Lyrics:
And another one bites the dust
Oh why can I not conquer love?
And I might have thought that we were one
Wanted to fight this war without weapons
Well, I've got thick skin and an elastic heart,
But your blade - it mightbe too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard,
Yeah, I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got an elastic heart
Yeah, I've got an elastic heart

  • the part where maddie tries to get shia out of the cage but he can't get out reminds me of those moments when you are trying to get someone out of something like depression or anorexia or a disorder like that, and just like maddie ran out, it looks so easy to just leave it, but for some people it's difficult to get out of the cage, like something pulls you back, you are afraid of what people will say, or you are just to attached to it. then people trying to desperately pull you out but you can't no matter how you try and im crying help

  • ''Shia & Maddie are both representing the heart. Maddie is the strong representation of the heart. She's representing how naive and innocent yet strong the heart is. She's young which shows she hasn't fully experienced heartache. She's a fighter. Shia is representing how guarded and damaged the heart is. The cage is there to symbolize a barrier which is protecting the heart from heartache. Because Maddie hasn't experienced it she has no problem leaving the cage and teasing Sia about it, but after feeling bad she steps back in. Sia seems to try desperately to get her back in the cage because he knows the pain of heartache. It's like they're both trying to teach each other. In the end, Maddie just doesn't understand and tries to pull the guarded Sia out, but he's just too scared. A tug of war. So the heart remains guarded unable to love because both sides of the heart need to leave in order to love. This video shows the hearts back and forth conflict within.''

Highlighted romance tectonics leave me reliving a preteen romance of which was tragically left behind me some 54 years ago when I was 11. The 14 year old sister of my 12 year old love had come in between us to sever our relationship. Sadly it had major repercussions in my life ahead of me because I had needed this, my first preteen relationship to succeed. Outside forces took it's toll. The one positively wonderful experience that I can take from this Elastic Heart Music Video, is that I can relate to many of the examples of what I went through as an eleven and twelve year old boy myself through the physical actions and motions and feelings of The Elastic heart music video of 2015. 😌😔😌~ ❤❤‍🔥❤🎠 M a y 21st 2024 🥲

  • Gosh I hate it when people think the man is sexually abusing the girl character. The girl is a younger, freer, happier version of the man/Sia (I don't know who it is representing). The man is heartbroke and hurt, caged up while the girl is trying to free the man from the cage (his fears, heartbreak, and sorrow), but the man won't let go because (I think) he fears he will get heartbroken/hurt again. Thus, the song being called "Elastic Heart".

    • It's rather easy to see it as a father-daughter relationship, though. It appears as a story about a little girl who is growing up and her father reluctantly realizing his little princess is becoming a woman.

    • Legion Ivory Yes, but Sia herself even said it in a video, and a social media. She said that she was sorry people thought it was a pedophile music video, and then said that she meant it to be a video about her heartbreak and younger version of herself (the version I explained). 🙃🙃🙃

He was physically and emotionally abusive, but at times he would be super loving and caring. I never knew which version of him I would get. I always wanted to find a way to reach him but realized I couldn't. This is the one song that really sums up our relationship.

  • Im probably wrong, but i think it is about a little girl and her father. the girl is born and the father does not know how to handle/help this girl grow up and raise her. he soon learns to play and have fun with her, they care for each other very much, until the daughter is ready to grow up, but is not ready for her father to leave, so when she leaves the cage (her childhood) she wants her father to come with her, but he cant as the girl must live life on her own and make her own choices,

    • I don't think so, music videos like movies usually take lots of takes to film only some seconds, that could be exahusting, I'm not saying they didn't enjoy it but it was definitelly not as emotional as you see in the video were they put all shots toghether with the music. The 5 minutes you are seeing probably took like at least 8 hours to film, not to mention that they practiced it a lot o times before filming it

      @soulofexistence@soulofexistence5 жыл бұрын
    • Quinjao: Yes, it probably took hours to film, which makes it all the more difficult for the actors/dancers to film. There’s definitely, without a doubt, an emotional component from shia and maddie.

  • Just to clear this up cause it drives me crazy when people assume the worst: according to Sia herself, in this video, Maddie and Shia both represent different parts of Sia. Maddie is the younger, free version of herself that is naive, bright and hopeful while Shia plays the jaded half. The half that has had all his hopes and dreams shattered by heartbreak. The song is about the internal struggle, between wanting to give up on love after heartbreak and getting back up and being hopeful about it again. The way Shia looks at Maddie longingly at 2:00 and 2:19 represents that even in heartbreak, you still long for what was. The way shes aggressive, then tries to physically fix him and then shes kind as she tries to help him out of his cage so he/Sia can love again. Thus, the elastic heart title.

Like I'm not exactly a model of mental health, but I have given up trying to have the same grip on reality as everyone else, because their grip is too slippery for me, no shade on those that can use the hand holds I can't. I'm an autistic trans woman, my reality is only tangentially related to neurotypical cis people's. I have a heavy gendered read on this video that most likely isn't part of Sia's design, but once you release art it is somewhat out of your hands.

  • To me, this video has always represented a struggle with addiction, with Shia as the addict and Maddie personifying the addictive substance. He oscillates between hating it, trying to avoid it, then looking for comfort from it. Ultimately he succumbs to the temptation and it wipes out his world entirely. I think of an “elastic heart” as one that can feel a whole range of emotions for an addiction that’s slowly killing them.

  • Poor little girl. To think the corruption and neglect she was going through. Trust no one. Yah she got that right. "And I want it, I want my life so bad, i'm doing everything I can". That one hits hard. The bit with the innocent more positive moment of playing with eachothers faces, and the end bit of separating from each other, and her being so mature, because she knows she has to focus on her tough life, rather than have the freedom to and be able to have time for love. That always made me cry.

  • I've seen this video several times (I love the song), and today I watched this video with my son (he's 6), and he said, "Mom, why can't she get the dad out?" My 6yr old saw this video for what it was, and a bunch of grown adults try to turn it into something sexual. I'm not sure if that's sad, or disturbing, or a little bit of both. I think it's a beautiful song and the video was well done.

  • For me, this shows a father-daughter relationship for sure. I think the little girl is struggling with some mental problem, most likely depression, and then the father is forever trying to talk to her and connect with her but she keeps pushing him away, occasionally he gets some control back over her but eventually she kills herself (at 2:54 when she leaves the cage) and him carrying her around is the funeral and then at the end he is struggling to completely let her go.

    • I think it was already explained somewhere that it is two pieces of Sia's personality. The younger being the wild imagination, the older being reality. The imagination is free and unpredictable and wants to be free, but reality can't escape. That being said, yes, it is easy to see how this could be sort of father daughter, and therefore bring out new emotions.

      @TheDragonsRose@TheDragonsRose9 жыл бұрын
    • Wow people like to jump to the darkest conclusions. Sounds like you might have your own daddy issues if suicide is your first off-handed conclusion (not trying to be a jerk but you should talk to someone about that if you don't already, much Love). I see the cage as a metaphor for addiction or depression. The first part the father is doing his best to raise his wild child (who is free of addiction though she's raised in its confines). Then she eventually rejects him and leaves, as children do, and he's left to his cage and the memory of her (carrying her around on his back). Finally she tries to come back and help him escape, but he's trapped good.

  • I agree with most of the comments about the meaning of this video, but here's my take: I see a man, fighting, but with the feeling of a game. She can break free from others judgement (the cage) but he can't: he's grown up, he can't play anymore, he's confined in the standards for a grown man. Bet he's truly happy only when she's around and they can play and move in their space. And that's why he climbs up to the top of the cage, to put his head in the hole and watch the world from the outside, like he used to when he was young. Just my way to see this video. Great acting and coreography.

    • I like this interpretation because I relate to it, and maybe that's all it comes down too. I'm not a man but I understand when society views you as an adult you can't do fun things anymore, you can't mess up or need help, and you can't really be yourself without cages of judgment and responsibility. It kills our souls, no matter what gender/race/class or age we are.

  • I totally see this as a father/daughter interpretive dance. If you look you can see the progression. She's out of control. He doesn't know what to do, he scared. She manipulates her niceness, he relaxes, she bites the hand that feeds, he starts to fight back, he gives up she comes back-i love you but everything is upside down dad and finally she wants him to go with her but hes trapped and cant follow her path. Totally nails it. Amazing. And finally Shia looks like a grown up.

Both Maddie AND Shia pulled off a perfect performance. When Maddie pulls out of the cage, chills. The self has moved on, ready to grow, while the beast screams. Chills every time.

  • I thought this made sense if you think of Shia as a father and Maddie as his daughter. They feel trapped in a cage together, trying to figure each other out. The father not knowing what to do. Them fighting and yelling, with occasional moments of peace. Until she is able to get loose from the cage, away from him. He feels trapped, she feels sympathy, and so they're finally able to connect when she comes back. But when she moves into adulthood, try though she might, she can't take him with her back out of the cage. She gets the independence she once craved but it's not the same anymore. Idk, just my take.

  • I want every single person who watches this video and finds it offensive to actually stop and think the following: 1. Why are you offended? Is it because it's an older man and a younger girl? 2. If so, would you feel the same if both were women? 3. Why do people scream paedophelia about this song? 4. Why do you feel it's sexualised? If you really still feel offended by this, think it kiddy porn, actually stop and look at yourself for a long moment. Why are you assuming it so? Because they're the opposite sex, dancing together, with an age gap? If they were related, would you still care so much? Actually be honest with yourselves. Because if you do find it offensive, maybe it's time to look inward at yourself. You may not like what you see, but at least you'd know why you're "offended". Seriously. It sickens me, the shit this video gets.

The dancing around together and fighting might symbolize how negative and positive feelings are together 'in her heart' at the same time and constantly fight for dominance. In the end when the girl (or good side) got out of the cage but the guy (or bad side) couldn't it could symbolize that she lets out her 'good side' and cages in her 'bad side'. {By bad side and Good side i mean impulses to do good or bad things, etc.}

  • People who take away anything sexual from this video do not understand any part of this at all. For starters, the song never states what kind of love it's talking about in the lyrics. Of course it could be a lover kind of thing, but it could also be family love. That is the side this video shows, a struggling relationship between a father and child. It's heartbreaking, emotional, and very vulnerable. It's a beautiful and well done piece, and it's so sad that so many people can't recognize what a fantastic and well thought out piece of art this is. Especially the end, that is so damn powerful. Maddie is a beautiful dancer, and Shia captured the father character so well. They both did a fantastic job, and if you can't see past what they're wearing that's so sad. Not to mention there really isn't anything inappropriate about it. It's traditional dance wear. It's the most basic kind of dancers outfit. That's the point. It's not sexual, and you should not see it that way. It's a symbol of vulnerability. I truly feel bad for people that can't see this video for what it is, because it's so stunning and powerful.

    • I don't think that the clothes really symbolize traditional dance clothing. It think it's because the lack of clothing shows vulnerability. That's why in Chandelier, Maddie wears the same outfit. Shia represents her father, and because of his mental illness he is vulnerable (reason why he wears similar clothing ), and Maddie wears the clothes because it represents Sia as a child and her being vulnerable and in that environment ultimately could have led her into indulging herself in an addiction.

Now I have basically no heart and thick sking... this song however is like a knife to my heart

  • The best analogy of this vid that I heard was that the cage was a symbol for the adult world and that the dad was trying to keep his daughter there and stop her going wild. Then she goes back in to try and teach him how to be a kid and when he finally realises that he wants out, the cage has gotten too small so he is stuck in the adult world forever. The cage was a symbol of suppressing your wild side and creativity - sort of a metaphor for real life. When you are stuck in the cage for all your life it is really hard, almost impossible to get out. Just one way for looking at it. Shame on those people who say this is pedophilia, it is a beautiful dance with nothing sexual implied at all.

  • This song and this video always make me cry. Maddie and Shia and this dance. The expressionism, like you can feel the pain in the dance and the acting just gets to me. It gets to me not only because it reminds me of being trapped in my depression and my addiction and the people who dont understand trying desperately to pull me out not knowing I would walk out of that cage myself if i could. That I would never choose to be trapped the way that I am and the hurt I feel fighting it every single day. It also gets to me because of knowing thebpain and pressure Maddie Ziegler experienced growing up under the spotlight in ALDC. Even though she made her way and it gave her a lot of opportunities, I cant imagine what it must have felt like for her at times. It had to have been a heavy burden for such a young girl. So happy she's making her own way and doing what she wants to do with her life.
