is and I want to say that you have done an excellent job of covering so much of this at such great depth. The statistical flaws section was especially well done.
Man, you and Technicals have ran a lot of stories recently of "guy with zero rizz gets into what should be a minor controversy, but because the memes are too funny, their whole life gets ruined" happened to Hax, The Panda CEO, Mike Z and now Hans. I think the moral here is that more people need a guy to do their PR.
Honestly that whole drama destroyed my impression of both magnus and hikaru. To irresponsibly spread such baseless rumors and intentionally let them run amok (I doubt magnus seriously believed the beads were real) and tangibly damage the reputation and career of a young up and comer guilty of mistakes that many of their peers are is disgusting.
I don't know man you ever see the way Magnus walks to the board always late? Him, alireza and Hans definitely walk like they have devices in there you know what. Hahahah. Maybe it takes one to know one. 🤔

Really good video. Edge of the seat recap.
So, the future of integrity in chess may be fucked because the #1 guy has such an ego that he can't just say he got outplayed? Seems about right.
If you were the #1 chess player in the world playing with white and you lost to someone rated a decent gap below you in skill level that you for a fact knew had a history of cheating how would you feel? It's possible the game was a fluke. Or and I hope this for Hans that he will turn out to also be a super gm in league with the top of the top. But would you not atleast question if foul play was at hand? Not to say I'm completely siding with Magnus's actions. But if he believes people with a history of cheating should not be allowed to compete it's atleast a pov i can understand. Where do you draw the line there is always going to be open for debate.
@@luckygozer "it is possible the game was a fluke" Literally every resource we have shows that it was not a fluke, and Hans did not play an amazingly good game of chess. Magnus made some mistakes, that is all. Nothing abnormal from Hans whatsoever in that game. Of course I can empathize with Magnus not wanting Hans at the event, and he has every right to be uncomfortable playing against a known cheater, it can adversely affect people when they don't trust their opponent is playing fairly. So I can understand his feelings during and in the moment immediately after the game, but after he had some time to analyze the game and still couldn't admit he just got outplayed, that's childish. He also has every right to protest the choice to invite Hans. The ridiculous thing is that he didn't withdraw before the event, and instead he waited to see if he'd win the match first before deciding if he would protest it. The problems with inviting a known cheater are still present whether Magnus wins the game or not. Magnus just wanted to have it both ways. I can't relate there. So to answer the question, it wouldn't have happened to me because if I felt the way Magnus did, I would have protested outright and I wouldn't have been in the tournament.
@@Tom_Het We are using a different meaning of the word fluke. If you put Hans and Magnus playing with white head to head over and over how many of those would Hans win? If you believe that to be rare then the game was a fluke. Hans played fine Magnus played poorly but that's a fluke. If you believe Hans would be able to more consistently take games of Magnus with white then it makes him one of the best of the best which is the other option I mentioned. Yes I'm with you as said I don't fully support Magnus actions either. As for not withdrawing before the event..eh. People's thoughts aren't necessarily black and white on these things. Have you never been in turmoil about something only to change your mind last minute or even afterwards regret the choice you made? It's not a great look no. You could also use that same logic to say it doesn't really matter if Hans cheated against Magnus or not. The problems with inviting a known cheater are still present. Also while the ''If I speak I'm in big trouble'' clip led us down the rabbit hole of oh Hans is a cheater and Magnus has made statements regarding Hans cheating much more and more recently than he admitted to. Has he directly stated he believed Hans cheated in the game against him?

Being a massive Magnus fan Magnus didn’t play his best that game… like at all, but what is weird is how he couldn’t analyze the match afterwards, the fact he did cheat a long time ago, and the rapid rise of improvement from his previous tournament score to the tournament he beat Magnus in
to say he cheated without evidence is dumb, this kid is smart AF and beats gm's regularly if you watch him live and just won a huge open tournament...
@@DaxperOfficial when I said “the fact that he did cheat” it was followed up with “a long time ago” there’s been multiple interviews where Hans himself said he did cheat twice when he was younger and wasn’t referring to the game with Magnus (nor am I). I’m referring to the moments where he said he did cheat lol
@@DaxperOfficial there are a lot of convicted crimes with circumstantial evidence instead of a literal knife with blood and fingerprints
There are so many errors in this. For example your point about a cheater making all the top moves. Only an idiot cheater would do that. It is much cleverer to only cheat as much as is necessary to win, not play the best move every move as that will be easy to detect. Many top players have said that a single alert in a critical position would be enough to turn the tables making it possible to cheat and avoid detection. Theoretically it is so hard to prove cheating mathematically for this reason. I think, “where there’s smoke there’s fire”. Are we to believe that Hans only cheated in two games ever? I find that highly unlikely. More likely is that he earned his reputation given how many top players (who actually understand how this works!!!) not just Magnus have come to suspect him.
Literally no top players said they think he cheated in the sinquefield cup man. Noone except people that stream or work with the website lol. And it's extremely naive for you to equate online gaming which is infested and full of cheaters including speedrunners that the website literally makes exceptions for, and think that has any bearing on a more prestigious and respected OTB event. They literally have nothing to do with each other in my opinion.
@@cooloutac yeah I know, I never said he cheated otb what I said was that he was already a notorious cheater and deserved everyone’s suspicion. And it’s actually a psychological advantage for your opponent to play a whole game afraid that you’re using an engine…
@@cooloutacI don’t think it’s naive to equate a player that HAS cheated a ton online with one that *might* cheat otb, that’s not that out there 😂
@@cooloutac except they have? tell me what Ali said about his Qg3 move.
@@andrewdinns1746 I still don't think he cheated OTB, except for that one tournament that had no anti cheat measures. But you are right, I was wrong for defending Hans. Its clear now that kid is a habitual cheater. 39th in the world blitz, 104th in todays chessable, #92 in the world but he just soared to #3 online and won yesterday titled tuesday. Thats a joke. It appears he cheats whenever there is no anti cheat measures. Online or off. He is making a mockery of chess and I apologize for ever defending him. Problem is the website is full of titled players just like him. I'm pretty depressed about the future of online chess now.
really good intro, it sold me on watching the whole video
Great video on the subject! Well done sir.
The case was dismissed by a federal judge before an agreement was reached. It's not a settlement if there is no case.
Hikaru is a hypocrite in nearly every drama he gets in.
Yeah, KZheadr/Streamer doing drama pay more than chess. Of course he would continue even by going hypocrite
@@Neoh53 especially in the long interview with hikaru I realized he‘s still bitter about being worse than magnus
I don't think it's just for the money. I thinks he's genuinely a little piece of biological waste
Definitely agree; he seems to have a lot of confirmation bias and only looks for evidence to support his opinion. This undermines the credibility of his findings.
Cheating by deciphering anal beads vibrations is more of a feat than beating Magnus.
Best video on the topic I've seen
Great work; well put together and structured! Nice, thank you from Germany! ;) Time to read Lushins Defense again. :p
New sub here...."This video speaks for itself" 😉
This video is such great work. Lots of research, providing evidence, great logical argumentation, assuming best intentions from BOTH sides, explaining what went one and why, showing past events and backstory, logical conclusion. No unnecessary drama addition. This was some great journalism. Well freaking done.
What a great video, thans for creating it
Im not much of a chess fan but am impressed at your ability to put together this video, i can see you reching the stars in the future if you hone your craft.
I love it when people go into an investigation assuming the person (In this case Hans) is guilty. It's innocent until proven guilty for a reason. You start with the fact that he's innocent. Do your research, and then hand down a verdict. Not give a verdict, fake an investigation, then put out faulty evidence and just say "Look look. He's guilty, look at these stats that take nothing into account".
You do realize " innocent until proven guilty " is not a world-wide accepted judicial concept right?
@@babayega1717 You do realize that this video shows why it should ?
@@babayega1717 And that's because many countries in this world are dictatorships that lack proper justice systems.
i kinda understand hans, i play poker online and review on GTOwizard afterward. some of moves i made at the time make me lot of money but reviewing it is actually bad move unless you are in the zone at that moment and knew it was the right move. even afterward when i revivew it, im like wtf, why did i do this, i dont remember doing this, this is insane.
Was wonderimg how this ended. Great video. And you are right, kudos to Hans for that excellent win againsr such a Great like Magnus
thanks for this trip into the chessworld :D
Only 7 minutes in but you’ve earned a sub. I love the way you structure your videos.
Great vid! Guess it was filmed to early to note that Carlsen was just fined for his actions in chess! Insta-subbed.
was unfamiliar with Hans as i stopped playing almost 2 decades ago in my teens, and had an above average talent level, at best..anyway, still fascinated by brilliance of these elite players, and you sir, made an INCREDIBLE video..new sub!
Thank you for your objective observations.
Commenting for the algorithm and because thefranChise is still in desperate need of assistance!
botez sisters are total snakes ngl
Lol botez sisters catching strays
Dang im coming back to your channel and im seeing CHESS videos? thats kinda cool im ngl
Brilliant presentation. tx
Brasil mentioned 🗣🔥(not in a good way tho) lets gooooo
Absolute banger.
Great video, you nailed it.
Great work and research in this video
Thanks a lot for this video!
This video is a replay of my exact thoughts in real time watching this all go down. At the time, I felt so isolated on this issue not because of my support for one side or the other, but because I actually had the ability to understand the evidence, think about it, and make a rational decision.
super well put together video. you make excellent points. you just earned a new subscriber!
great doco, subbed!
11:02 LTG reference never fails to brighten my day (though the lightning bolt might have something to do with it).
Lmao glad I’m not the only one that thought that.
The chess website has data that shows that Hans was cheating online until he was 17, but at the same time we have 8 year old players in the World Rapid and Blitz chess championship. This is a weird situation. How much can you demand from a child.
GREAT ANALYSIS - Kudos, you have clearly put a lot of work into this! I’m a bit late to the game on your vid, but greatly appreciate it nonetheless!
sad man
Excellent, well made video. Thanks!
Great video, honestly the fact that Hans is still playing is pretty inspirational to me. I always root for him now just for the sake of it, it's an underdog story
I think the problem here is that magnus is used to the way how other grandmasters are playing and it is hard for him to play someone who is outside the meta.
What an amazing video! Good job!
Awesome vid man- subbed
Commenting for more engagement. Going beyond smash is always something nice to see
This video was really entertaining. Also, i appreciate that you took a very unbaised approach. Good stuff!
An excellent documentary. Well done sir.
I mean if what they published is the most rock solid thing they got, keeping the list private may be the best thing This was a roller coaster, great job considering it all!
