Some of the best slow motion shots I’ve ever seen. Prolly helps how freaking huge that projectile is. Edit: I was right! If you watch the slow mo at x.25 playback speed closely, you can the projectile coming out the front of the helmet after it hits the lip, causing it to mushroom and leave the dent at the point of impact. Can even see it land on the table.

  • Just in case people had some inflated expectations about this helmet, let me clarify the background a bit. First of all, the Altyn was designed for internal troops and special forces. That is, for people who storm houses and fight in closed spaces. It was assumed that law enforcers would fight against criminals, terrorists, armed mostly with pistols, hunting rifles and only in rare cases with automatic assault rifles. And since such operations are fast, the Russians decided to protect the head of the wearer to the maximum with available materials at the time without really putting attention to it weight. Therefore, it is configured to protect the wearer's head from all sides, including the face. Since the helmet appeared in the 90s, and it was first seen in 1993 during the Constitutional crisis of Russia, it kind of predetermined the material from which the "Altyn" family would be made - titanium, a rare and very hard metal, which is abundant in Russia. However, life takes its course, and, unfortunately, the helmet, as well as their owners, will often be used in combat actions against which it was not really created (admittedly, few weapons and equipment created by the Soviets and Russians are used for their intended purpose). In the 2000s, Kevlar helmets gradually began to supplant titanium helmets because of their lighter weight and supposedly better protection. Some special forces operators and ex internal troops remain of the opinion that the titanium helmet family should have been further developed. Edit: I was corrected, it's not "Altyn," it's К6-3, or 6Б6-3 made out titan. "Altyn" is metal version of the helmet.

    • Interesting. It looked to me like a bomb suit helmet - heavy, minimum mobility, restricted peripheral vision, but very durable (under design conditions). It seems to me that, yes, there is room for additional development.

      @lairdcummings9092@lairdcummings90924 ай бұрын
    • @@lairdcummings9092 Yes, the helmet even at that time had a lot of disadvantages, such a heavy weight is literally a health threat to your neck if you wear it too long (russians concluded that it should not be worn longer than 8 hours). At times the lowered visor would prevent you from using the butt of the weapon. Most Special Forces soldiers would find it too big, which is why footage from the Chechen campaigns shows them wearing hats under the helmet, and also sometimes removing the visors. However, you have to give it credit for saving quite a few lives. And thanks to modern video games, the helmet has become a meme. You know, it's a Vibe, everything about it screams that it's made in Russia. Edit: I was corrected ones more, it doesn't ring like a bell when you fire your gun since it has a kevlar layer inside.

    • @@gunther2555 iteration is the answer. Lots of cycles of testing with real troops. The man who led the development of the US Army kevlar helmet worked for my father at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, in the Human Engineering Lab - they iterated the living hell out of that helmet, got field soldiers' input and opinions, and tested all manner of hearing protection, communications connectivity, and communications intelligibly. I mean, they went *NUTS* on the testing. The Army didn't approve everything they wanted, nor did the Army buy everything that was approved, but it wasn't from a lack of thought and trial.

The function of it was basically that if an angry buffalo or an angry grizzly bear was charging at you the idea was to whip out the four bour and stop the animal on its tracks. The reason why its such a comically large caliber is because its designed to stop a giant meat train that is running at you with murderous intent

    • @@jagc1969 but idk what hes referring to, I'm just saying the punt gun couldn't be classified as a rifle and is loaded from the barrel like a cannon. Although there are some very large shotguns similar to this (which they really didn't know wether to call them shotguns or rifles) like a 2-8 gauge shotgun. An 8 gauge shotgun is practically speaking this same gun.

  • For comparison, the KS-23 was made using spare 23mm anti-aircraft barrels and is roughly a 6.3 gauge or bore. That means this rifle’s caliber is larger than an anti-aircraft caliber round.

    • Makes sense, since the 4-Bore is pretty much twice the diameter of a .50 cal, leaving it somewhere around 25mm, or about the size of the main gun on a Bradley 😂 Edit: that gives me an idea... along the same vein where you can *technically* fire a .50 cal through a 12 gauge, right? Well....
