Termite Bombs
When it comes to teamwork, termites unite like no other. Scientists found a species of termites in the French Guiana rain forests that make use of their older worker bugs in an, er, unique way-- by sending them on suicide missions. These older bugs are chock full of toxic crystals that they accumulated over a lifetime. When these crystals are mixed with their saliva, it creates a liquid so toxic that it literally explodes on their enemies.
This noxious substance immediately can paralyze any fearsome foe the little termite comes across. However, the worker bugs die in the midst of this mass attack. Older bugs are not really too effective at foraging and nest maintenance as the younger ones. This self-destructive defense behavior actually has a name, it’s called Autothysis! Who would’ve known mother nature was so cruel, yet so smart?
Blood Squirting Lizards
The Texan Horned Lizard is as scary as it gets. It actually looks like a demon from hell hiding in a lizard’s skin. With its spiky and sharp demeanor, you would think nothing could come near it, yet it still has predators. But to step up its defense game, the lizard has a blood-curdling method. When a predator gets too near it, it straight up shoots streams of blood right through its eyes!
This stream of blood can go as far as 5 feet! It’s not just blood in the mixture, though. There's also a foul-tasting chemical mixed in with the blood to ward off predators. However, losing this much blood isn’t easy. The lizard has to block off major veins to collect and release about one-third of its total blood supply!
