#74 A Look into the Future

Lot's of things going on at the moment. I'm having some help levelling the soil around the cabins and taking the middle roof off. I received some renderings from an architect to show the plans for the cabin. In the meantime I'm making progress raising the walls on the inside of the cabin and a start is being made with the windows.

You are making a very special place to live where you can lose yourself in the beauty of it all. Thank you for letting us share with you what you are creating as it becomes what you want it to be.

    • Yes, we can all live this way. Most of our ancestors did, and likely not more than s few generations ago. It ain't to late to tell the 15 minute, high tech 'smart' (etymologically means 'painful'- think about that one...) Cities to get lost. We can still reclaim the commons given to us by YAH Most High.

I've been wondering what was the plan for that crucial bit of infrastructure! Now we can see! The renderings of what the homestead might look like are fantastic! This is the best KZhead channel! Every episode is a cherished gift. Thanks Martijn!

  • What a lovely view into the future. The only thing I’d change is in the small cottage bedroom. When you place the toilet back on the same wall as the headboard, you could create a narrow wall to make sure the toilet is not visible from the bed, it just feels a tad weird to see the toilet so open in the room. That way you still have the open plan, but with a wee bit privacy when sitting on the toilet (even with everything in front of you is wide open when sitting on the toilet). Maybe it’s a girl’s thing… Love the progress and your ideas 💡 It makes me want to make ve to Italy 😅

• The cow bells are such a delightful sound. I love that the cows graze on your land. The cabin is coming along and the door looks perfect - solid and strong and will keep whistling wind out.

    @trudiegordon6327@trudiegordon632710 ай бұрын
    • Really? There is evidence to suggest that cow bells can be cruel to cows. Cow bells can be quite loud, up to 113 decibels, which is about as loud as a lawnmower. This noise can be stressful and even painful for cows, who have much more sensitive hearing than humans. Additionally, the weight of the bell can put strain on the cow's neck and shoulders. A study published in 2015 found that cows wearing bells for three days spent less time feeding, ruminating, and lying down. These are all important behaviors for cow health and well-being. The study also found that cows wearing bells had higher heart rates and blood pressure, which are signs of stress. Animal rights groups have called for a ban on cow bells.

    • While I like the cowbells, I'm not forced to listen to them 24/7. I've wondered if the bell noise is annoying to the cows. Imagine never being able to enjoy the quiet of nature because every move you & your herd make shatters that quiet.

    • @@priscilla2152 they wear bells so that the owner can find them if they get lost or move too far away from the others. Which is why I find it quite disturbing if they bells when they are kept between gates where they can't run away. I had quite a few times cows in front of my house and at night there was no way to sleep as they were gathering just under my window and they constantly move so there is no minute of silence. I already thought of spraying some construction foam in their bells. I only can imagine how stressful it must be for them. 😞

    • I just cannot emphasise enough how much toilets need to be separated! Even if just a frosted glass wall. You can definitely be creative in making the right partition so the room does not feel diminished. But you cannot have your toilet continuous with the bedroom which leads to the staircase to the upstairs all open! It is not conducive to ever receiving guests if they have to go to the other house every time they need the loo. Imagine at some point in time you have someone to share your bed. No one ever imagines romantic bed and fireside poops with a lover….!

    • That's an idea - or just a moveable screen in front of the toilet. You know, a lightweight foldable screen made out of a wood frame with fabric stretched within the frame.( Kinda like how women would dress behind one in the western movies.) At times you could easily move that 'screen' near the big window while showering, etc. Multiple uses.

And if you are willing to go where the art takes you, the end result may not look like what you had in your mind. The outcome, the majority of the time, can be even more beautiful. That is what I see with your home. Your home is a piece of art. We are all pieces of art in becoming. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Your attention to detail is wonderful to see. The skylight in the cottage was a genius decision. I like that through this project you connect with so many other artisans, builders, and crafts people, learning and benefitting from their expertise, but also giving them a space to showcase their skills. • Hey Martijn! Been watching from the start and really love the channel and how you have created an outdoor lifestyle as you renovate the property. I am a residential remodeler here in the States so can appreciate the enormous amount of work entailed in rebuilding stone structures from scratch! I do some masonry in my work, but having every single surface seemingly made of stone (except your temp structures/ coop) is incredible! I'm writing now because I just watched you take us through the renderings and I think you have got it spot on for the property!!! When you were pouring the floor I thought the shower pan meant the door was being filled in, but now I see the whole finished layout and it is exactly right. As we say in the business, it always gets uglier before its amazing, so keep going and enjoy the ride! There is no better purpose in life than methodically fulfilling a dream.... you inspire!

  • Of all my favorite things from this video I most enjoyed watching Martijn walk around his land with a bucket picking up small stones for the walls. Think about it. His land, how it continues to give.

At the end of the day, you went to a nice place, lend a hand, sweat a bit and had a good time. Not a wasted day at all. You took a trip for fun and came back feeling good about yourself.😊

  • I am a HUGE fan of your weekly vlogs. Can't speak enough about your journey. I tell folks about you all the time. If you are considering getting a horse, you will probably need a bigger vehicle and a horse trailer for veterinary visits unless the veterinarians there make house calls. Goats might be cool, too. With all the stone lying around, you should consider building yourself a pizza oven somewhere there near your kitchen area for Fall, Spring/Summer months. As a woman, and a pretty private person, I would definitely enclose the toilet area. Not very appealing to have a toilet bowl in the bedroom (but then again, it's YOUR house, not mine LOL) The renderings are GORGEOUS!!! Loving the terraces and outdoor areas they mapped out. Continue to be safe during your labors and take care! Thanks for the content!

My apartment was small too, built in 1888, and the toilet was in the middle, not far from the front door but also next to the biggest window in the place and I didn't want to lose the light by boxing it in. Was kind of nuts but I built a low wall around it with an aquarium on the top part, so it felt light and airy, and you could watch the fish while you sit on the pot.

How nice it must be to see the excavating and earth moving going so quickly, with the help of this week's volunteers. And the rendering of what your place could look like in the future is stunning! The terraces make it look so comfortable, like it's been that way since the cabins were first built. The men who first built them must be watching over you with hearty approval. And with the professional work on the windows, it looks like you might get to spend this coming winter in the cabin. I thought they had some advanced time-photography and those pictures they sent you were actually from the future! So well done and realistic. I only hope I have enough years left to me so that I can see them come to fruition for you.
