With the forced sale or banning of TikTok racing through Congress, Bill asks U.S. Representatives Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) about an unlikely alliance of politicians opposed to the bill.
This is the first time anyone has pointed out that this is not "free speech". It is "manipulated speech" masquerading as free speech. And the users themselves don't realize this. It's almost the way addicts behave. It's my body, I can put whatever I want into it. With social media (Tik Tok specifically) it's my mind, I can consume whatever falsehoods or misinformation I like.

that's what free speech is about. Free speech means that you can say what you want. And usually speaking has the clear intention to influence people to the better or worse. Free speech is not about the things you want to hear. Free speech is about the things you don't want to hear. A good example for free speech is Bill himself. back when the Irak war started he got into trouble because he was "part of the fifth column" by saying what the world said that didn't want the big pay check from the US for sacrificing their citizens in a useless war. It's funny how Bill sometimes makes 180s from week to week. But the manipulated speech is a real issue. If the state wants to do anything about it, it's education. A state has the possibility to inform people about how the world is working. For that they can use TikTok themselves. Or at least the TV. But they haven't even tried that. So it is a constitutional question as the Government declares something as a unsolvable essential problem without even trying to solve the problem.
Do you have a learning disability? People can post and interact with whatever they want on Tik Tok. Just like KZhead, Insta, and Twitter. It’s important for free speech
Everyone completely missed the point. You don't have to ban it, the push is to sell it to an American owner and divest from China.
The Constitution gives the government no right to choose who owns a private company. Unless it's for defense. We had Facebook and Twitter trolls from Russia and China meddling in our elections for almost a decade now; not a peep from Congress. This is about TikTok being a threat to Meta and Alphabet, who funds ALL of these politicians w/ campaign contributions.
This is what I don't understand either. Is TikTok realistically going to take their ball and go home when they can get 10s of billions of dollars selling out to a US entity? They sell and everyone wins outside of the Chinese government.

The point missed is that you're being influenced by the CIA through American social media companies everyday all day. The CIA does not control TikTok and that's the problem. This is not a wild conspiracy, the Twitter files exposed this and most people who know the evil the CIA and FBI has done to it's own citizens knew this all along. The "national security" threat is that the government can not shut down certain conversations on TikTok... that's it. That will always be it. You need to be lied to... they just want to be the ones doing it.

I honestly don't know what threat that TikTok specifically poses that couldn't just as easily be blamed on any and all social media, including the platform you're currently watching. I enjoy Tiktok but thats because I got onto it during the pandemic when I had a lot of free time and after a while the algorithm was able to create a really customized feed thats shows me what I like - mostly memes, random facts, army stuff, cute dogs, clips of shows I might be interested in, and a bit of news. But if I had only gone on the app for like 5 minutes once a week then I'd probably hate it too because originally my feed mainly consisted of narcissists, snowflakes, furries/femboys, and girls dancing while wearing 5 pounds of makeup.
If you knew the depth of the threat there would be zero argument.

Wish we could go back to a time when we didn't have any social media....when we connected based on ourselves, not an image of ourselves.
People have always had an image of themselves that they've perpetuated--it's just easier to do it on social media. There are a fair amount of positives to social media, but it's like pharmaceutical drugs--while there are benefits, there are definitely potentially severe side effects if abused. Humans are just terrible at controlling themselves.
Never used it, never will. I’ll stick to American apps.

I was coming here to say just that. I don't know why he acts like all Palestinians want to murder everyone and that the "kids" in this country all support Hamas. That's just not true.
Except the problem is they view it as one and the same, I work in Cambridge near MIT and I see so many kids who think that Hamas are freedom fighters and comparing the Israeli's to Nazis. These are also some of the most intelligent children of this generation, which is frightening.

Good grief… the issue with TikTok is not being Chinese-owned or making our kids stupid (we can do that ourselves), but largely the fact that that there’s a growing number of young people opposing and condemning Israel’s brutal actions (and no, Bill, that’s not equivalent to ‘siding with Hamas’) because they formed their opinion from seeing video clips of the appalling destruction and killing, as well as the gloating of IDF soldiers as they go about on a rampage and film it for entertainment posting it on this awful media platform - whereas most of the older generations get their opinion-forming info from sanitized mainstream media which enables them to pretend it’s not that bad/it’s justifiable. And it’s that growing dissent among young people over this issue what’s brought on the ban vote.

If they want to sell then there’s no issue. The government has no authority to dictate that a website should be taken down because it’s simply Chinese. That is not the job of government.
They don't want to sell but in the end, given its value of $100 billion, they probably will sell rather than close up.

Editorial control is not censorship. That is why a free press is also mentioned in the first amendment. Just as the second amendment was regarding muskets, the first amendment was regarding a milk, crate, that you could stand on to yell.
TikTok is absolute cringe, so I would not be sad if they get rid of it. But there are far more issues like the border, inflation, military spending, and new legislation that needs to be discussed before this.

My concern about TikTok is less about freedom of speech, and more about the ability to use millions of phones and their data as a first strike weapon.

Worked for China, that's why there's no TikTok there. Plus the avg American wont waste time with a vpn, theyll bump to another app. Conversely, if this forces Americans to switch to vpn then it woul safeguard their privacy better than without it.
