Had experience with 3 of these old WW2 "Powerwagons" all highly modified. All had vintage flathead in line 6 cyl engines. The 2 on 4 wheels were built by Dodge and GMC. The Dodge was my great uncle's fence building rig on his E Oregon Mountain Ranch. It was modified as a flatbed with an extra transfer case and 3 PTO driven winches. One on the front bumper, one under the rear of the bed and the third behind the cab with a 2 arm wrecker boom. He would let it down a steep hill on the rear winch loaded with fenceposts and wire, Use the wrecker booms for sidehill support and winch it up outa the bottom with the front winch while his crew cussed him for even thinking of building fence on ground too steep to stand on. It sat on the old stock military tires. The GMC was owned by my HS AG teacher. He kept the engine, tranny, axles stock but removed the fenders front and rear and mounted 38" rear tractor wheels on all 4. Call it lift kit! He needed to cross a river to access his ranch property so put the intake and exaust above the cab and waterproofed the ignition and gearboxes. He had the tires weighted with sodium solution to prevent flotation. I rode in it dashboard deep in the river with him........ONCE! Never again! The third was actually originally a "Scout" halftrack. PU size rig with tires in front, rubber tracks in back, "Personnel carrier" I think. Mods replaced the stock front wheels with wide cleated AG tires similar to those found on combine harvesters of 50's vintage. The rubber rear tracks were replaced with HI cleat steel tracks from a D4 Cat. This one didn't need any winches! Not sure original manufacturer. Talk 4WD all U want but these mark a standard yet to be beat!

Just so you all know, none of the trucks are Power Wagons. The first truck and the last truck are M37s. The first truck to make it to the top is a 1942 WC 1/2.

You are right that none of them are actually Power Wagons--however, the first truck to make it is a 1941--the '42s had the flat hood
@ronaldfazekas64925 жыл бұрын
They actually did make the early 1/2 trucks in 1942. The later ones had the marker lights mounted on the fender beside the headlights, the 41 had the marker lights on the side of the headlight buckets, that's the easy way to tell which year the early round nose trucks were if it doesn't have the data plates provided the fenders haven't been changed etc. I had a 41 1/2 ton closed cab with a winch when I was 18. It had a 56 Plymouth 230 in it which had about 130hp and would pull better than the 218 the early trucks originally had, though most probably have been swapped for a newer flathead already. The 3/4 ton version had a 230 stock and the later M37s had mostly 230s in them as well and a 2 speed high low transfer case. The early trucks had 4.88 gears too and the later ones had 5.83 gears so my truck had a bit more top end. My first car was a 42 GPW Jeep and I had both for a short time but sold the Jeep to help pay for the Dodge. I miss both of them now and was going to try and graft in the 2 speed transfer case out of a later M37 but it seemed like more work than I could handle so never did it.

Well that’s sort of like saying you can’t bring a Pontiac Tempest to a GTO club... there would be no Power Wagons without the WC’s and the M37’s are close enough. We invite all 4x4 vintage Dodges to the rallies.

Scott White almost as good as those old army 3/4 tons. They are only good for 45mph but can pull a house down. They have no heat, split dif and like 78 HP. Fantastic trucks. But no more road worthy then the Gator. In fact, it most likely has more HP, better fuel efficiency and higher top speed. And truthfully, maybe safer and warmer.
