I work with cancer patients and let me tell you, it takes whole lot of effort mentally and physically for terminal phase stomach cancer patients just to get up in the morning. Raoul would deserve posthumous oscar for that fact alone.
I have a question since he had stomach cancer. How did he put on weight for the role after the chemotherapy? I heard stomach cancer leads to malnutrition since you can't properly absorb what you eat

I couldnt even leave my bed for a couple of months after starting chemo, took a while to have the strength to walk again

My mom and I saw this opening day in 1994. I remember she turned to me in the almost empty theater in the middle of the film and said, "Is it OK if I root for the bad guy in this one?" And I'm like, "Heck yes it is."

Ah, Raul Julia. What an awesome guy. He took the role for his children, as they loved Street Fighter. And he did it while battling stomach cancer. Now, as far as cancers go a cancer of the stomach doesn't sound like it would be one of the worst, but it actually is. As far as sheer pain is concerned, a wound or cancer in or around the stomach is the most agonizing as it's not something that will produce a quick death. It's not as immediately incapacitating as the heart or lungs or liver...but God, does it hurt. With other, more immediately fatal forms of cancer, one might say the victim dies mercifully quickly (comparably). But with stomach cancer...it takes more time to pass away. This movie was produced in 1994. Before it, in early 1994, Julia was diagnosed with the cancer. Before 1994 would end, he would be dead. Between that, he worked this movie. Simply amazing, considering the pain he must have been in. And more touching still - he did this movie not for money, but for his children. And when he completed his role here, he died. A handful of weeks following his last line as M. Bison, he would be dead. He was at the threshold of death's door throughout this performance. Such an amazing actor and man and father.
The bizarre thing is that the cancer didn't even kill him. He died of a stroke.

Raul Julia as M. Bison was the best thing about this movie. While dealing with Stomach cancer, he went out and gave 110% in his performance because his kids were fans of the game. As big of a fan that i am of Van Damme, its no secret that he slept walked through his performance while being paid higher than anyone in the cast. Julia always maintained that professionalism even while he was dying, and i have that much more respect for him for doing it.

You guys never done roids. I'm pretty sure it was Jean-Claude Van Damme. He is the one known for his physique and has extremely good tequnique in martial arts for being an actor with some very powerful kicks. Zangief was just a normal big guy actor never known for being shredded and jacked if he had done steroids he would have alot bigger delts & traps
Raul Julia was dying when he filmed this movie. But if you watch the movie, it doesn't even look like he was sick, he still gave an incredible performance. RIP.

I was just a couple years older and yeah I knew it was bad LOL Raul Julia as Gomez Addams made me a fan (of his and of The Addams Family; he plays the part perfectly, a weirdo with a bunch of weirdos who all love each other and will accept anyone else as family too, if you're willing to do the same..good message) and I loved his performance in this of course, but I was pretty sad at how terrible the movie was, being his last role 😔 he deserved better, or at the very least he deserved to know that years later such a terrible flick would have so many people who remember and love it just for him.

Whether you love, hate or are indifferent to the Street Fighter live action movie. One thing connects us all....Our appreciation and love for the job Raul Julia did playing M.Bison. He made the role his own and to think he was actually dying when portraying him just goes to show how damn good this guy was. One of the most underrated actors of our generation
Bob Saget Agreed. His performance just goes to show how much you can turn a garbage of a script into pure gold just by giving one hell of a performance. This film (as well as those Addam Family movies) is good example of the work Raul Julia put into bringing these larger to live characters into reality.
BigK13372 delivery is key. overacting can save a bad script as well as sink a good script. the method of delivery determines which way it goes.

This is one of my favorite movie scenes ever.
I remember 1995 as a 12 year old kid being so devastated upon hearing news of Raul Julia’s passing, amazing personality and such charisma. M Bison as his last role ? Actually righteous.
Critics hated it, but as 9 year old kid I loved it. Thank you Raul!

It’s as if Raul Julia wasn’t acting. He enveloped who Bison is. I truly believe he should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. My humble opinion.
Given how bad the rest of the movie was its not a surprise that it was overlooked. But its only because of Julia's performance that this film is fondly remembered. The man was a masterful actor & a great human being.
Definitely better than Ryan Gosling in Ken who also hams it up also

@@willarddennis9415 To you it wasn't. Honestly Venom itself was the only redeeming character in the movie (hence the name of the film itself), everyone else was either mediocre at best or forgettable. I'll even admit I'd take Street Fighter: The Movie over Venom (that's right I said it!)

Interestingly, there are 2 books called "The metaphysics of war" and the "Secret of the Grail", which are about what it means to have a "warrior spirit" and what unites traditions like Kung Fu, Knighthood, Martial Arts, Samurais and so on. Interestingly, what Raul Julia did to make this movie, despite his cancer and pain. That he basically risked absolutely everything to complete the project. According to nearly all cultures of the world, this is the essence of the true warrior spirit. And this is why some militaries have slogans like "per aspera ad astra", which mean "reach the stars by willingness to endure hardship and suffering."
Really good point about Raul at the end. Sometimes people forget that this was a passion project despite how it turned out. I blame the studios for rushing it more than anything.

There are a lot of actors who take these roles because of their kids (for example, Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever), and then they phone in the performance. Not Raul, he gave his all in this performance...and he was fucking dying! That is a legend, man.
Maybe Raul did all his stunts for one reason: He wanted to his kids to see he did all the action moves. He gave 100% to this role! A great actor and a great father! RIP!

Raul Julia reminded me of Bela Lugosi in that he would give his all no matter how silly the material was. A true professional and a good man.

Raul was such a great actor! He is sorely missed. I think it's also why he put so much of himself in this movie. He knew it was possibly his last movie and wanted to pour all that he had left into this movie. You can tell in his acting and just how seriously he took the role but at the same time had fun doing it.
He did what he did. Even dying in his last moments of life. He made it enjoyable.
Just goes to show how awesome and professional Raul Julia was. He only took the role because it would makes his children happy and even though it was totally not the type of movie he would normally do he still poured out his heart and soul into the performance and for me that made that movie great.
Really, he was by far the best actor on the set (heck, most likely the only actor, lol), and while the rest of the cast didnt gave a shit about the movie because they knew it was "just some video game movie for kids", this man gave one of the best performances of his career.
After hearing this story. Raul Julia is my hero now.

Julia knew this was going to be his last role. He wanted to go out with a bang. He'd be proud today knowing he saved a really bad movie and turned it into a classic.
To this day, I study the speech M. Bison made when he heard of Guile’s fake death, and then think of Zangief saying, “That was beautiful.” I crack up afterwards; always.
The real beauty of Street Fighter is the fact that it embraces its campness and rather than shying away from it just turns it up to 11 the whole way through the movie! The writers embraced the sheer absurdity of the game when drafting the script and the actors went all in on hamming up their performances. However I fully agree that Raul Julia is the true jewel in the crown of this camp masterpiece. His performance was outstanding! (Even topping Frank Langela's stellar interpretation of Skeletor in Masters of The Universe!) As a 13 year old when I saw this for the first time in 1994 I was blown away by how good he was and now (considerably older!) I can appreciate his performance even more so. AND....to top it all off learning that he did this movie as a final gift to his children.....the man was a legend!
I remember watching that Masters of the Universe movie. Now that I'm older, I still occasionally watch it because of Langela's Skeletor. For some reason, the actors playing the bad guys can turn it up to 11 and turn pure crap into pure gold.
Say what you want about the film, but Raul Julia gave a performance of a lifetime. Pure genius.

I remember watching this as a kid. I didn't know it was even considered as a "bad" movie. All I cared about was that there was JCVD and it was about Street Fighter. For what it's worth, the best scene for me was when Zangief said, "Quick! Change the channel!" Gets me even till today. Great video by the way, especially when you mentioned that it was for his kids.
JCVD is the reason I hated it. And the fight scenes were cheesy at best. The only thing that kept the movie moving was Bison.

I had never explored Raul Julia's motivations for taking up the role of M. Bison. Now that I know, I have a much deeper appreciation for him that goes beyond his work. Time for a SF and Adams Family rewatch!

Addams Family Values is one of the most underappreciated movies in history. It was a laugh a minute and subtly so dark.

Finally someone out there loves Raul Julia as much as I do. He was a truly amazing actor. A powerful screen presence. He could be completely over the top and also quietly stoic. Like all the greats, when he was in a scene, he was the actor that drew your eyes to his performance. Everyone else was on the screen just to support his performance.

Bayu Aditya H It's bad bad. When Street Fighter came out, film critic Leonard Maltin called it the worst video game movie ever. But when once he saw The Legend of Chun Li, he stated Chun Li made Street Fighter look like Gone With The Wind in comparison.
Yeah the Legend of Chun Li is stupidly bad. However, mostly because it just flat out destroys any existing lore and made a very terrible movie out of it. The original Streetfighter movie isn't any better though.

"PARENTAL LOVE" It's the thing that saved this movie. Without it, Julia would end up notbeing overtly motivated to star as M. Bison... The true star of the franchise.
Raul Julia would have continued to be an incredible force in cinema. One of the tragedies in my life time. His best films were yet to be made.
Its camp. This movie is fucking amazing just like The Room, or the Batman Adam West TV show. And making camp isnt easy. For example, Batman & Robin was plain bad, because it didnt took itself seriously, for a movie to be campy, it needs to take itself seriously while being absolutely absurd. And Raul Julia...Jesus Christ, the guy was dying, he was playing a video game villain, but he didnt care, he was the first on set, and always remembered his lines (unlike most of the cast), he gave his all for the role...like the director said, "Raul was the only one with an excuse for not caring about the movie, but he was actually the one who showed the most care for it".

This movie is legendary in my eyes. I grew up watching him in Street Fighter and the Addams Family. Raul Julia was a great actor in his lifetime and there will never be another actor like him. Rest In Peace Raul 🇵🇷

This movie cost a trillion Bisondollars to make. But joking a side. Raul's commitment to make a movie memorable for his children is real tear jerker. If that is not fatherly love i don't know what it is.
I actually teared up when you explained raul julias reason for taking the role. Funnily enough him going through production and death would make great oscar bait.
In high school drama class, I did the Col. Guile speech for a performance. I dressed up just like him and even tried to do his accent! It was funny! I got an A+ though!

Lol, as a 7 year old, I did not see this as a bad movie or care about “camp” at all. I took this movie seriously, and that speech always got me pumped up

New found respect for Raul Julia! I had no clue of his reasons to take on the role. As a child, I did very much enjoy the movie part of also being a JVC and action / fighting movie in general aficionado + as an SF2 World Champion arcade fan. What an inspiration, may God take care of his soul!
I never knew that Julia was dying due to the cancer, and take this role just for his kids ... this really hit me hard. I first saw this movie on vhs in like 96/97as a kid and liked it like every other JCVD action movie, but Julia stole the film with his dedication for M.Bison, now I know why he did this, and I am glad that he took this oppurtunity.

Fun fact: The soundtrack for the film is amazing especially if you're a fan of 90s hip hop. It features Ice Cube, MC Hammer, The Pharcyde, Nas, LL Cool J, Paris and Ahmad (Back in the Day) It even has a scrapped track from Nas's Illmatic which is considered by some to be the best hip hop album of all time.
Funny enough, my favorite vocal track in the film is the Chage & Aska song, Something There. It's not a hiphop at all, but like a relic of the 80's made in the 90's.

As a kid in the 90s I friggin loved this movie back in the day. I caught it recently expecting it to be the worst movie ever and it was bad, but Godamn was I entertained. Awesome retrospect on this film!

I think I've seen this film at least 30 times when I was younger. You managed to perfectly point out what makes it so damn enjoyable. Time for a rewatch!
Yeah, as kids, me and my sister saw this movie twice in theaters. Then a little before it released on video it was available to order and watch at a Holiday Inn my sister's friend's dad managed, so when her and her friend stayed in a room one night as a sort of "spend the night" party while her friend's dad worked a graveyard shift they ordered it and recorded it on a VHS. So basically we had the movie even before it was out on video and I gotta say we watched that sucker at least 30 times. Looking back on it now I realize how many times my mom had to put up with that movie playing on the TV from us rewatching it so much; although, I am pretty sure she was a big Raul Julia fan so that probably helped a bit.

Raul Julia's absolutely amazing performance as Bison aside for a second, can we just appreciate that he absolutely rocked that cape?! Damn, the outfits were awesome in this movie. MUCH better than that godawful Legend of Chun Li crap...

I genuinely believe that no one can portray M. Bison the way Raul Julia did. Not even the Street Fighter 2 animated movie did justice on Bison's personality.

Julia's motivation to play Bison in this movie, all the while knowing that his fate in life was sealed with cancer, just shows the wholesome and dedicated man he was. Everyone deserves to watch this movie, just for him.
