Actual full backs and actual centre halves. Suddenly we're back to the 1950/60s
A 2-7-2 formation sounds like early to mid 20th century too lol
Yh, I hate it when people call "central full-backs" centre halves, or "wide half-backs" full backs
John Stones playing half back for city last season.
Tactics are cyclical
Literally just the WW Hungary used in the 50s lmao time is a flat circle
"If you have ball, play with it. Pass pass pass." -Pep Goatiola
All got that from his GOAT, Cruyff.
Thiago Motta: Full back: ❌ FullY back: ✅
This possession-based system immediately reminds me of Louis van Gaal’s Man United. You know, where the game usually ended up with a scoreline of 0-0, and 1-0 if they managed to won. Making the whole stadium sleep in the process. Theatre of Dreams indeed 😂
*Takes notes for next FM save*
Two inverted fullbacks with two liberos coming right up!
not really possible
@@ferreisd495dude above you quite literally described it. Two liberos and two inverted full backs. It actually makes alot of sense.
@@milagomez55nah its just not going to be the meta in the game
you can do it but you’ll get no wins
Here in Italy have been aware of Motta's tactics for a long time as he actually introduced it when he was in charge of PSG U19's. I still remember pundits here superficially understanding it and actually setting it up like you did at the beginning of the video, and then proceeding to laugh at him like he was some sort of a madman. That was six years ago, and look how far he has come.
Pundits were making idiotic comments about the supposed 2-7-2 formation. I'm happy Motta silenced them. You could see he was a good manager since his Spezia stint but what he's doing at Bologna is phenomenal
"If the opponent doesnt have the ball, they cant score" Harry maguire: "are you sure about that"
Are we back in 2021/22 when this was even slightly relevant?
@@MrBaronCabronhes gonna give them the ball
Fun fact Motta was one of Arteta's roomates at La Masia and Arteta signed one of Motta's ex players in Kiwior
It looks like that Barça are good at producing tacticians too. Pep, Arteta, Xavi and Motta. And the interesting thing is that all the new tactical mangers used to play in midfield and were very technical. Arteta, Xavi, Motta, Alonso, De Zerbi and Fabregas. Jorginho, Xhaka, Thiago, Fernandinho, Busquets, Henderson etc. can become mangers if this trend continues.
Yeah, defensive midfielders tend to succeed more as managers imo since they're already a kind of "manager on the pitch", orchestrating play both with and without the ball
Fergie was a forward I guess any position on the pitch creates different styles of play
How did you squeeze in Fabregas who hasn't yet had a minute as a first team coach and not Zidane and Ancelotti who were two of the best midfielders of their generation??
Lampard...
@@zaiffulgani145 a lot of ppl give lampard slate for his poor Chelsea performances, but he was decent with Derby and the first season of no hazard he got them ucl football soooo He's not a bad manager but he's not a big club level one
Makes sense given he was in the Barcelona youth team.
Sounds like Johan Cruijf
Well not fully but I get people have this thought that curyffian football is all about possession
Correct if I'm wrong, but the quote "if they don't have the ball, they can't attack" is actually from Johan Cruyff.
@@Morethanaclube yes but cryuff also said it's better to win 4-3 than winning 1-0
Literally my FIFA tactics.
share your tactics
It always excites me when good players work up the ladder and become good managers
Reminds me a great deal of City’s approach at the beginning of the season. The game against West Ham really stuck in my mind because of how the fullbacks formed a square in the center of the pitch with the CBs and I haven’t seen City dominate a match quite like that before. Was honestly surprised to see them toss it aside after the first few games because wow was it effective.
modern football managers nowadays are scary man. we have Arteta, Alonso and Motta all playing with their own philosophy and thrive. the future is exciting.
So he actually makes sidebacks the full-backs
Bro uses tiki taka to get same result as Mourinho's defensive tactics
Lol
Was listening to the Athletic podcast about him yesterday. It was fascinating.
0-11-0 narrow🔥
Gonna win the sextuple with this one 🔥🔥
Obviously easy to win if your 2-7-2 has an extra player compared to 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 😢
Including the goalkeeper
Todd Bohley is furious his 4-4-3 was struck down
@@zeybarurfr
Bro didn't watch the whole video
Fascinating. I’d love to see an episode on coaches and teams employing ‘out of the ordinary’ tactics. Bologna obviously is a shoe in but there’s a good few other candidates!
I hope he gets to implement this at a team like Barcelona or PSG.
It might be my heathen English brain but that sounds absolutely dreadful, shuffling the ball around the back all game
No, you should definitely watch some of their games. That style of play allows them to create some big chances, and they have some quality players (like zirkzee or Orsolini) that create other chances completely on their own
I agree, that sounded like LVG's United. Even Brighton are a bit boring to watch when the ball is with Dunk %90 of the time
Because it is. This channel is for those who think they are smarter than the average fan as they don't realize most tactics are just reshuffled.
@john-tr8jy And you happen to know how? Because you obviously have never watched a Bologna game 😂😂😂
Disasi prove him wrong by saying if the opposition don’t have the ball they can’t score 😂
Mourinho proved that theory wrong
What did he say
Without Mourinho, Roma perished today.
@@MatheusFernandes-xf4zmRoma perished with Mourinho, too. We beat them 2 - 0 last December.
Someone said the best defense is having the possession because if the opponent doesn't have the ball they can't score. But the other side said, the team with the possession have the bigger chances of losing the ball. This is how possession football vs effective counter football being described.
If you have the ball, your opponent can‘t score. Cristoph Kramer: Hold my beer
Him and Xabi are unexpectedly doing good and I hope Thiago joins Barca Maybe that’s what we needed
Thiago Motta, do we see that midfielders make the managers/coaches 😮
JJ Bull 😻
I remember seeing when he first proposed this when he started coaching youth teams and many laughed
I’d love to see a full on gegenpressing team like City or Liverpool play them. Be really interesting!
That's basically the barcelona philosophy but more extreme.
They called me a madman
Lewis Ferguson absolutely smashing it out there
We always knew about his 2 7 2 formation
Vittorio Pozzo did it first actually and he won 2 world cups with Italy in 1934 and 1938 with this tactic
I remember his 272 formation from. His older clubs where it flopped
For those who didn't know. Thiago motta is La masia product. The real Barca DNA
Leave it to JJ to explain us well in a fun way!❤️🔥
This speaks to that old thing of defensive possession, which in more recent times Barca played into, scoring lots of goals but having a high minutes per goal number.
"if you don't have the ball you can't score" JAPAN
This is the reason barca wants him
Another pep... What happened to the game I love
Thiago Motta as next Bayern Coach
pepification of football is boring, utd v liverpool was the most exciting game of 2024, proper end to end stuff, no hipster formations or stifling tactics
It won't be boring once everyone does it. It'll become unpredictable

@@silviod4nte it will be even more boring.
It's because this oscar meyer team signed me in FIFA

Lewis Ferguson has been amazing for Bologna
Loving all the snotty comments about how possession football is boring, robotic, '50s football 😂😂😂 Meanwhile we're having the time of our lives over here, because Thiago's brand of football is SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. ❤ Cheers from Bologna ❤💙
Zirkzee is heading to a big club again soon mark my words
Full backs that are actually fully back 😂
Well bologna will probably even get to the champions league considering juventus's form. Thiago motta's an excellent manager
Bologna are currently 4th, which is the last Champions League spot. So, it's more up to Roma and Atalanta to follow them than to them to be above Juve
With Lewis Ferguson rocking it 🏴
I look forward to when possession football falls out of favour, makes football so robotic
By definition that won’t happen. You have the ball, you can’t concede. Possession is ultimately only advantageous, there’s no strategy what would make it more advantageous to not have the ball
@@dustinmartin6524 that seemed to be the way of it when the Dutch national team and Ajax were so dominant. I'm sure many other teams attempted to take on the craft. And then again, with its brief resurgence with the Barca and Ajax UCL winning teams of the 90's. But there will be someone who comes in to negate the tactic, in such a perfect manner, that it becomes redundant. Dominant counter attacking sides, playing direct football. Yes, naturally a dominant side will have more possession, but it won't be the main tool in the box as it is now
Honestly like Pep's City have to be the most boring team to ever win the champions league.
@@vujhvjvgvfujk9888 saying this like they didn’t put on one of the greatest performances of all time against Madrid in the semis is crazy

Thiago motta hasnt come up against west ham yet. We only need 4% possession to score 3 goals
Thiago motta seems like another pep regen
What happened to de zerbi tactics
Disagree with the last part, look at the Spurs Newcastle match possession! 😂
i am pretty sure he is coming to barca if xavi leaves
It would work if you could score 😅 by kicking the ball into touch 😂
yeah yeah this is all probably true but im gonna choose to believe its because joshua zirkzee is the best player in the world
Seems like that might be a bit outdated now compared to what a lot of elite sides are doing. More 2008-2014 kind of football
So there's my question.....would this tactic work in FM???
Louis Van Gaal 👀
Interesting
Brendon Rodgers’s does the same thing it’s called death by football. Pass pass pass never letting them have the ball and win 1-0 nothing fancy
You clearly haven’t watched Bologna this season have you
@@BenFC_189 I’ve been watching bologna since Destro was their top scorer
Sounds like LVG, some of the most boring football I have ever had the displeasure to watch. Possession for possessions sake.
Get him to Juve
Possession is a dead stat in the modern age. We beat City at the Molineux with dead numbers and tbh they deserved to lose
Sounds like a future Brighton manager to me 😂
not if de rossi has anything to say about it
There's nothing particularly "elite" about reading formations sideways for no reason, and there's certainly nothing interesting about playing possession these days. It's one of the most unoriginal ways to play now. Their fullbacks aren't even really fullbacks so it's just making things sound different without actually being innovative. Posch is 6'2" and can't cross so... he's a centre back who wasn't good enough to be a centre back? If you give up attacking power by keeping the ball because "the opponent can't score if they don't have it", just look at Chelsea since about halfway through Tuchel's stint in charge 😂 he's just another boring, regressive "progressive" defensive keepball coach.
Formations are stupid
Is this new? No, no it is not.
