In nearly all of these, he is playing like an amateur going hard with 2nd pair against people who had strong bets pre-flop. He is playing horrible, losing poker getting taken out by people who have better hands.

    • Pre flop raises only works so long. Soon people are going to take chances to play a hand. That's exactly what he wants also, he's just mad it backfired. It is always gonna backfire. It's not a 100% win strategy and people who employ it correctly still play careful enough to stay in the long game. Phil isn't great

    • it can be, some times people will stick around for a lucky draw. For example if you get a flush on the flop, but do not have a strong high card you can can try to scare off anyone who only has one of the suit but would otherwise hope to make one on the last 2 cards.

    • @@chiefcheeser if its only a few people sure but if there 5 people staying in despite high flush potential on the flop, they have hope of getting something that can beat it, and while each person has low odds of making a strong hand together they are a threat to your flush. And if they go for it anyways and fail your winnings might be bigger than if you bet when they are at the river and less willing to gamble on the final card.

  • As someone who just started to play a year ago, I watch these clips and keep thinking, “These guys are literally making standard plays. Why does Helmuth keep blowing up.” Then I keep realizing that this was all new school stuff to them. Old school players didn’t understand how to actually play poker. It wasn’t just waiting for premium hands. Position became a big part of play at this time.

    • You can play 1,000 but you will only win with an all round understanding of the game, making key folds, sensing weakness, tells etc. Phil has been winning for years and years because he can play he struggles with variance, which is more present in new players and large field tourneys.

    • Game is not mostly luck. But of course luck does play a factor especially on a small sample size.. For skilled top players over the course of a tournament... it is 55% skill and 45% luck.
