I am a hyperpolyglot gigachad alpha male who speaks over 50 languages fluently. In this video, I discuss why I quit Russian and Arabic. This is a hard video to make, but it is important that aspiring polyglots understand my struggle.

    • That is very different though if you're referring to sub-Saharan languages, bantu languages are all extremely closely related, if you were to learn Zulu for example, then travel north and try to communicate with the Shona, there would be a few differences but you would be able to understand eachother pretty easily without any prior education on or exposure to eachother's language. Most of the bantu expansion into southern Africa was actually a lot more recent than most people think and so the languages tend to be much more recently removed from eachother, like Dutch and Afrikaans now, or Dutch and English 2000 years ago.

    • Besides, Arabic is not even close to being a pretty language, why would someone fėrce oneself to learn it is beyond me, it only has a few pretty words - and Russian is not that bæd, but it’s kinda meh, and Slovene is way better because Slovene is the prettiest Slavic language with mostly pretty words and only a few non-pretty words that can easily be modified and turned into a pretty word, so one should be learning Slovene instead, which is way easier and very pretty with mostly pretty words that bring joy to the eye!

    • Dutch and English are the prettiest and most refined languages ever with the most pretty and poetic words, and Norwegian and Icelandic and Danish and Old Norse and Welsh and Breton also come real close, and all other Germanic languages and the other 4 Celtic languages are also super gorgeous - if one wants to learn a harder language, Irish and Scottish Gaelic are a great option because they are very pretty with mostly pretty words and they are the hardest pretty languages, so they are very challenging because of the spelling with many vowels and diphthongs etc, but still not impossible, and they are category 3 languages!

Just getting to the point of being able to read and understand a third of what's written feels good enough, and I learn a bit of different Latin languages every day (and mostly upping my Spanish to B2). I also work as a translator and planning soon to open a language canter (English and Arabic). I'd love to help you in Palestinian Arabic if you'd like, I think I'm pretty good at explaining things logically, and not just in languages. Keep up the good work:)

  • I love your work. Terrific videos, man! Regarding amblyopia with exophoria (lazy eye drifting out). Without treatment, the problem will only get worse, more frustrating, annoying, and aggravating, with time. That's not your fault. It's the simple nature of the problem. The point is, the sooner you get treatment, the sooner you will thank yourself. Your fear of surgery is natural and understandable. Our eyes are special. However, I'm afraid you're overthinking it. This is one of the safest procedures you will ever have. And for you, one of the most important in improving your quality of life. The problem is that, because the brain is not receiving enough good information from the amblyopic right eye, it tends to ignore it, and the lateral rectus muscle tends to pull the eye off to the side. The procedure recesses and weakens the lateral rectus muscle, and shortens and strengthens the opposing medial rectus muscle, so you don't have to fight so hard to keep the right eye straight. It's not a cure, but it helps. A lot. Find someone who has done many many of these procedures, then put your faith in that person's experience and skills. Faith is something our current culture has led us to avoid. However, in this situation beyond your control, use faith as your tool to get through this. Replace the focus on risks and fears, by visualizing instead a better life after you've had this done. You are an incredibly strong person. Look at everything you have accompllished with languages, which are hard. You can succeed at this, too. Best wishes.

But honestly, you already have gotten to the right mindset to get you through it: the wall doesn't go on forever, just find another way around. Learning braille and focusing on audio content is fantastic. I think the Discord could pull through on other things that may be easier on your eyes for production: like meme reviews, maybe non-American music suggestions for you to give reactions to, and cartoons/children's programming could also be interesting to compare across languages and easier on the eyes.

It sucks since it's something I love and am passionate about, but I have to weigh my passion against my long term health. I don't want to make things worse by over-exerting myself. Audio is definitely still an option for your language learning, definitely take advantage of that. And if you go for the surgery, I hope it all goes well and you heal up quickly. I'm pretty sure that there is a ton of apps/scripts/websites/chatbots that can provide this service already. Ffs, in the worst case scenario you can just switch to another language. I mean Polish is just Russian written in Latin and Maltese is the same thing just for Arabic.

  • even my mother language is Arabic and i'm studying it to get my phd. i still experience difficulties in grammar and vocabulary , especially when I read Arabic poetry and literature or even the Quran . I learnt English in less than 2 years I haven't master the english yet but I reach to decent level and now I'm studying Spanish too . I find both languages are relatively easy. But my native language is still hard to me 😂 Literally everyday I learn new words and stuff in my own language. Everyday I ask myself how our ancestors mange to master the Arabic to a level that phd student cant reach it. So Dont lose hope in learning Arabic 😂

  • Hey! I have the exact same eye problem, except that while your lazy eye explores the world, my lazy eye wanders to the inside of my nose. After focusing too much, my lazy eye gives me a really bad headache, which is a shame because I love to read. I alternate between normal books and audiobooks, which helps a lot. Currently, I am learning Mandarin Chinese, and I find that making the text larger (when reading on a screen) helps a bit in not focusing too much. But yeah, we can get through this! (that surgery scares the hell out of me too)

  • Yo, I do have the same eye problem but my right eye has so little vision it doesn’t impact my reading, or give me headaches or anything. I did get that surgery though and know people who also did and it was absolutely fine. I’d say it’s something worth doing especially if it’s impacting your life!

  • Didn't expect the answer to be serious but hey, sometimes we need to take a break from things. I finally got my study routine to be pretty consistent, but for a while studying Japanese would give me so many headaches since my personal life was also stressing me out. Taking a few months away did set me back a little bit but I'm now at a point where I can study without feeling like my head is about to explode from my eyes hurting. And the lack of stress also seems to help me remember what I'm learning better.

  • 5:58 I think you completely mixed up Russian cases. Anyway, I think your decision to learn Russian by audio is a good one. Also is good to immerse in a culture of the language you are learning, best is to live in that country. I was learning German in the school since the 4th grade and by the 11th grade i still couldn't understand a thing. But after I moved from Russia to Germany I learnt this language in a couple of months to a very moderate level where I could freely express myself. Also a good method is to learn by listening to music, trying to understand it (with the help of vocabulary etc) and then trying to sing it.

  • I resonate with your problem on a whole another level, man. I’m half-Bulgarian and half-Palestinian and can barely speak Arabic, but try to speak as much as I can. I also have a lazy eye and that was a problem with me reading books when I was little. There was the pain which you explained, but I never even thought it affected me so much with reading and focusing. I now speak German as well, but man is it hard to concentrate! No worries LanguageSimp, you are not alone.

  • yeah I actually have that same eye issue and need a different prescription in my eyes, like -2 in one and +2 in the other. (The lazy one is the +2 one). My doctor suggested the same surgery but he also said I might have to do more than one surgery since it might still end up drifting in the future. It's really difficult to focus on something for too long, especially a computer screen. I get these cluster headaches where it feels like I'm getting stabbed in my lazy eye. I did try eye patching too, but I patch up the good eye when I do because that gave more relief than covering the bad eye

  • My ex got the surgery and she was coooooked for abt 2 days. Basically just gotta put these lil eye drops in every few hours for a week or so. After about 3-4 days she could take off the eyepatch and see just v blurry, then about a week everything was good and it helped a ton with her migraines. It did end up meaning a new glasses prescription down the line but overall seemed v worth it. It’s also worth mentioning ts was outrageously expensive.
