  • Skip, that is what a Velociraptor is now thought to look like as they've found quill knobs in one of the specimens ulna (2007 in velociraptor specimen IGM 100/981) but if you thought that they were larger you can blame Hollywood for that, Jurassic Park used the wrong name and wrong dino, they had a raptor yes but the dino animatronic was a Utahraptor and not a velociraptor one but they called it a velociraptor so that just stuck.

    @MegaRazorback@MegaRazorbackАй бұрын
    • Wasn't utahraptor discovered after jurassic park came out?

      @ponseth198@ponseth198Ай бұрын
    • @@ponseth198 Utahraptor was also larger than the ones from Jurassic Park. The ones in JP were based more on Dynonychus, which was considered by some to be another species of Veloiraptor at the time. Michael Crichton thought that the name Velociraptor sounded better, since then it could be shortened to just raptor

      @dimetrodon2250@dimetrodon2250Ай бұрын
    • Utahraptor was described in 1993 after Jurassic Park was finished. Kirkland et al actually considered naming it after Spielberg but his lawyers said no

    • Isn’t like the canon lore that the velociraptors were upscaled and the feathers removed because the park builders thought that would make them scarier?

      @krishsankhe@krishsankheАй бұрын
    • @@krishsankheJust the upscaling thing, the feather lore was added in Jurassic World, for a pretty simple reason: When the first two Jurassic Parks came out feathered non-avian dinosaurs were still unknown. The first clearly non-avian dinosaur with feather impressions (a compsognathid) was described in 1995 and the first dromaeosaurs with feathers were described around 2000. The raptors were actually supposed to have a full coat of feathers in JP4 but then stuff happened and they decided to lean more into the "corporate playing god" angle for world
