Inside Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111) Tour Video & Launch the Attack - USS Spruance (DDG-111) is a United States Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. She is the 61st ship in her class. Spruance is the second ship to be named for Admiral Raymond A. Spruance (1886-1969), who commanded American naval forces at the Battles of Midway and the Philippine Sea.
He was later Ambassador to the Philippines. Her keel was laid down on 14 May 2009. She was christened by the admiral's granddaughter, Ellen Spruance Holscher, on 5 June 2010 in Bath, Maine at Bath Iron Works, where the ship was built at a cost of $1 billion.[3][4] The completed ship left Bath on 1 September 2011 for her commissioning in Key West, Florida on 1 October 2011.
Spruance is outfitted with the latest technology. She was the first of the U.S. Navy's destroyers to be fitted with the Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS), manufactured by the Boeing Company. GEDMS provides an Internet Protocol (IP) based backbone for video and data services on the ship.[7] The bridge features touch screen controls and color readouts instead of gauges.
In March 2012 USS Spruance, during its eight week Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trial (CSSQT), set an Aegis record when it intercepted a long-range air target at the furthest distance in the history of the Aegis and Standard Missile program. In October USS Spruance participate in the annual San Francisco Fleet Week celebration.

  • I love background music in videos. It drowns out the annoying sounds like explanations, narration, the sounds of the ship, people talking in the video and all that rubbish. People complain about background music in youtube videos sometimes, but they're just being selfish, not considering all those people who can't put music on because they don't have the internet so they can't just open a tab next to the video and put whatever music they like on. Wait...what?

  • And still not one single Arleigh Burke named after Medal Of Honor Warrior Commander Ernest E. Evans, the single greatest and bravest US Navy DD Destroyer Hero in WW2, while fighting overwhelming odds at the Battle of Samar - the US Navy should be ashamed that they haven't recognized the tremendous heroics of Commander Evans ..

  • I originally had orders as an STG as a plank owner on the Arleigh Burke. 5/1 sea shore rotation would have sucked but, wanted plank owner certificate. Reup date was second day of new fiscal year and Gramm-Rudman act kicked in and I would have reupped for 6 without my $30k bonus. Guys got it two days prior and I would be SOL. I said screw it and got out. Pissed off my detailer! Loved the military and as an idiot joined the Army and made a career there. During the Army - Navy game, I always pick Navy...lots of fun fights over that during my 17 years in the Army. Rock on my fellow Tin Can sailors! 🤘

Adm Spruance successfully lead the absolutely massive mid-Pacific fleet to successful complex assaults on the Marshal, Caroline, and Marianas islands and THEN the very hard fought Iwo Jima and Okinawa battles prior to taking the fleet to the coast of Japan. Read his biography, and if you are in the Navy and haven't yet, then i really wonder why haven't you done so, certainly if you are an officer there is zero excuse.

  • It appears they now give ESWS pins away like National Defense medals. Seems that a great majority of sailors have them. It was unheard of for a SN to have one...unless they got it as a 3rd class and then got busted down at NJP. Same goes for the AW. The only pin that's still hard to earn is undoubtedly the "dolphins" aboard submarines. I have both my ESWS and "Dolphins" as I went to subs as a 2nd class just before they stopped taking surface transfers back in the early 90's. Also have my patrol pin and a few stars as well. Kinda strange hearing USS Spruance and not seeing a Spruance class DD.

A test was developed to detect it and now although no one in sight is the least bit affected, someone somewhere was, it was dramatized on TV, and mass hysteria and irrational fear took hold. An embarrassing sociological phenomenon for the record books. The data itself informs this viewpoint.

  • Ok nice but during actual combat at sea with smart missiles flying in droves, the inevitable hits, the casualties, the fires, the complex emergency response while avoiding collisions, continuing to run the combat center weapons and sensors, etc the scope speed and complexity of all required tasks becomes overwhelming. That why hopefully there are USN simulation systems for the officers and senior enlisted that can simulate the pace and complexity of required decision making under such intense pressure-cooker scenarios and then speed it up progressively to determine each officer's breaking point to develop individual strategies or additional training to improve the performance reserve. Likewise it can determine which officers may do well in low stress scenarios but are just totally incapable of the high complexity very high paced scenarios - ie they become confused and incoherent when approaching overload, lose confidence and determination, are intrinsically irremediably too slow or make too many or critical decision errors.

  • I dont like it when the helms man is so far behind rather than at the front next to the windscreen. This concept is very rampant in US ships

    @wanjevi@wanjevi4 жыл бұрын
    • It's not new. The helmsman doesn't navigate the ship but takes his instructions from the Conning Officer or Officer of the Deck and minds his course using the gyrocompasses. The helmsman also has right at hand the throttles for direct control of the main engines and variable pitch propellers. Once you've got the 'knack' or 'feel' of the ship this station can be a lot of fun, but you MUST always be paying attention, otherwise that 9,000 ton thoroughbred will have you reacting to her instead of her reacting to your helm input, especially when you're running at Flank speed.
