Godox VL300 Video Light Review || A VERY bright Video Light
The Godox VL300 is a VERY bright video light, and in this video I dive into everything you need to know about it. I've had this video light for over 7 months (at the making of this video) and I believe the Godox VL300 is not only a bright light but a great alternative to the Aputure 300d mkii. The Godox VL300 is a great video light that has really changed my work for the good. Let me know your thoughts on this light below in the comments!

Great video, Heather! Your shots and delivery are very polished. Good work!
Thank you, Gerald! :D I appreciate the kind words
Thanks you two! Just made my decision easy and saved me 500$
Pro tip... Curve your gels so that air can escape the top and bottom. That will make your gels not melt. :) Great review!
Thanks for the tip!
love your input and i always go back to your videos for my camera gear needs!
Glad to hear it!
Good review Fellow Filmmaker! Nice to see someone talk about the light after having used it for months. Have this one on order. Looking forward to its arrival. Been using 120D for years and wanted more output. Hoping this will do the trick.
Glad it was helpful! Hope you enjoy the light too! :D
Very helpful reviews :) Thorough and thoughtful. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Heather! If I didn’t already have the 300d II, I’d definitely consider this. Aputure also has their sidus link app, which is a massive plus. Really loving seeing your channel grow, excellent content, as always!
I like the sidus link app myself, so I totally get it! :D Thanks for watching and following the growth of the channel! :D
Great Video!! Thanks for the help with the App!
Happy to help!
Great review as always. For fan noise I recommend upgrading to Noctua fans. Yes this does mean you will need to crack open your light but it is a bolt in replacement and simple to do for any noisy fan.
Thanks for the tip!
Great review, very helpful!
Glad to hear it!
Clean shots, well spoken dialogue, amazing video
Thank you so much 😀
Great review, I like your energy. I have VL200 and I love it ;)
Awesome! Thank you! I hear the VL200 is great! :D
Wonderful as always
Thank you so much 😀
I like all your videos It's easy to understand with your way of approach. U have a super clarity about your content which is your big strength And try to put more videos on cinematic contents... With some examples
It's my pleasure :D Glad it's helpful
thanks for sharing what not to do with light modifiers! appreciate sharing it to us.
You bet!
Awesome !! just what I was looking for :)
Great! So happy to hear that :D
I am relatively new to youtube. And when I upload a video I feel like I'm trying a lot for the reception I have. Then I see the quality of your videos and I realize that I am a poor devil. You should have a lot more subs
Very kind of you!
I used to think 300 watts would be overkill for my needs, but it seems more and more practical all the time. Thanks for this!
Haha, I know what you mean
Don’t say things like this Tom! I am trying to curve my gear acquisition syndrome haha
I will buy my first lights and I am actually wondering whether to get 3 UL150 or 3 VL300. Especially now that the UL150 is 319 and the VL300 is 499. I don´t know if the UL150 will give me enough power especially when using gels. Any insights? Thanks :)
@@tubeman1983 price per watt just get the 300. It just makes sense for the deal you are going to get. You at least have the choice to do 150W on the 300 but you cant do the other way around
Great Video ! Thank you for the effort you put into this ! (But that thumbnail... Yes, I will never surrender ! :p)
Thanks for watching! Haha, don't worry, I think it's the last of it's kind! I agree it's a bit dorky and I certainly hope to move away from that :D
@@FellowFilmmaker I WON ! xD
Haha! :D
Very helpful, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great review. I really like the Godox lights as an alternative to Aputure. :-)
Thanks! :D And they are good lights!
always love your videos! since this video has been out for a while, is there any other 300w light you'd recommend as an update? or do you still think this light is worth it in 2023? Thanks so much for your help in advance!
I think this one in particular is ok, but I prefer other lights a bit more. The amaran line is good, only goes to 200w tho. So if you need 300w for sure, then the Godox m300 would maybe be a slightly better upgrade.
Great review as always. Have you done a review on the 100 and the 150 yet?
I'm working on doing the UL150 soon!
@@FellowFilmmaker Awesome!
You are awesome 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Hey Ma'am, Again really well explained. Your videos are so informative. Just wanted to ask, which snoot to use with this light and ad 600 pro ?
I've just been using a really basic snoot and it does alright. You can find it on my kit: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
Thanks for the review!!! can you talk about VL150 light? Thank you so much!!!
I get this request so often, haha! I'll see what I can do! :D
Looooove my VL150! I kinda wish I had just bought the big one... not that I need anymore power, but the 300 is def one of those shiny things I want!! lol
I know the VL150 is great too! But yes, the VL300 is great for really bright needs!
Fellow Filmmaker I’m not sure how to decide between the 150, 200 and 300. Could you please help. Thank you!
The faceted reflector I thought would have been good for an umbrella. In the end the light is too concentrated in the middle and the beam spread not enough without having the umbrella shaft very far from the light. Yet bare bulb into a deep umbrella is really good ( I have the FV 200 and 150).
True! :D Thanks for noting that
Great review 👍 I have the fv150 and i got my first dose of dashed expectations when on a shoot with late noon sun (of the tropical variety aka hellish), I wasn't able to get any hair/edge/rim action from it - in the shade, at full blast, with fresnel 2x. From the reviews, all done indoors btw, it seemed I could get at least 50% of Arri D25 HMI from this light but IRL it's more like 5% :P Now I'm tempted to get the VL300 after watching this video (bump that Arri dream upto 25% maybe) but I'll wait until next year to see if Godox comes out with a 500w options. Or maybe ima do a DIY Perks style 1000W COB build with ghetto CPU cooling parts :)
Have you looked at Nanlite or is that too pricey for you? I know their 200w is pretty amazing, so I imagine their 500w is about the same.
Thank you for this video! In regards to the color temperature i notice it is at 5600K, can you change that manually without the use of a remote or app?
Greetings from Japan! Thanks for posting this video! I have a couple of 1x1 panels lights but looking into getting a light such as the Apurture 300dii or alternative. Pricepoint wise this one is a strong contender! One question, how do you change color temperature? You mentioned that it gets so hot that it melted the gels. Did you find a good way to do this? Will now check all your other videos!
Hi there! So this is not a bi-color light, it's just daylight. So if you want to change the color you'll look to use gels. The reason I melted the gels is because I was improperly placing them over the light at 100% power, so that's why that happened. :p I think you'd be safe to use gels, properly of course, with this light if you need to. It's a great light at a great price.
Thanks for sharing you amazingly helpful work 🙏 I would like to know if you have had the chance to test out the Aputure Amaran 200x or 200d (or other Aputure Amaran)? If so, what is your opinion? Thanks a lot in advance ;-)
I own the 200d and it's a good light. Great for an affordable light of it's range.
My box was pretty beat up and my reflector dome was dented as well and I got mine last year. But everything else was perfectly fine.
awesome!
Thanks!
Thanks, On battery, can you still operate it at 100% or is the max light output reduced do you know?
Excellent review 👍 I have 2 question s Can I use it on a light stand(I don't have cstand it's expensive here) Can I use umbrella softbox with it?
Yes and yes :D I use mine on a light stand only, c-stands are not necessary for this light. And there is a mounting point for an umbrella, so yes
Love your video... One question, can we use battery for this model too?
Yes you can, it takes V-mount batteries :D
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks Heather, you are the best.
Thank you so much! Does it work only with one v-mount battery at half the power like the aputure?
There are slots for 2 v-mount batteries to run the light. So yes, battery power is an option with this light! :D
Hi ! And thx for your good review ! :) i would like to have your opinion on the differences between the Godox UL series and the VL series … I hesitate to buy UL150 or VL150. No fan (but more expensive) for UL150 ... is that really the only big difference between the two models ? Maybe a idea for a new review video !!! (i'M french, sorry for my bad english !) :)
Your english is fine, don't worry. And the main difference can be the UL150 has no fans, a bit more of a price (not too much), no remote (buy separate), no case. The VL150 has a case and remote it comes with, has fans, and is a tad cheaper. So ideally they are the same in output but have different benefits. Hope that helps.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thx ! :)
Have you checked out the Godox SL 200II? I need a really strong light for my main light and I'm in such a tight budget for these VL's or the Aputure ones. The SL and SL II are on holiday specials though but I'm not sure if the 200 ones are strong enough or if the 300's are overkill
I think the 200ii would be fine. I personally have not used it, but with the experience of the VL300 I think it would work perfectly fine. The 300 can be a bit overkill in some situations.
Hi ! Great videos ! Thanks ;) ! What Godox Light (VL150 or VL300) would you recommend for overhead video shots (like food video) ? Note that there is a lot of ambient light around my settings (big shared office with lights and huge windows) and I'm trying to get rid of it, to get the most homogeneous light on my videos. Cheers from France !
You could certainly get away with the VL150 if you are able to block ambient light. If not you might consider the VL300 if you're fighting with other light sources you can't control just incase you need to have that brighter light source.
@@FellowFilmmaker thanks a lot ;) ! It helps
Bought it yesterday on sale for $500 on Adorama!
Damn that’s a great price!
Aw sweet! :D I heard they were on sale, so glad you got it for that price!
For real! $250 off, yes please!
Damn, I'm happy for you, but is there any sort of group we can make for deals like this? Like a discord or something?
Would you please make a video about some ideas to control Color Temperature using these units? I have right now two UL150 and a VL300. I'm very used to light using tungsten fresnel lights and use lots of CTB and CTO gels to mix or get certain looks. I'm very worried that you mentioned that a gel just simply melt down in the front of the dome. Could it be the same If I put those gels in a gel holder form the Godox barn doors? Thanks so much. I'm also figuring out a way to make the same using soft boxes an lanterns (modifying color temperature).
The only reason I mentioned the gel was cuz it melted for me. I wasn't truly using it the most properly. Need to leave room for air to pass through for sure. So its best to have a dedicated gel holder if you plan to use them with this light.
Nice review! I went with the VL 150. I figured it was more power than I would need for most of my lighting situations and it only needed one V-Mount battery if I was not able to plug it in. I tried to cheat by getting an NPF to V-Mount adapter, but the two NPF batteries only lasted about 20 minutes before draining. Looks like I need to bite the bullet and get a real battery (or two). Have you used batteries to power the lights? I'm guessing I should not get a 95 watt hour battery for a 150 unless I don't want to record for long.
Yeah, NPF don't quite have enough power to last long on the bigger lights. You certainly will need a v-mount battery that has enough for the watt size of your light, and also amps. @NewLayer has a video on v-mounts that might help in figuring out which one you need, I believe @TommyCallaway does as well.
@@FellowFilmmaker Ooo...good call on New Layer. It turns out I was already subscribed, but I had not seen his V-Mount video.
Glad I could help! :D
My reflector dome was dented too with he UL150 lol, must be a standard thing but I luckily managed to push it out:p
How odd! Glad you got yours sorted out
@@FellowFilmmaker thanks Heather. I meant to ask you whether you use the honeycomb grid on your softbox most of the time or only for specific videos. I might have to buy that modifier down the track. Cheers
I use the grid alot, because I do often work in small locations that otherwise would bounce the light.
@@FellowFilmmaker thx Heather, watched your video about light modifiers in the meantime, got ya! I’ll be buying one sometime soon as well:)
I'm looking for a powerful video light but more portable, I'm always on the road and the thought of this setup, there's just so many connections to it.
Yeah, id recommend the godox m300d if you want a little more tidy Or you could always go with aputure
I wonder there is a led that you can change color temperature?
I’m curious to know if the 300d mark ii puts of that much heat considering the light dome ii has a gel holder that’s really close to the cob. Using this light with that gel holder could ruin the light dome or worse cause a fire hazard.
That's a really good point. I don't have that dome specifically to test it on, but I imagine there could be a chance of problems. If there is no ventilation it will melt the gel, for sure.
I'm a newbie when it comes to using lights to teach virtual fitness classes. If I buy the Godox VL300 with Bowens mount, do I need to purchase anything else to connect it to a beauty dish? I have a C-stand and sand bags...
As long as your beauty dish is a bowens mount then it should be just fine! The light comes with everything you need to power it, unless you're planning on powering it through batteries then you'd purchase those.
@@FellowFilmmaker thank you for your quick response! I appreciate the help 🙏🏼
You are most welcome! :D
These were on sale for $500 this weekend at B&H and Adorama.
Good to know! too bad they still arent' :/
@@FellowFilmmaker I'd have to guess they will be on Black Friday again.
That'd be nice!
@@FellowFilmmaker It's $499 today at Adorama today.
Hi Does VL300 and UL150 II work with the Godox SA-17 with Godox SA-P Projector? Any heat problems?
Yes they work with it It gets very hot but you can use it Godox says to use the projector only on lights up to 300w, not over, so you should be fine
@@FellowFilmmaker thank you!
@Heather: did you find out how far away you'd have to put the gel to prevent burning? Or is it about having space for heat to escape?
It's more about escape space, but having it as far from the source is of course the best, if it's possible
@@FellowFilmmaker yeah, well, buying gel by the roll to cover the softbox is fun but expensive.
Well... I guess I’ll be working more overtime before the holidays 😂
Oh boy! :D
I bought this VL300 light today ($359) but I am worried about all the negative reviews about this light that it breaks after sometime. In your other video you also said that the knob does not hold large light modifiers. Also how is that plastic hanging rope performing? I don't understand why this rope cant be a metallic one. How did they decide to keep a plastic rope into a electric unit that is heat prone? Does this rope break? Can you super glue that Vmount and remove the strap? Is your light alive or dead? Also can you review the new UL150 Mark 2?
The plastic has held, so that's good there. You certainly could find a unique was to rig it to the light stand I'm sure. My light was still running but I ended up selling it recently since I've not used it much lately. I'll have to look into the new UL150 :D
@@FellowFilmmaker I also learned this VL300 does not work with the new Good APP? That means I will have to switch the apps and cannot use single app for all godox lights. Except for the low light fan noise and 300W power, everything on this light is a drawback.
Yes, its on an older app, which I suppose is why they made the Godox M300d since it'll work on the new app
Where can I get a v mount strap? , please include the v mount strap link 🙏
I used the one that came with other Godox lights. You might search around and see if you can find one
Question, if it takes bowens mount modifiers and heat can be possible issue. Would certain modifiers melt. I currently have the Glow series of modifiers and looking foe reliable video light to use with my current modifiers. Would they be an issue or should I just use a scrim?
Ive not had modifiers melt. The gel melted to improper use is all. 🙄
@@FellowFilmmaker thank you very much
Do you think that all the gels would melt using these VL lights or is there a work around to change the temperature of the light? BTW these product videos are very Gerald Undone like. As if you know each other very well... hmmm...
Best idea would be to find a way to allow for heat to escape and keep the gel further from the light source. No work around for controlling heat output that I know of... Haha, Gerald is a great guy but his style can never be copied or even emulated, he's in a league of his own. :D
@@FellowFilmmaker I guess this problem occurs with most of the COB lights? Could putting the gel inside a softbox (For example sticking to rods) be suitable if trying to avoid melting?
I haven't tried it that way, but it's possible it could work
Would you still recommend this light? adorama is having a sale on them. Or would it be better to get aputure?
The light is pretty decent, I have a more recent video on it if you want to know what I think about it.
@@FellowFilmmaker are you referring to this one? Godox 300w video light comparison: VL300 vs M300d
Correct :D
Can I please know what lighting setup you used for this video😁
You can find the specific items on my kit (kit.co/fellowfilmmaker). But I used a Godox UL150, a Godox SL60w, a minimal lamp, moon light ball, yongnuo 360ii, and an aputure mc.

So if you can’t use gels, how do you adjust color temperature???
It's not a bi-color light, so you wouldnt. You'd use gels if you want to change the temp.
@@FellowFilmmaker you said it melted ur gels
Correct, at high temps without letting air pass properly. So it'd be best for low temps or having the gel further from the light source, I had it pretty close when it melted and didn't let air vent properly thus melted my gels. Didn't explain that well, sorry
I was wondering, is there any way to like make our own good looking profile in camera? I have a 200d even the neutral profile feels too dark or saturated, when i can edit the footage later i use the cine style profile but lets say for a zoom call or any other live application in which we cannot colour grade, any way to make a good looking profile by adjusting the values?😅 I try but in the end i be like aaaahhh this looks bad and i go back to the in camers profiles, thanks!
And i really like it to be light and colourful and vibrant!
That's a good question. What camera are you working off of?
@@FellowFilmmaker im using a canon 200d
Oh, right, totally missed that! Sorry. I'm not sure what to tell you honestly since in camera is hard to get the most best looking image. You could push the saturation levels, drop the sharpness to zero, and then keep it as bright as you can with aperture and iso. Otherwise I'm not sure what you can use during a zoom call.
@@FellowFilmmaker ok thanks!
Do u ever experienced auto shit off when it is plugged into a wall outlet? Sometimes unplug and plug it bak in to make it work ?
Nope, never had an issue with it turning off on its own
@@FellowFilmmaker thank you for the response. I am experiencing that issue. It was plugged in for couple days (even I used it on throes days) and I tried to turn it on after that it didn’t turn on then I had to unplug it from the power and plug it bak again. After that it turned off like in 5 mins or so
Hmm that's odd. Have you checked to be sure the plug is not faulty? Otherwise, it might be worthwhile to reach out as it shouldnt be turning off automatically.
@@FellowFilmmaker yeah I know right Yes I did checked that even I changed the plug same issue. So o am confused why it does that Thanks again for the reply
If you had to choose between a Godox VL300 or a Godox UL150 which would you choose?
Hmm, depends on what for. But I'd pick UL150 for the average shoot where I recorded with audio. I'd pick the VL300 for product video work since it's got power when I need it.
@@FellowFilmmaker How about for Fashion Video / Photoshoots in the studio?
@@FellowFilmmaker And can the VL300 be used with Strobes as well? Ideally, the VL300 could run during a fashion photoshoot. So I can film the shoot on one camera and shoot with strobes on another camera all at the same time. Is that possible?
The VL300 is not a strobe light, but godox does have lights that are both strobe and video light I believe. I think its the FS series of lights.
What is the difference between the vl family and the ul family?
The UL family is a fanless system, so it's totally silent
Hi Heather, does this burn the godox softboxes at 100%?
Not for me! Ive had em on full blast for hours with no issue.
@@FellowFilmmaker thanks Heather! Good to know. I’m scared because you mentioned that this light gets hot and burn accessories (gel, snoot etc). I guess if you only use it with the projector. Thanks anyway :)
Only if you have it too close and leave no space for air venting, which was what I did! :P
Please crank your bitrate / upscale. Your footage is super soft even a 1080p. Its like its 720
I'll look into it, thanks
Godox sl-200w ii vs vl 300 which one is better for more light output
Well the 300 is a 300 watt while the 200 is 200 watts, so the 300 will be brighter and have more output....
@@FellowFilmmaker my friend was saying godox sl200w ii is more powerful than vl300
Hm interesting. I don't think it would be since there is a 100 watt difference, but then again I could be wrong somehow :p
@@FellowFilmmaker please make comparing video

Hi, I am planning to mobile reviews... Can you make a video on how to video shoot for mobile unboxing or any other product unboxing in a professional way... I think that will help many new youtubers...not found any good quality video regarding this matter....
I don't ever do unboxing videos, so I wouldn't be able to make one about how to do that specifically. If you're looking for videos on how to shoot better with an phone, well I don't really shoot on my phone either... :P so, I don't see that being a video I'd make any time soon.

Yes! It's normally $750, so I'd say get it
@@FellowFilmmaker I will buy my first lights. Shall I get 3 VL500 at 499 each or 3 UL150 at 319 each? I don´t know whether I will get enough output when using gels with the UL150. I don´t know even know how much output I need in most situations anyway... I don´t have experience with lights. Any help, please? Thanks
The UL150 will be great for most everyday/typical situations. The VL300 is a bit overkill and I use it mainly when doing big sets or product video. You might consider getting at least one VL light, maybe the 150 or 200 and then as many UL150's as you like. Because the UL150 doesnt come with a case or remote, while the VL series does. :D
One annoyance of the VL series is that you cannot go below 10% with the remote. Actually you show this at 5:47 but don't talk about it. Also when you use the remote to turn it back on it jumps to 10% if it was below, very annoying. The SL150 II does not have this problem for example.
Yeah, that's the problem with generic remotes
"nothing jiggles" haaa!
:p
why nobody test this strong light outside, that the purpose of this light, i found just one youtuber testing vl 200 in the forest and thats it.
It needs power to run, so that leaves a generator or batteries, of which I have neither.... so that's why I didn't. :D Maybe I can in the future
Instead of buying Aputure 300d mk2; buy VL300 and some 60W godox light for fine control AND you have two lights and the ability to get a very dim setting. Duh.
For sure, sometimes the same amount of money can get you more without sacrificing too much quality
@@FellowFilmmaker Also buying some strong ND gel. Throwing out some ideas for people who think the Earth will split in two if they can't dim the light further.
I tried to give you some money via Patreon but you have a $10 minimum. I give $2 to the channels I support. I know it is not much, but I am retired and I want to support many channels. Not just two or three. Alas, your $10 minimum means I can not give you my small contribution. BTW, $10 is more than minimum wage in many parts of the country.
Well thanks for thinking of me! I went ahead and added a lower tier if you were interested in simply supporting the channel.
