  • I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and the worst earthquake I've been in was in 1989 and it was 6.9 magnitude. Parts of freeways and the bridge collapsed. We lived up on a hill overlooking the Bay and our house didn't have any damage, it just rocked back and forth. Our house was on a major fault line too. I moved to central CA and rarely feel anything higher than a 3.0 now (thank god!).

    • I was in California’s Bay Area. In San Jose on a job interview lol 😝 6.9 the asbestos panels and overhead light panels were banging and the ceiling panels falling out! It was a ro. The bay bridge cracked open . Freeways 🛣️ collapsed. The World Series had begun in San Francisco so freeways were relatively empty. Some cars were crushed. Some deaths. Took many many months (18 plus) to repair.

  • I've been in probably 30 earthquakes throughout my life. There's shakers & there's rollers. That one looked like a shaker. 4.8 is substantial.

    @josephhaddakin7095@josephhaddakin7095Ай бұрын
    • I'm from California so you know I've been through them. I don't mind the ones that roll with a mild shake. However, a jolt or horrific shaking STILL affects my nervous system. Lol

      @anngrubbs2436@anngrubbs2436Ай бұрын
    • Joseph's right. 4.8 is substantial. Living in northwest L.A. I've been through quite a few myself. The rollers you feel you can 'ride out' a lot better, and they're less scary than the violent shaking. When we have or hear about 4.0 earthquakes out here, they're usually no big deal with minimal damage. 4.5 is starting to get serious, and each point above that is bad. 5.0's are very scary. After the extremely severe January '94 Northridge quake, we had after shocks in the 5-6 range. I got caught off guard that March in an aisle of the Sherman Oaks Thrifty Drug Store when a 5.1 aftershock hit. The lights went out and glass bottles were crashing all around me. A bad place to have been roller or shaker, this was the latter. I just held on to one of the shelves til it stopped and got out shortly after uninjured. Very lucky under the circumstances.

    • Their buildings aren't built to code like ours on the west coast. They are prehistoric vintage old 1800's structures. They would be crushed if they waited it out inside, I fear. I understand our earth quake shakeout program pnw practice here but their building structures aren't the same! Also, subways & stuff underground. They need to do what feels right depending on the building or structure they are in. Protect your head at all costs! Don't panic.

    • @@Hello-its-Me-Fair but I don't know. Some of the worst damage we had in Seattle during the last sizable earthquake was in Pioneer Square with historic brick buildings. The damage was outside with bricks falling onto the sidewalk. I think that's why I thought about staying inside being the better option.

      @KateWitt@KateWittАй бұрын
    • @KateWitt I remember it like yesterday outside of Seattle Wa. about & hour ish north. I remember exactly where I was on that very day. It's truly a crap shoot. Some of their beautiful historical buildings, especially looking at 1800's style buildings, I truly worry about. It wasn't too long ago rain & wind brought down a building in the Bronx's. 3 months ago, actually. It was on the news. Those are the ones I speak of taking me chances on & going outside, but covering your head at all costs!

    • @julief634 Just a suggestion that I do living in the PNW earthquake zone is have some slip-ons shoes on the floor next to your bed or wherever you sleep & a flashlight if needed in case of power outages. The shoes save your feet from broken glass or falling debris. Have a plan in mind & maybe share that with someone just on case you're stuck somewhere someone will know. Also, a backpack or overnight bag with basics if you have to run for the hills or high ground after the shaking stops. You have some basics like glasses or undies, socks, small blanket, water, snacks, spare cell chargers, or any medicine if you take any, Important Documents like ID or passport. Being prepared is a wise thing. Also, be mindful of possible tsunami waves if it is an intense earthquake. Seconds matter! Never panic. I don't go with the flow of others. I follow my gut intuition, which is the best decision during an emergency situation.

  • “People running to safety outside a coffee shop” this is dangerous reporting language, it is NOT safe to run out of a building during an earthquake because you are much more likely to be struck by falling debris or windows outside. • I took my son to Washington DC for a week to tour the White House and Capital in 2011. We were about to go into the Washington Monument, but he was afraid of heights so we did not go inside. I was really disappointed when we left. Ten minutes later we were standing on the street and felt the ground under us move and shake. We would have been in the epicenter of the earthquake had we actually gone into the Washington Monument. When we got to the airport to return home, everything was being boarded up for Hurricane Irene! We made it out, but what a memorable trip we still talk about today! Such an amazing area even with an earthquake and a hurricane!

All these episodes of distress have been around for gallons of years, BUT now this is a composite sign of the things that are happening. All over the world, now.
