  • Ukrainians had from 2014 to prepare defense lines along the common border but only minimal effort was expended, given it's a large border especially if counting in Belarus, but i believe there was no proper thought given to build extensive defenses. This is a positional war with classic trenchlines and dug in troops, so they should have prepared accordingly. It's a positional war (and it always devolves into stalemate) and it has proven to be true for some time now. If Ukrainians attempt to play mobile warfare they lose. They must conserve their assets and be on the defense until which time they have built their combat power and when they feel ready go on a large counter offensive, it may or may not work, but this is how it must be done. Another problem is Russia has a lot more firepower such as artillery superiority so they pound these defense lines. Very tough situation for Ukrainians.
