The guys dive into a favorite topic around the office; backcountry food. For some, food is overanalyzed, weighed out, and planned to an exact macro breakdown. For others, it’s a simple mix of items that taste good with not much regard to what it weighs or what the nutritional value is. The big question… what’s the best method? Listen in as the guys drop all sorts of tips, strategies, and methods they use when planning out their backcountry hunting food.

10 years ago, I took my hunting buddy on his first elk hunt. We backpacked 4 miles into a Colorado Wilderness. I gave him my gear and food lists about 2 months before we left. In there I mentioned that I like to eat peanut butter, bacon, and honey tortillas. I premake mine for the week and pack them in. On the second day he opens his pack and he brought an entire 10 pack of tortillas, a large jar or peanut butter, and a large Honey bear bottle of honey. He didn't eat half of it. We still hunt together each year, and he is now very dialed in on his food.
😂
My brother brought into the ruby mountains 5.5 miles a can of spray oil, a full roll of tin foil, a full jar of bbq sauce, a fishing pole and box of gear and various other odd items. He carried in 20 more pounds of stuff than me and I was carrying the scope and bow. The fish he caught and cooked was worth it for me anyway!
Foil packets of buffalo chicken (starkist) and garlic/olive oil couscous. 900 cals. Cheap, light, and actually pretty tasty.
Wattie's canned peaches 🍑 saved Sir Ed’s life during the 1977 “Ocean to Sky” expedition. bring what you enjoy eating.
Great podcast. Thanks guys
Thanks for watching!
My body runs best on fat and protein more than loading up with starch and sugar. A Green Belly Meal2Go bar and nuts are the foundation of my back country meal pack! Thanks guys
I really like Lorenzo's approach to the macros based on the metabolic baseline, Brady's clean foods desire and limiting of packaging, and Trail's overall approach to food that works for him. I am curious though why no one seemed to take the DIY approach to a lot of this stuff like Lampers tends to...not as a "have to" but as an option. Everything that everyone on the panel takes is a processed food item not one of which was caught/killed/harvested by the individual taking it (unless I missed something). I get that Go Hunt is a store...but you could certainly sell dehydrators, etc. as well. Nothing cleaner then food you grew, killed, or caught yourself. Love the content, love the store, love to support the hunting community with my $.
Packaroons not only tasty, but surprisingly filling.
all of @heatherschoice foods are BOMB!!! Love them!!
💯
A talenti container with couscous, beans and ramen flavor packet is great for stove less. Put the water in around mid day and its ready for dinner.
Trails perspective is great. While I’m certain that Lorenzo and Brady’s approach is scientifically better, there has to be something said about the placebo affect that Trail must have of him feeling that this is perfect for him. In a way, I feel like Trails angle offers more margin whereas Brady’s could get in his head if some meal went missing, for example. Granted, what do I know. To each their own!
you are absolutely onto something there! over-engineering definitely leads to overthinking so there is a very fine line. I wish my stomach would allow me to go the Trail route haha.
Lorenzo, do you have a food list? Your macro approach is spot on to how I eat
I’ve used Fritos as fire starters. Pretty sure that keeps them out of the clan eating category lol
Hydrogenated corn oil is NOT clean lol. This is some bro science.
Pretty expansive definition of clean
For a breakfast drink, mix Mocha flavored KaChava with coffee, and you can add protein powder, mct or even chocolate powder for flavor and kcals.
Thank you God's Blessings Great Podcast
When I weigh the balance between how much is it going to add to the suck by carrying more weight in (one time and while I’m at my best) vs how much it sucks to be hungry and not having the energy to really get after it, it’s a no brainer to bring more food. At best I’m carrying out 100+ lbs of extra weight at the end, at worst I’m carrying out a lighter pack with more energy.
Gushers and Skittles for me. Love them after dinner
If you guys didn’t know, at Jimmy John’s you can get “guts on the side” which is the guts of the bread and it’ll smash even flatter!
Hey Brady check out Backpackers Pantry Chicken pad thai for dinner. Its one of the better ones ive tried and has 46g protein and 840 cals.
One bad thing I found about going stove-less is if it gets cold at all, the bars are like biting into a rock haha.
id be lying if i said I wasn't worried about that haha...
Brady’s backcountry protein shake meal replacement Ide buy that
Planning a trip to Colorado next year. I will incorporate a handful of gels popular among marathon runners. Still including snacks and nightly freeze dried mountain house or peak. The gels I haven’t seen anyone talk of I thought could be good @bpnsups
Unsure if there are US stockists but Radix Nutrition do really good clean freeze dry meals here in NZ
Looking into this!
I'm a 4k cal. a day guy, and here's what I pack to get to 4k cal. in less than 2.5 pounds Alpen Fuel Granola: 650 cal. Pro Bar Meal: 400 cal. Nature's Bakery Fig Bar: 200 cal. Barnana Banana Coconut Bites: 135 cal. x 2 = 270 cal. Coconut Rolled Dates: 140 cal. x 3 = 420 cal. Kalahari Biltong Jerky: 160 cal. Old Croc Cheddar Bites: 90 cal. x 2 = 180 cal. Fritos 30 grams: 160 cal. Honey Stinger Honey Flavor: 150 cal. x 2 = 300 cal. Justins Peanut Butter: 210 cal. Peak Refuel (800 min cal.): 800 - 1090 cal. (depends on which one I eat) Snickers (gotta have dessert): 250 cal. 4,000 cal. total, 2.3 pounds ** not incl. is two liquid IVs** but, I don't count those cals. I've competed in endurance sports and played D1 football. I know what works for my macro. needs and my stomach. Obviously, this won't work for everyone. But, hoping it helps those who have high caloric and weight conscious needs. Cheers to GOHUNT for keeping us dialed in the backcountry!
Wasn’t a hunting trip, but a few days into an 8 day canoe paddle in the Adirondacks my buddy’s pack tipped over and out rolled 8 cans of beer… I made him share.
I’ve carried a few cans of Black Rifle Coffee into the mountains before.
Instead of a vacuum seal bag for meals, use a small ziplock bag. Weighs next to nothing, and you can reseal it with your water inside so you’re not spilling.
Consider GU. Genuinely changed the outcome of a triathlon I did. Used it this year on a backcountry hunt and it was perfect.
definitely looking into this - appreciate it!
@@lorenzosartini8796 well worth considering. Give it a shot on a hike
I definitely gotta figure out what I’m going to take with me this year. I can’t eat all those snacks through out the day like that. I came down with diverticulitis 3 years ago so I can eat seeds and nuts. But I’ll figure something out. Thanks for the video fellas. Ps - when it comes to food, it’s, it Smacks, not slaps 😂 I’m from the Bay Area where that saying came from lol if it’s good you would say “that shit is smacking” 😂
shit bud, that SUCKS. thats a major logistical headache to have to deal with... hahahah oh man - I appreciate you helping us sound up top date with the cool kids! we try but it just shows how out of touch we are😂
People from the Bay Area have their own language that doesn’t apply anywhere else in the world. It’s hella weird.
@@tallcip65 lol 😂 very true
do y'all ever bring packs of sourcream, butter or cheese to add to your peakmeals to add extra fat/kcal. or pack of meat like tuna
I never have but i really like the thought of that!
@@lorenzosartini8796 especially like a stroganoff, Tell Trail the reason he's not taking a dump, is because he's not drinking his coffee. it ain't good to be hiking around with 10 lb of shit in your GI system
Buddy pulled out a Costco sized back of UNsalted trail mix and a bag of apples 😂
You guys have been throwing a lot of smoke at some of the Hush boys on the last couple podcasts .. what's the backstory or is it just some classic "" hater going to hate". Don't get me wrong got a LOT of respect for both just something I noticed keep on putting out awesome information you guys rock!
Not a hater thing at all! I genuinely don't even remember mentioning anything here? I definitely don't want to create waves that don't exist - I am a locker room mentality kind of guy with my friends, so it could be just that showing a little too much haha. We have a lot of respect for them and are both friends and fans of theirs.
I've made some flat brim comments, but I'm from Utah and I still live here so I think that allows me the opportunity to do so :) No issues on my end with HUSH, good guys that love the outdoors and hunting!
KRAM is good but it’s also about $5.00 per sandwich
Why doesn’t Brady make his own dehydrated meals?
Brady talks a lot of trash on added sugar but those green belly bars be adding that sugar too..........
Believe me, I dislike sugar in all backcountry foods haha. I did go on a little rant about my wish for backpacking foods to focus more on health and what you need and dump the added sugar. Rather than trying to cater to a bigger market and make people addicted to their sugar fueled meals. It's a thought that keeps me up at night lol and a very valid thing to bring up. So I appreciate that!
@@brady_j_miller agreed added sugars are the enemy. I honestly don't now how you eat those green belly bars as your dinner just cause I need more volume at the end of a hard day haha.
Cliche, but I didn’t catch you guys talking about CBD oil. Lampers ain’t wrong - it’s great
man I always leave something out on these! yes, im a HUGE believer in CBD. i take a sleep supplement every night from a brand called "Beam" that has CBD in it. I LOVE IT
@@lorenzosartini8796 nice!
@@lorenzosartini8796Lorenzo, just curious about what meals are best in morning? More heavily weighted towards carbs, proteins or fats? Or does balance matter more than when you consume a specific nutrient?
Trail would pass out 10 times a day if he lived in the body of half the blue collar construction workers in this country 😂
Brady trying to say literally
😂
Lmao, six days to poo! It's all that cheese. Take some benefiber packets.
Who else out there packs in a bottle of Coca Cola?

😷CLIFF BAR🤮
Y'all need to move back from the mic, I can hear your tongue smacking the top of your mouth.
