  • A few things: After Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area, city officials there consulted engineers from the Netherlands about flood control. You can see more Dutch influence in New York City with the names of neighborhoods like Harlem. Several landmarks are named after Peter Stuyvesant, the last director-general of New Netherland (what is now part of the eastern coast of the U.S.) Ik ben 1.91 meter en ik heb één fiets.

    • Ik ook. At this point I'm understanding far more than I can speak though. When I try to say what I'm thinking, I'm still having to think in English and convert, but I'm having trouble with word order and vocabulary recall. I can't quite think in Nederlands yet. I've been working on the Duolingo course, but I'm only a couple weeks in. Watching "Easy Dutch" and Kim's channel are helping. I've also started watching NOS, but that's still mostly way over my head. Good luck, Paola. Tot ziens!

  • We also speak a dialect of Dutch in South Africa called Afrikaans, which is a simplified form of Dutch. It looks like this in written form: Ons praat ook 'n dialek van Hollands in Suid-Afrika, genaamd Afrikaans, wat 'n vereenvoudige vorm van Hollands is. As you can see, 'n is the shortened form of een. My surname is actually French since I'm a descendent of the Huguenots. Nourtier. The Cape Dutch changed the spelling to help them with pronunciation and we eventually adopted the spelling. Nortje.

My Dutch friend (a 1.88m tall woman, so also helping to confirm fact #9) came to visit in August, and while she was here, I've never seen so many cars with Dutch number plates. I counted about 16 cars over 3 days. By contrast, in the same time I think I saw two German, one Spanish, one French and a handful of other cars from mainland Europe.
