This is one of those trips that was way too short and I knew from the beginning that it would be so (alas - not enough time in between a million different plans). It's also a slightly unusual episode, with a crew helping me film it. Next episode: the Mesopotamian marshes in Iraq, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. See you next week 😁🙌

Is this you spreading your wings? Your travel blogging is top notch, of course and will keep you relevant and fun to watch for many years yet, but this one has, don't know, more of a journalistic, investigative feel to it, like the one about the garbage collectors in Cairo. I loved that part about Noor and the one about the coffeepot merchant. I wouldn't mind at all if you explore that sort of subject more often. I have the feeling that you are a good interviewer.
This to me is exactly what a travel video should be. When you demonstrate the humanity and culture honestly, it can only bring the world closer together...and we all need that. Thank you.

My heart melts seeing how this craftsman talks of his father. This is an emotion my heart resonates with. He did a gesture selling something made by his father. I keep quite few of my father's sculptures and wouldn't sell them for anything.

I was in Iraq with my boyfriend in 1974. It took us forever to get a visa but we kept trying in every country as we travelled North Africa and the Middle East until finally an embassy accept us and we had visas. When we entered Iraq we saw 1 western business man that 1st day and then never saw another tourist fir the rest of the month we were there. It was a different time than now and definitely more prosperous for Iraqis. What a beautiful people they are. I recognize some of the art and buildings in your video, so thankful to be reminded of that journey

“Cradle of civilization” and those two great rivers- that is how exactly the textbooks told us about Mesopotamia’s contributions to international culture and history. So it was really heart- breaking that Iraq was, in relatively recent history, more read about due to wars and conflicts. I hope the people of Iraq will be able to rebuild their nation back to its glory. Inshallah.
Well, Mesopotamia is Mesopotamia, "Iraq" are some lines in the sand drawn my other people that have little connection to either historical Mesopotamia or the people who live there today. Which is what makes keeping the thing together so difficult. The people of Iraq are highly diverse, and some have done pretty horrible things to others. Some see no future in the whole "Iraq" thing, some would like to preserve it, but not always for compatible reasons.
@@ohauss and some say the Middle East, as a whole, was wrongly divided by mostly western nations, which result to much of the conflicts. But that topic is already way too far from the scope of Eva’s video.

I remember when I was in intermediate school in history class the teacher used to say "Baghdad is a city of rising and falling through time" now, after watching your video I have grasped that meaning very well! That interview with the female carpenter was amazing and shows that no matter the place in the world women are begining to change the game for themselves and that is really important. We need more brave, smart and determined women like her to stand up in this harsh world.

In many Western countries, in most families, both parents have to work to make ends meet, whether they want that or not. Why not focus your attention and willingness to help on families who want a parent to be able to stay at home or at least strongly focus on family life, instead of being critical of women who want to put their careers first? Times change. Nowadays, most people would frown upon a woman who says she just wants to have kids and not have a career in the Western world. Which is sad. I think both lifestyles, full-time mom and career woman, are very important roles in society. Everybody should be able to choose. I think the female carpenter is so brave and hope all her dreams come true!

America and European countries owe Iraq a lot. They cooperated with each other to occupy my country under the pretext that we have nuclear weapons! We did not see any apology and assistance from them. All they care about is oil in my country and its wealth. You do not have an iota of human rights

I spent 3 years in the Baghdad area. I loved my time there, made many Iraqi friends, and fell in love with the place.
What I like most about Eva's vlogs is how she goes beneath the surface of the places and people she meets, in a way that is respectful and appreciative. I teared up when the coppersmith offered her a coffee pot his father had made. A gift or artisanship, history and deep personal connections.
I think thats kind of typical for Germans to analyze everthing

Advice to tourists in Iraq When you want to go on a tour of any country, you have to get information about it: its people, its customs, important places as well as suitable hotels. If you visit Iraq, you must bear in mind that Iraq is the source of many civilizations. In the north you can see the mountains and wonderful resorts. You can see the ruins of the city of Hatra in Nineveh. In the middle you can enjoy a lot in Baghdad when you see the modern buildings and museums and the view of the Tigris river that flows through Baghdad. Remember that there are sacred places shining in Baghdad, Najaf, Karbala and Samarra - if you visit the south you will see the beautiful ruins of Ur and the wonderful places in Basra especially the palm forests on the banks of the Shatt al-Arab. So, don't forget to take your camera with you.

I am Iraqi who lives in Tx, US. My daughter is 3 and she has never been to Iraq, we got her “Samoon” from a bakery here in Houston and she instantly fell in love with it. As an American I would LOVE to visit Iraq. It's so exotic looking to me. The history, the architecture all beautiful.
I met an Iraqi Kurdish Uber driver in Dallas. Very memorable experience, he prayed for me when I was having trouble. Seems Texas is a popular place for Iraqi people to immigrate to, I can see the similarities in terms of geography.

They are not allowed to go out without being escorted by men or older stern females. In one scene in this film the area is stuffed full of men, not a single women there, is it too hot fur women? Only men can tolerate the heat? No it’s because women are subjugated in your religion and culture, so ingrained you are unable to see the evil you perpetrate on all of your women, it’s really disgusting. Make me sick. I’m a free women, I want all women to be free but they are not free in your country no matter what you think.
So much has changed since I was there 12 years ago. The Iraqi people are amazing and resilient. Those that I worked with were hard working and very focused on their family life. Thanks for sharing!!

I visited Baghdad (home) last month after 15 years of being away (I Live in California) and all I want to do now is move back home. It’s such an incredible country full of kind people and rich in history.

I used to travel back and forth with my parents by car from Kuwait to Baghdad to see family back in the 70’s when I was a kid. I have very fond memories of suburbs of Baghdad where my aunties and uncles used to live. It was a great place to be huge family gatherings and parties. The war killed all of that and scattered our family all over the world. It’s so good to see it coming back to life again and seeing young ppl trying to change things around. What your doing will bring a fresh look at Iraq and the Iraqi ppl, who are just normal like everyone else I. The world. Thank you Eva

thank you for this. My parents left Iraq and I was born in America. I only know of Iraq through stories from my families. I was told it was not safe to visit. My family wishes I had the opportunity to see the country before all that it went through. Thanks so much for this video. It helps me to see the roots of which my people came from.

I live in the United States and I've never encountered a dangerous situation, but there are numerous shootings that make this country unsafe. It's not like at every corner you're being shot, but there are many shootings everyday. I think Iraq is more dangerous than Western countries, but it doesn't mean its safer areas are more dangerous than the US. Iraq still a beautiful country, just undeniably more dangerous.

We have a very large Iraqi community in Sterling Heights, Michigan (USA) & there are many bakeries that sell that exact diamond-shaped bread! I've not seen it with eggplant before, but they are exceptionally tasty, soft & fresh!
AKA chaldeans lol. i used to live in sterling heights but now in arizona. me too i never seen it falafal with eggplant, even though im iraqi.
We have a large Iraqi population in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. We have awesome falafels here but I have never seen anyone do it with eggplant but I'd like to try it. Also we have many different ethnic and religious groups from Iraq living here.

Noor's interview made me cry, that was so inspirational and thought provoking, and it hit even more since I'm an Iraqi girl too. She is so intelligent and strong, the perfect role model for girls. I wish her great success in life and hope she will achieve all her goals and dreams, which I'm sure she will do since she's so great at what she does! And Eva, this whole video was so beautifully made, especially the part about the copper market made me emotional. I hope the next time I visit my country I can visit that place and buy lots of souvenirs. I can really relate to what you were saying when sitting in the boat in the middle of the Tigris. I have also experienced that sense of being a time traveller when visiting certain special places. It’s hard to describe in words but I think you’ve come close…it’s as though you’re at the very threshold of a portal to the past. It’s a magical and almost moving experience.

On the contrary, when you delve into the matter, you will see that the Iraqis are the best who fight terrorists, such as the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda, as they call the Iraqi people, a beautiful and life-loving people. Sects live in peace, but foreign interventions from several countries and corrupt Iraqi politicians are the ones who sell the country and cause everything that happened in Iraq, but the Iraqi youth in recent years after the expulsion of al-Qaeda understood everything and united as one people of all nationalities to fight corruption, the last of which is the recent demonstrations of Iraqis against the corruption of politicians Sign and kill many young protesters in cold blood, and with all this, keep going and increase, I swear to you that in year by year, Iraq will return to its previous era thanks to the young people who love life in it. The future is bright.
In my time in Iraq, I found the people incredibly kind and hopeful even in the midst of yet another war. I hope some day to make it back under better conditions and with a nation that has healed some from damage done to it. Thanks for the video Eva, I really appreciate your hard work!

Just came across your channel. And as I scrolled down I found this video. I’m an Assyrian (Ancient Aramaic) who’s family originated in Iraq. None of my family members have traveled back to Iraq especially to the cities like Baghdad or kirkuk. You’re an amazing content creator and I respect you for entering a country that is talked about so negatively. I wish this was video was hours long. So much history that they don’t teach us in American schools. You’ve honestly planted the seed in my mind to hopefully travel there sometime in the future.

You described Baghdad better than us actually, we’re used to tell people about our struggling with wars and terrorism and forgot to tell about our rich history and culture, maybe the media also affected on Iraqi people and made them concentrate on the bad and sad side. It seems to me like in the recent 10 years, Iraq has become much more peaceful, right? Iraq as well as Syria have become much more peaceful countries that people can generally travel to nowadays, unlike about 10 years ago when ISIS and the Syrian civil war were raging strong. I definitely would be interested in visiting Iraq now, for sure!

Thank you, thank you for this video! As a historian/history teacher, my heart broke in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq and the damage, plundering and looting of the Iraqi National Museum. Bagdad was on my bucket list, politics aside, since I learned of Mesopotamia as a school kid. Your video showcased the wonderful humanity, culture and history of that region. I loved the thrill you had dipping your finger in the Tigris (a desire I've had for ages) and must ask if you imagined and felt the history that river contains? Loved this one Eva. The 'time traveller' phrase hit the nail on the head. I was fortunate to travel there in '77 and to stand in the ruins of Babylon, walk the Ziggurat Of Ur in complete solitude and the minaret of Samarra. The feeling was just as you said.
