So the Owlabs Spring is a thocky keyboard to start. But what happens if you take a set of Cerakey Ceramic Keycaps and put it on this? Well... it destroys the internets. Maybe tt doesn't. But you get some insane sounds out of it. Check it out!

    • I would think that your first concern is not that important considering that dropping keyboards happens almost never for most users. Fingers won't do any damage to ceramics no matter how hard you type. Ceramics are brittle, but still relatively very tough. Slamming or punching (very very hard) your keyboard could possibly shatter the keycaps, but that could easily be prevented. Just breathe, calm down, and don't punch or slam your keyboard

  • I placed an order for a set of these for a very special mechanical keyboard, my Abkoncore AR87. An incredibly special keyboard, weighing in at nearly 7 pounds of machined aluminum, deserves incredibly special keycaps. So rather than using my all-stainless steel keycap set. Which were OEM Profile and didn't quite fit the style as this keyboard was really designed to be used with Cherry Profile. I went ahead with this instead! I'm extremely excited to be one of the first with an all-ceramic keycap set in exclusive Crazed Blue. In addition to the other mods I've got planned like soldering LEDs to backlight the keycaps etc. It'll be about as custom as it can get and incredibly rare, a crown jewel of a keyboard as it were, that'll be durable enough to last forever and something special I hope to pass down someday. They let me know since they got over 4,000 orders, they plan to get them all manufactured and shipped by August-October of this year!! May the Thock be with you.

  • I bet they have some serious weight compared to plastics haha, but as someone who has worked with various ceramic types and coatings before, the glaze does seem quite smooth as you'd expect. I'm not sure I'd like that personally, especially if your hand gets too dry or even remotely sweaty it'll be sliding all over the place, and conversely if your fingers stick to them then that doesn't help with ease of movement either. Definitely sounds good in this board regardless. Are the undersides uncoated and if so, does it have any texture? The legend versions look promising and I'm wondering how they achieve that and if it's clear-coated (the site says they use decals, likely under clear coat, which is neat technically speaking). I am looking forward to more types/styles since there are many kinds of ceramics :) Cheers!

Love the video as always -- though I do miss the deeper dive into the "why" behind the sound. You've started to normalize certain terms with me -- like air vs. structure borne sound. I would guess in this build, the caps are far more impactful than the board, and so the sound stems more from the ceramic directly. (And thus ends my cheap imitation of keybored science.) Also, do you prefer Arisu style over split? I know you've got experience with both now.

  • Welcome back, Scott. Do the key caps make the force necessary to push the key down feel any heavier?

    @jimmyt9283@jimmyt92832 жыл бұрын
    • Great to be back! it does definitely add to the downward force. So you might want to consider that for the weight of the switches as well. For the standard keys, my 62g long springs feel more like 60g at most

  • I did message them about whether or not they'll make them in SA profile and said they'd consider it after the kickstarter has finished. I hope so, cuz I don't like cherry caps. That and SA ceramic keys would be nuts

    @jrmyzero@jrmyzero2 жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. SA ceramic caps sans legends would be super classy.

  • ive never seen pcb flex cuts like that ever! how does it feel to type on?

    @flix8_589@flix8_5892 жыл бұрын
    • It feels very nice and soft. Plus the heavy keycaps really do benefit from it where the cuts and the flexibility really helps to tamper the bottom out as well

      @Keybored@Keybored2 жыл бұрын
  • How heavy are the keycaps? Would it be possible to get key chatter with lighter spring weights? Should you go for a spring weight that's actually heavier than usual; for instance, if I like 60g weight springs, should I go with 62 or 65 with these keycaps? Also, would the return be slower? I have so many questions hahaha. Thanks for the video; the engineer in me loves your content!

    @MrElariv@MrElariv2 жыл бұрын
    • I'm actually using 62g long springs and they feel completely normal and fine. They caps are definitely noticeably heavier than abs or pbt. I can't tell the weights of each since my scale doesn't go that precise, but if you carry the entire set, you can def tell that it's about 50% or so heavier than a gmk set. For the spacebar (The 6.25) you def need like 80g or it won't return.

      @Keybored@Keybored2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Keybored That's interesting, specially for the spacebar. Thanks!

  • I can't imagine not having a legend on a keyboard. I can't just remember where certain symbols are, or exactly where a number is without looking. Also having no numpad seems like a waste, same for the other 9 function keys.
