The Double Doink actually deserves a deep rewind. We're sorry.

2024 ж. 18 Мам.

You know, Chicago sure has a lot going for it. One fantastic city! Great people, great food, what an amazing place. All that wind! Sure can't beat it.
Anyway, the Double Doink became a sensation for all the wrong reasons. It's tragic. It's heartbreaking. It's cruel to a fanbase that had so much reason to be excited. Everything that has followed since the moment the ball was snapped has completely overshadowed the optimism that existed in the moment. That team was special, and that's why what came next hurt as bad as it did. Enjoy!

  • @13:33 Big props to Massie, big number 70, for being there for his kicker when that happened. Despite the frustration and disappointment I’m sure he felt, his first instinct was still to console his bud. Makes this a little less awful.

    • I am the hiring manager for our Mascot talent over at the Seattle Kraken and I have to say I would fire this mascot. Mascots have to be the ultimate beacon of positivity in a stadium during a moment like this. Anyone in my position would have the clear expectations that if the kick didn't go in the mascot should run to the kicker, give him a hug and tell him "you'll get it next time". Then after that I would expect the mascot to run to the head coach and yell "LET'S GO!" and follow it up by running up and down the stairs of the stadium at a full sprint for the remainder of the game.

  • I was staying with friends in Spain when this happened. I was trying to explain to them how frustrating this was. They were like, "If this guy is so bad at kicking, why not get someone else to do it?" And I'm like, "No, they can't, he's the only one. He has exactly one job, and it's to kick the ball far and accurately. It's the only thing he does and he's the only one who can do it!" "But what about that other guy? He kicks it too." Only thing in common between American Football and "futbol"/"football"/soccer is the total number of players on the field at the beginning of a game/match (11 per side).

Something that got left out (albeit not very important but memorable for me) is that he kicked the 43 yarder two times, the first he made but got iced. The stadium was too loud for me to hear the bang, I just saw the ball not pass the uprights. We watched it the broadcast call over and over on the train home trying to understand what we had just seen. Looking back on it now, I am so happy we went to that game. The game itself was a classic defensively playoff hard fought game, Foles worked his magic at the very end on a clutch TD but the Bears fans (who made the game have a great atmosphere) could not imagine what would happen next (Vikings fans could relate though lol). Their offense couldn't score more than a TD in a playoff game versus a wounded secondary and their defense couldn't close out a win when they needed it, but the Bears' brass fooled themselves into thinking they were a kicker away from being champions and spent the offseason holding a kicker circus rather than getting better in other areas.

  • Can’t believe this was 3 years ago, I remember this day like it was yesterday and even as a bears fan the pain of this field goal never went away even today I still think what could have happened if parkey made the kick, for me it could have changed how the nfl is today if parkey made the kick maybe the bears could have won the SB, we still could had have players that were in that roster today, Nagy would have still had his job and be considered a good coach and trubisky would have not been called a bust, the pain never went away it’s very depressing to think what could have happened and what we had that years, I remember watching this game it was chilly and cold in Chicago and you can still see a bit of snow and ice in the streets and I see many people wearing bears gear and jackets and hats outside and I remember that when we stopped that eagles on 4th down I was hyped and scared at the same time knowing that their season comes to the line on that play then they scored, they decided to go for 2 but thankfully are defense was a brick wall on 2 pointers just like it was all season and then I remember freaking out when trubisky made that pass to Arob knowing that we were really close to field goal range but also knowing we need to spike it so we did and then we knew we have a chance to win the game but then I remembered that our kicker was parkey and he had been doinking kicks all season and that this will be a roll of the dice and I remember celebrating when parkey made the kick and I celebrated so hard that I couldn’t hear the timeout and screaming “LETS GO TO NEW ORLEANS!!!” But then I said “why aren’t the bears celebrating” and then I realized that they had iced the kicker (icing was considered a smart strategy back then I think it still is) and I was scared again that my heart felt like it was gonna come out of my chest and turned the volume up on my tv and then when I saw the ball going to the left side of the upright and heard the doink I thought it was gonna bounce in but then it bounce to the center low part upright and I thought it still might have gone a bit in after it bounced off but then I saw the bears mascot on the left side and he fell down and I saw the refs signal no good and parkey lay down I new our great and promising season was coming to a end and I knew people and gonna flame parkey and the bears and bears fans like me on social media and I knew he was probably going to get cut so I turned of the TV and I didn’t talk to anyone that day after the game so I went to sleep cuz I was so upset I couldn’t find anything else to do and when I went to school the next day me and my friends (also bears fans) and bears fans in general where all so quite and by the look of our faces we were all upset and none of us wore are bears jerseys and sweaters and jackets and hats like we did all last week knowing we had a playoff game on Sunday and me and all bears fans weren’t even saying a word and my gym and athletics teacher and coach was doing his job but wasn’t really in a good mood as he was always so positive and energetic and you can tell by the look on his face and the way he talks he was upset like all bears fans, and he always kept a bears sticker on the board with the bears record and he erased the bears record and wrote “ great season is over” and after the class me and all bears fans asked him why was he so upset and he said “ you know what happened yesterday we shouldn’t talk about it” the rest of the week was depressing but I was a saints fan the rest of the playoffs since drew brees was one of my fav our QB’s until that no call But there is no way that this great season and everything of the 2018 bears was 3 years ago hopefully Justin fields does something spectacular with this team just like he did with Ohio state 🐻⬇️

Having to get through Brees, Brady, and the LA refs most likely would have been way too much for an average and inconsistent Trubisky, a poor coach like Nagy, and kicker who very obviously could not be counted on in pressure situations. After missing a 50 yard field goal in Denver during the preseason and with several doinks already under his belt, the Bears losing a game because of Parkey was inevitable.

We all thought the season was over, but simultaneously all wished for a miracle. It was so quiet you could hear a pun drop. Then the kick, then the time out. We all sigh at once and get ready for the real thing. This was it. The final nail in the coffin to the Eagles post suoer bowl season. The kick goes up and... Bounces twice and then out of the uprights. We all yelled so loud when that happened. Then they played the highlight reel of Parkeys missed kicks that season and we all laughed. That game was pretty boring in all honesty, but the end made all of it so worth it. Then the Eagles failed to show up in the second half against the saints the next week and got sent home. • As an Eagles fan, the double doink was the only time in my 30+ years as a fan I've ever felt that my team winning a championship was inevitable. Not even at any point during the 2004 season, with McNabb and Owens wreaking havoc on opposing defenses, did I feel this way. But this was different. We had just made an improbable run to the title the previous year, and the script was playing out exactly the same way, though with a tougher playoff schedule this time around. Wentz was hurt (again) and Foles stepped in to help secure the playoff spot (again). This was going to happen. The Bears made the mistake of giving the Eagles a shot and they paid the price. The rest of the league was next. Foles throwing that interception in New Orleans turned out to be beginning of the end, but the night of the double doink I thought, for the first time, that we would never lose again.

    • Man you missed out then. I believed in 2004 and 2017 twice. I lost faith after Wentz went down then jist was hoping to make it to the next game every time. Then the day of the Superbowl some just felt special. Even more special than 2004. Only the 2008 Phillies could match it in my lifetime.

    • Believed with all my heart in 2017 - knew that entire year something was different. I told my wife we were watching magic happen. I felt the same way in 2018 after winning the Bears game - plus Cre’von picking off Drew Brees to literally start that NFC title game. Definitely felt like we were going to repeat for sure.

    • Foles was special in big games. Normally when Eagles are driving to win the game I expect them to blow it, but with Foles I expected him to score a TD.

    • It’s funny, I felt that way about the Seahawks after the Jermaine Kearse miracle butt catch. It seemed so fitting that Tom Brady would lose a third super bowl on a ridiculous catch…

    • @@lambaseded4845 Those Seahawks teams are a great example! The wildest stuff would happen, like the last few minutes against the Packers in the NFCCG or the Wild Card the year after when the Vikings missed a 27 yard field goal in the waning seconds. I never saw a team win in so many crazy ways.

  • AS an eagles' fan I remeber that game vividly it was so intense and I was so nervous hugging a pillow while my friends were already teasing me that the eagles' had lost. When the double doink happen I just jumped from the sofa and couldn't believe it! It was another St Nick miracle! The week after wasnt that great with Jeffereys drop/int against the saints

  • I've been a Bears fan since the 2012 season and in France. I picked them because I've been a fan of the Bulls. It was a great season, beyond what I could expect. But to be up at 1am when he missed this field goal was very heartbreaking. It was the same feeling as a few years ago when we lost the last game of the season against the Packers at home and it was 1am in my country. I couldn't express my anger and both nights were short and I couldn't sleep.

  • That whole post season... man. Then just 2 weeks later we'd see one of the worst no calls on NFL history.

  • this is the one game in eagles history, aside from the super bowl win, that I wish I could watch and experience again. the elation mixed with feeling so upset for Parkey was surreal

    • Parkey's career deserved to end for this turkey, but sadly it somehow didn't.
