Woodturning - Maple with sumac branches in brass shavings.
In this video, I take a bowl that most woodturners would through in the trash and turn it into a family heirloom. As always please follow all safety precautions and always wear a face shield!

Viewers can learn so much more from you than woodturning. I once had a teacher when I was in college who told us that if we learned everything about one thing, we’d learn all there is to know. I can’t thank you enough.
Thank you very much!
Hi, I don't do woodwook myself. But I love watching the way you can take a piece of wood and turn it into something so fantastic. You are amazing.
Thank you very much!
That black makes the bowl pop! And the inlay is outstanding.
Thanks 😊
Jim, you knoted it out the park, looking at what you started with and to the end,man your a wood Ninja love your work brother !!!!
Thanks 🥷🏻 lol 🙏🏻
Shinny is my choice and I love the way it brings the bowl alive. Makes it like satin .
Thanks 😊
This bowl shines like a wooden diamond 💎
Thanks 😊
I just love this piece!! Just plain old wood.
Sure is, lol. Thanks for watching!
burning the rim just looks so amazing and the result is just astonishingly beautiful
Thanks!
What a beautiful bowl with a really nice inlay and a burnt edge it's cool. The wood is really lovely it's got some nice grain and the finish is awesome well done Jim. Amanda x
Thanks 😊
The burnt edge frames the bowl, making the maple pop. Such a neat idea and beautiful piece
Thanks 😊
Nice piece. I can’t make a fire no more as all my scraps need to be made into something. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and techniques.
Thanks for watching!
It’s really interesting to be starting out watching your latest resin bowls, and now going back to your inlay “roots” to see where you came from. Love this burned edge! I’ve never even heard of doing that before, and the effect is fabulous! Very cool!
Thanks for watching!
Look at the beauty this bowl has that you use natural material and natural techniques to make it
Thanks 😊
I have to laugh at myself. I find that I hold my breath when you spray the accelerator so that I don't inhale the fumes!
Lol, thanks for watching
ONCE AGAIN YOU GOT ME WITH YOUR WORKMEN SHIP. FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS ITEM AND ONCE AGAIN I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE THING YOU MAKE BUT YOU ARE GREAT AND THEY ARE LOVELY. THANK FOR THE SHOW
Thanks for watching, and I sent you an email, Jim
U have an eye for art and a skill for it too. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
I love the resin projects. One of the reasons I first started watching. But damned if this isn't awesome!
Thanks 🙏
I was skeptical about the burnt edge but came out amazing as usual. Such a lovely piece!
Thank you very much
Gorgeous bowl. I like the brass and branches inlay. Classy looking
Thanks Judith!
Interesting and beautiful piece from your pre-resin days. I enjoy going back through some of your older work.
Thank you very much!
Jim, I couldn't bare to see salad tossed in that beautiful work of SpagueArt. It's an offence deserving of "hot" tar and feathering! Hell yeah you should sign your work! All true Artists do. As always, thanks for letting me and all of us visit you and your shop. Hey, don't vacuum up that shop floor. It's what makes me feel right at home! ;-)) Wakodahatchee Chris
Lol, thanks. I prefer to make food safe items, but in reality they probably never see food! Jim
Hi. Just a Word to say how much I learn and get inspired by your videos. Thanks
Awesome, thanks for watching.
wow very different. I hadn't seen inlay done until your channel. I really love the contrast of the light timber with the brass and the burnt edge. Just stunning
Thanks for watching
Frog bowl!! Love it .
Frog bowl???
Beautiful bowl! Another amazing job!!❤
Thanks again!
What a Brilliant combination! You Put the shavings on paper, you can roll it into a funnel for quickly filling spots and a second one on your Matt will catch the loose shavings, you can again bend it to a funnel to place back into the jar to be used again later, it’s great with glitter or any of those fine mediums that you have to buy, “waste not want not”
Thanks, I always try to reuse all my inlay material, so of it can be quite expensive.
That fruit bowl turned out really beautiful, less is more! The brass shavings look cool! I thought that they wouldn’t be detectable, NOT! You can truly see it shine! Great job!
Thank you very much!
Wow, that looks amazing! I actually thought you painted or laminated the edge of the bowl! I was shocked when you said, "Okay, lets get the torch and burn it!" 🤣 Definitely the last thing I thought I'd hear after all that work on a wood project! I love the natural edge of the bowl. It's really cool! I like that you don't cut them down to make it even. It makes for a much more interesting piece! It does have less holding capacity tho, so it's good you do both.
Thanks so much! 😊
With the brass it looks steampunky. I like it.
I’m with you, lol. Thanks
Beautiful as always! Nice pile of shavings in the background
There never seem to be any shortage of them, thanks
Great. 40 plus years of bowl making and I keep learning new ideas. thanks
Thanks!
Shiny is my thing too and I love this bowl.
Thank you very much!
You are brilliant! Great steady hands. And A+ for creativity!
Thanks 😊
I have been watching so many videos from start to finish, and I have learned so much! Not only a great artist but a great teacher.
Thank you very much!
That's another beautiful bowl! The finished shape is very artistic, and the burnt black edges go well with the end result. And so with the inlays, it's quite attractive. This is another number 1 for me. Wow! Thank you! 👍🏻🤗💕🇺🇸
Wow, I really appreciate it! Thanks 😊
Simply beautiful Jim
Thanks 🙏
Well done, beautiful bowl, excellent vidéo. Inspiring. Darragh, France.
Thank you very much!
Love the burnt rim . Thanks .
It’s a good way to get away from toxic inks, thanks
The inlay on the inside of that bowl looks like a sunflower
Totally, thanks 🙏🏻
Looking back at older videos. Still as impressive as current ones. Very well done and your video production is outstanding. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Wayne, I’ve learned a lot during this process that’s for sure and thanks for watching!
It is a beauty. I was wondering about the wavy, burnt edges but they are very interesting. Nice work. Nice bowl.
Thank you very much!
Well done!! Color composition is great!!
Thanks 🙏
Wow your toolwork is impressive!
Thank you very much!
Hi Jim, its defintely a beauty, wow, it reminds me to the paintings of Gustav Klimt. Last winter i started to fill a cracked bowl with cherry branches and soapstone powder and another one with maple branches and crushed malachite. You are a great teacher . Now I will try brass shavings. Thank you for giving us such impressing examples! Cheers Stefan
Wonderful, thanks!
If you think hard...that's your first photograph 😂.
Thanks
I haven't been through your entire video library yet, but have you considered doing some bowls, platters and vases in the shou sugi ban wood burning method? I think it would definitely be interesting if you combined the burnt wood, inlays and resin along with having warped rims. Turned out fantastic!
I did it on this video. Thanks kzhead.info/sun/bJqBf7KPsKB6ink/bejne.html
Oh yeah. I love it. I love everything about your work. Forget about resin, and PLEASE make it shiny! Just love it!
Thanks!

Such a cool idea
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful bowl, Jim. Love the effect of the branches and brass shavings, everything ties in perfectly. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thanks Tom!
Great job. Thanks
Thanks 🙏
Excellent piece Jim. I’m loving your videos. With the exception of Captain Eddy Castelin I find that most videos really are “watch how I do this” without providing sufficient details. With your videos you provide excellent info and instructions on how you go about with your craft as well as providing the pitfalls based on your experience. I’ve watched three of your videos since discovering your channel earlier today. I’ve learned something from each one. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the following days. For now, I’m wishing you continued success.
Awesome! Thanks. I’ve also notice the same thing with a lot of videos on here. I don’t know if you watch Kim Tippin’s channel but she called me the other day and said that I’m the only person on here doing natural inlays too. I was a little shocked by this and I think she’s right. Stay safe, Jim.
Wow this one is exquisite..I love the black around the rim and the inlay looks like a fantasy flower !it even has a stem..This has been made out of a beautiful piece of wood..Defiantly one of my favourites 😀
Thanks Christine!

Wow! That is really awesome brother!!
Thanks.
That is gorgeous Jim. Thanks for sharing all your tips & tricks. I’ll have a ‘go’ at doing this one of these days!
