That's how my grandfather died the week I was born, 46 years ago. He was fishing with a friend and to where down stream and did not hear anything, they felt a rumble and a big wall of water. He yelled at his friend to run, to climb up as he was higher on the river bank, He got swept away and cracked his head on rocks. He saved his friend.

The siren is mostly to warn anyone downstream in advance.

The release gates are high up on the dam. Glen Canyon has them much lower which helps to remove silt build-up.... I wonder if silt build-up is a problem on this dam?

The entire country of japan has the loudspeaker siren system. So the sirens you heard wernt 2. There are about 18 of them in the area. If you listen at ths announcments at the beggining, you can here the echo of the other sirens. Then a radio tone, then the 4 down chime to conclude the announcment. Really cool system
