  • As far as ancient philosophies of “coolness” go, I also think Taoism/Daoism and Buddhism have some elements of coolness to them. In my knowledge of Taoism, the core concept is basically going with the flow of life. Wanting nothing beyond what the Universe gives you, and not living outside your means, financially, physically, and spiritually. Cool.

  • This reminded me of how philosophy is often thought of as uncool. Since coolness is associated with being able to succeed in a casual and effortless way, talking about philosophy with people that don’t appreciate it will often often result in you looking uncool, because you are putting conscious effort into thinking about abstract problems that other people believe they can casually avoid. For example, a philosophy student that discusses stoicism for hours is going to seem far less cool then someone who says “i just kinda stay chill about everything. I dont think about it too much”

    @alexanderswartz2608@alexanderswartz26082 жыл бұрын
    • It's only "uncool" if you do it in the wrong context. Not only is it uncool, it's also a bit pretentious to most people. As an exaggerated example, you say something like "It's a beautiful day today" and Mr. Philosopher starts forcing the conversation towards "but what is beauty?" That's obviously not what you meant and in no way is that conversation even practical. It's just a thought experiment. If you wanted to be hyper-objective about it, the answer would be "beauty doesn't exist because it's a word describing an idea, which is an artificial concept created and passed down by humans. Not only does 'beauty' not exist, words don't either because they are just ideas shared between humans. These ideas also vary slightly between humans since we can't read minds, so your concept of 'beauty' is not even the same as mine, despite overlap." See how impractical and "boring" that entire argument is, despite being pretty logically sound? That's what talking philosophy sounds like to normies.

  • On the association between coolness and hiding pain. I've found that this can go too far. If you're hiding the pain of life from your friends all the time, then you are treating them as your enemy. If you're hiding your pain from yourself, it makes you your own enemy. If you can't see your own pain, it becomes impossible to meaningfully share it with others.

    @goobus_floobus@goobus_floobus2 жыл бұрын
    • I think the moment when it goes to far is when its no longer hiding, but more like denial and lies. It starts as hiding though. When you have pain and dont aknowledge it despite its repeating occourance, over time, everyone can becomes hurt, and it is a problem when someone is hurt but does not know where it is comming from because that is what makes them bitter for apparently no reason at all.

We’d be better off not only staying cool externally but internally letting that sht go and instead dealing with everyone as amicably as possible. That doesn’t mean we can’t express emotional pain when something is deeply troubling us; it just means realizing how unimportant most of the things that bother us are.

  • It's funny how when you're a teenager you try to be cool by proving yourself, you copy certain behaviours or ways of dressing which you see as indicating cool. These things always look out of context and as a result look like the absolute opposite of cool! I suppose this is because the underlying idea of taking things as they come and remaining 'cool' in the face of them is missing, instead the need to prove yourself as cool is blatant anxiety. It's also interesting how quite often you see middle class white people doing these kind of fake cool behaviours, I suppose because unless you grow up in a world of high tension and powerlessness you won't really learn 'how to be cool' (that isn't to say middle classes can't grow up feeling powerless or around high tension, all families are different though there are definite safety nets). Anyway, I always hated cool, perhaps because I didn't feel that I was, but this video has given me a newfound respect and understanding of it.

    • From my experience the rich kids were always cool. They could throw parties and buy the latest stuff. Just look at social media today. Sure there are some memes that come out of the ghetto but the majority of celebrities are rich people. Like the kinda guys that can just buy a Lamborghini and give it to a fan. They absolutely dominate social media because their wealth provides far more opportunities, allowing them to do whatever they want. Stuff that comes out of the ghetto is usually laughed at in a demeaning way. Only rap music loosely holds on to that old idea of cool. But it's largely just become about clawing one's way out of poverty, getting that extravagant life. Instead of rapping about how many times you've been shot. Now it's about all the booty and cars you got

  • This video was so...cool. The smooth music the slightly raspy tone - you did it your middle school self would be so proud! I've been thinking recently about a bit Brene Brown did in this workshop series and she got everyone to stand up and dance to the music and laugh and smile and it was all so expressive and joyful. Then she told everyone to look as cool as possible and it was this big mic drop moment. Being cool means shutting down that silly expressive side of the self - the goofy kid that isn't cool but can be so goddamn happy or sad. It really tied her whole message around the importance of vulnerability together. It changed the way I look at coolness (which, naturally, I was rather fond of myself at the time). Watching this video has made that whole puzzle click together more - seeing coolness as being an important survival instinct in the neighbourhood. To synthesise: yes coolness is an inhibition of the expressive and vulnerable part of our being and also yes it is necessary in certain circumstances. It brings to mind Nietzsche's quote about Stoicism being "quite advisable for men with whom fate improvises, for those who live in violent times and are dependent on abrupt and changeable individuals. He, however, who anticipates that fate will permit him to spin "a long thread," does well to make his arrangements in Epicurean fashion"

  • I know the concept of "cool" was birthed in the jazz era, but surely being cool existed way before. Even in our hunter gatherer phase there had to have been kids looking up to the alpha males thinking "wow he's really cool I want to be like him". Or even the toxic masculine guy that everyone looks at like "wow he's trying so hard to be cool".

    @maillardsbearcat@maillardsbearcat2 жыл бұрын
    • Coolness is a particular flavour of charisma or charm. "Cool" and "charismatic" are used interchangedly nowadays, but there are other kinds of charisma that wouldn't necessarily be described as "cool". If you've grown up in a culture where "cool" traits are the best traits to have, it can be hard to imagine wanting to be anything else. Even concepts like "alpha male" and "toxic masulinity" are very recent, culturally specific terms that can't be applied so broadly to "our hunter gatherer phase" because that implies there was a period of history where culture was the same for all people all over the world at the same time, which is unlikely to be the case.

Self-determination and certain uses of skillfully living in the moment are keen survival tactics. There are many ways to deploy these ideas, and they get rediscovered over and over again. It was easy to find myself feeling a sense of the familiar in Buddhism and Daoism. To me, they're similarly of a piece, though there's not really an asceticism inherent to Cool. There's more a sense of restraint than restriction, at least in my opinion and experience.

  • I think the dangerous part about trying to be cool is when people start to recognise coolness as a form of legitimacy because it encourages a certain idea of behaviour that defines coolness as opposed to just feeling comfortable being yourself. And even if people start to recognise coolness as just being yourself, a lot of people will still have their own ideas of what that means or looks like.

  • I think this is a very interesting topic. Both because of differing outlooks on what defines cool and in how you essentially get to that ideal. Because while this is awesome, and I genuinely feel and vibe with a lot of this, my perspective is different yet we came to similar conclusions through different people, wisdom that defies the ages. For me I was always looking up to strong or skilled people in my life, at one point it was wrestlers(undertaker), then it became skilled artists, then it became skilled martial artists. I became absolutely obssessed with nearly every fighting sport there is, and in that journey I eventually stumbled upon the writings of musashi miyamoto. So imagine I've gone through looking at the lives of all of the best combatants over the last few centuries and then all that wisdom is trumped by the simple wisdom in Musashis writing. For me that became my inspiration, what my definition of cool is. Being a scholar athlete as Plato said. Being strong enough that no-one around can beat you while pursuing your arts, and the gentler aspects of life. Because that is essentially the entire life journey of musashi, getting to the point that he learned to control his anger and violence and become civilized in his own way. That just resonates too much with my journey I have had to go on. My life used to be defined by my anger. But then I decided to actually try getting back into combat sports and getting humbled as I did made me realize how deep the pond of fighting really was. Like I had been in a similar boat to musashi, frustrated and wanting challenge, and then you get humbled, work on self improvement, come back and win.

  • When i think about people who i think are cool im thinking: hector bellerin, the isley brothers, jimi hendrix. The thing they all have in common is they dress in a particular way, almost stoicly. They wear clothes that arent particularly appealing to the masses, yet because of their confidence they can rock it and look cool as fuck. Being cool is a state of mind, its unadulterated confidence, self belief and not giving a fuck about what people think.

  • intuitively I came to a similar conclusion, the origins of coolness lie in the traditional african spirituality which is quite unique. Coolness is a sublime style of effortless elegance, of a transcendental detachement, a silent knowledge of the secret of life that defines what is traditionally called a living ancenstor.

  • i think being cool is being a badass + gentleman at the same.. having a strong flow of danger and order in you. being in a state of constant action. you never are swept up in thought because you have too much danger like a psycho or too much order and just are not dangerous or capable of changing life the way you wish. because we all know people who just do what they want in life and pursue their dreams are totally cool. but we only wanna be around them though if they are actually still orderly enough to not be a danger to others or victimize others. but we also are not that attracted to people who do not do anything they wish. they always do what others want them to do.. follow every rule.. and fear any repercussion of being themselves or choosing something risky. a balance of danger and order is super ideal.

  • i love how coolness seems to be what every boy desires and simultaneously somewhat non maskulin(it is masmulin since it is stoic but also not so much since it is trying to avoid confrontation and not being a tryhard(at least not visibly which is often feminin(natural -wink- beauty)))

  • One of the coolest things you can do is to try to be nice to people. Resist urges to shoot people down, go out of your way to help a friend, go out of your way to help a stranger. If someone shoots you down your not going to get anything out of it and they’re not going to get anything out of it if your mean back to them. That doesn’t mean be a pushover, if someone keeps harassing you give them some pushback, it just means don’t go out of your way to give them trouble. Uh yeah.
