  • You guys were super respectful for not knowing who she is. Other people I’ve watched have called her “this bitch” and said “she’s too weird” and all this derogatory stuff when she’s just creative. Sure you guys were confused about the costume, hell I was too even though I’ve been listening to her for 8 years, but yeah you guys should listen to Mad Hatter like others have said, I think you’d get a kick out of that one haha

  • Martinez is a performance artist, best known for completely integrating herself into her work by becoming an aesthetic representation of her albums. Her previous concept albums - “Cry Baby” and “K-12,” released in 2015 and 2019, respectively - came with their own visual aesthetic that Martinez carried throughout all tour and promotional work. Her past work built off the motif of childhood, with Martinez assuming the nickname “Cry Baby” among fans, releasing a feature film for “K-12” and referencing popular nursery rhymes or children's activities in her song titles - see “Play Date,” “Pity Party” and “Dollhouse.” After taking an extended hiatus post-pandemic, many fans feared that Martinez would not return to music. That considered, it was equally delightful and bizarre when Martinez completely wiped all of her social media posts and posted a video of a gigantic egg beginning to crack in a fantastical swampy pink forest. Later, Martinez revealed the egg cracking to be her own rebirth, but what emerged from the egg was a new being - a glamorous, pink, four-eyed, alien creature. While this new look was initially thought to be simply the cover of “PORTALS,” it was subsequently made clear that this is Martinez’s new appearance. She has donned the pink creature prosthetic makeup and swamp-goth orgecore fairy outfits for every public outing since, even performing in full costume at Lollapalooza on March 18th. The dramatic rollout and Martinez’s commitment to personifying “PORTALS” embodies the true message of the album - growth is painful and messy and coming out on the other side often feels like a whole new world. “PORTALS” takes the listener through Martinez’s journey of struggle, growth and self-discovery, from the death of her old self to the birth of her current self. The album's name suggests a significant change from one life to the next. “PORTALS” begins with “DEATH,” a song dedicated to the dissolution of a past self. The lyrics proclaim “I’m back from the dead, back from the dead.” The choice of this song to introduce the album boldly defines its new era as a period of change. Lyrically, the song reflects on Martinez’s struggle with constant criticism and the weight of celebrity on her shoulders. Sonically, “DEATH” has a much darker sound, further differentiating “PORTALS” from her previous work.

  • the void is pretty crazy as well, also fun fact she always includes at least one song with heavy topic in her albums: Crybaby - Mr Potatohead, K-12- teacher's pet/orange juice, Portals: moon cycle, her songs in general tend to have deeper meanings which I found really cool and she's so creative with the metaphors as well as visuals

  • Her name is pronounced Mel-uh-nee. There is a story throughout her albums, starting with Crybaby, then K-12, and now finally Portals. Every song from each album gets a music video that adds to the story. It's recommended that you go back to Crybaby and work your way through to get new stuff. After School Ep is it's own thing with no ties to the story, aside from Test Me which ties into K-12 a little.

  • "Tunnel Vision" by Melanie Martinez is a song that delves into themes of self-empowerment, manipulation, and the dangers of being consumed by superficial desires. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a protagonist who is aware of their own allure and the power they hold over others. The song opens with the invitation to follow the tunnel into the portal, symbolizing a journey into the depths of one's desires and the consequences that may come with it. In the first verse, Melanie Martinez showcases her ability to captivate and manipulate those around her. She acknowledges that people are drawn to her, but she sets clear boundaries, asserting that she is not just anyone to be taken advantage of. The haze and hypnotic state described in the lyrics represent the allure and fascination she holds over others. However, she urges them to stop searching for something that they cannot possess. The pre-chorus highlights the protagonist's awareness of the superficiality of others' desires. She compares herself to a cherry and a pie, suggesting that people often believe the surface-level attraction will be more satisfying than the deeper connection. However, she sees through their intentions and recognizes that their rush to possess her is ultimately their downfall. The chorus emphasizes the protagonist's frustration with being objectified and underestimated. She rejects the notion of being reduced to mere honeysuckle and fresh meat, asserting that she is more than just a physical object of desire. The line "playing house to distract me" suggests that others may try to manipulate her by pretending to be something they are not, but she sees through their facade. She knows what they are truly after and refuses to be deceived. In the second verse, the protagonist exposes the futile attempts of others to win her over. She sees through their manipulative tactics and revels in their failures. The line "I make them tumble down the hill they climbed" signifies her ability to bring them down from their pedestal and expose their true intentions. She refuses to be swayed by their empty promises and sees their attempts to win her over as nothing more than a failed trick. The song concludes with the outro, where the protagonist asserts her worth and independence. She would rather die than be reduced to a mere object of someone's obsession. The line "show me how far obsession goes, could've been more, now we'll never know" suggests that she is uninterested in being someone's fleeting infatuation and desires a deeper connection that goes beyond superficial desires. Overall, "Tunnel Vision" by Melanie Martinez is a powerful anthem of self-empowerment and a warning against being consumed by shallow desires. It encourages listeners to recognize their own worth and not settle for being objectified or manipulated by others.

  • This album is very conceptual and basically takes place in the space between life and death and rebirth. This creature is sort of.. her soul in the afterlife. It's complicated 😂 Just expect anything she does to be surrealist

  • So idk if someone has already explaind but Melanie Martinez has a character called Crybaby and she has three albums, Crybaby, k-12 and Portals. In the Crybaby album The Crybaby charecter is supposed to be baby/todler, K-12 stands for kindergarden - 12th grade and Melanie has even made a film about the Crybaby charecter starting kindergarden/School. Then the Crybaby charecter dies and is reborn to the pink Portals creature. Btw most of her songs is in the order she released it:)

  • It could just be a theory, but I think the game buttons are referring to Mel’s experience as a celebrity. “Say they’re demonic” I think is referring to Mel’s general aesthetic for her videos. “Give them long hair” is referring to people hating on her pixie cut and wanted her to keep it long. “Make them tall and skinny” refers to people body shaming her when Portals was released. “Chase them for a photo” refers to people taking pictures of her without even asking first. “Call them a B for being human” refers to Mel setting her boundaries and her “fans” call her rude just for having thoughts and feelings of her own. I also loved the representation of how Mel is being controlled by society, just like how a character is in a video game. And I also think the girl at the end is a toxic, obsessive fan, and when the screen said “Game Over” is represents Mel being her own person and making her own choices, and the toxic fan is very upset about it
