Do you want to learn how to create your own DIY hummingbird feeder? If so, keep watching and you will learn 5 EASY ways to create your own hummingbird feeder using recycled materials.
Change out the sugar water every time - don't just top it up. It should be 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water. Throw it away when you clean the feeder, because after a day or two exposed to the air, it's got yeast and mold in it. And you need to clean the feeder every time you change the sugar water, too - use some vinegar and water, scrub the insides, and rinse several times. Cleaning is why the bottles with narrow necks are not as good - they're hard to clean inside, even with brushes. Mold or bacteria that contaminates the sugar water can harm your hummingbirds. If you're not willing to completely replace the sugar water every time, and aren't willing to clean the feeder every couple of days in warm weather - don't have a feeder, you're putting the health of the hummingbirds in danger.
Awesome ideas!! I love the spice container one!!!👌
Thank you for the beautiful ideas God bless
Love these ideas, neat. wanted just a couple of small inexpensive feeders. These are fast to make
Change out the nectar regularly -- generally every three days or so. It depends on temperature: in hot weather, change it out daily. In cool weather less often is fine. If the nectar turns cloudy, it's overdue. If the nectar turns cloudy, it's gone bad from bacteria and/or molds. These can kill hummingbirds (either directly or by making their tongues swell too much to feed properly) though they will probably die out of sight. When refilling, it's a good idea to also clean the feeders thoroughly ( *especially* if you see any *black* spots -- a particularly dangerous mold and sure sign you've left them uncleaned much too long). White granular table sugar only -- no brown sugar or molasses (too much iron), or honey water (prone to especially deadly microorganisms). No icing sugar (it has other stuff besides sucrose). Remember that what's good for us humans is not necessarily what's good for hummingbirds. The other nutrients they need, they'll get on their own -- so stick to granular white sugar (sucrose: a.k.a. refined cane or beet sugar).
Excellent advice, Bernard. I'd like to include that red dye added to the nectar is unnecessary and potentially deadly for these little birds.
With the Texas heat, I think I will only put fresh out in the morning for a few hours. Then discard & clean container every night. They have been amazing to watch! They love my hibiscus, butterfly bush, & Pride of Barbados sometimes. Mostly the hibiscus of which I have several. I decided to make a feeder today after reading they have to double their body weight before their flight for winter.
Thank you so much for this video, this video is going to help me a whole lot 😁
Thank you! I had no idea it was this easy😁
Feeders 1-3 would waste a lot of nectar as most hummingbirds would not be able to access it that far down. Shallower versions of these feeders would be more efficient. Feeders 4-5 are excellent (but difficult to clean) ideas. Thanks for sharing!
Creative and inexpensive!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
WOW what good ideas 🎉 thank you ❤
Very nice. thanks
Thanks
Thank you...great eco feeders🐝🌻❤
Where do you get those little plug-ins with the hose and what’s on the end? What stops it from draining out or does it come up enough for gravity?
spice container?! That's so easy! I already have one of those! Just gonna go paint the lid red...
Where do you get hummingbird feeder tube?
Thank you :)
You have to have a rain gutter over the top or it will fill with water.
How do they reach all the way to the bottom of the deeper ones?
They don't, doubt they can even reach the bottom of the spice container. But I don't think it matters, you have to change out the nectar frequently anyway, so they probably don't even have time to finish it all off. Smaller is probably better for less waste.
Hello dear☺️ How r u
Why do you boil the water instead of just hot water out of the tap?
Boiling water kills any potential bacteria, pathogens etc and helps thoroughly dissolve the sugar
Yea but they can only reach as far as their noses can reach
Plus the length of their tongue!
Why sugar ? Why not use honey ?

Adding boiling water melts all the sugar
Some people are not very smart. At the end when you say sugar and boiling water, do you need to specify to let it sit out and cool and refrigerate before serving
