Norwich City have been a surprise package in the Championship this season. With German coach Daniel Farke at the helm, Norwich have surpassed most pundits’ pre-season predictions of mid-table and impressed with their style of play.

  • As an Ipswich Town supporter it's hard for me to stomach how well the Canaries are doing, especially considering our current predicament. When we played at Portman Road early in the season there was little between the two clubs and it looked like it was going to be a difficult campaign for both clubs, since then we've sunk like a stone and Norwich have gone from strength to strength. The return fixture a couple of weeks ago highlighted that Norwich have real attacking potency and punish lapses in concentration and mistakes viciously. Huge credit to the way the club are giving their young players opportunities, Lewis, Aarons and Cantwell all look better prospects than Norwich have produced in a long while and from what I've heard there's more talent in reserve coming through. Something your video didn't touch on is Norwich's weakness playing out from the back at times. They have great footballing principles but they're not always as composed as they need to be to effectively play from the goalkeeper out. In the derby Ipswich's best opportunities came from Norwich trying to play it out from the back and playing themselves into trouble when Ipswich released a two or three man press, Krul and Godfrey were most guilty of this with Lewis getting caught a couple of times too. However when Norwich do find their rhythm out from the back they cut through teams with ease. All the best to Norwich for the rest of the season and beyond, for many years you lads have been in the ascendency in East Anglia. Regardless of how fleeting it was I feel fortunate to have witnessed European campaigns and a top 6 Premier League finish in my lifetime as an Ipswich Town supporter, I hope Norwich City supporters are fortunate enough to experience something similar over this period of dominance. If not you can still talk about that one time Jeremy Goss scored against Bayern... ;)

    • I have to agree with much of this. After a very awkward start to the season, as a Norwich fan I was looking at performances and thinking with the Portman Road fixture falling where it did, it would be Ipswich's best chance in some time to get that elusive derby win (although I did fail to take into account just how much trouble Ipswich were having under Hurst, but nevertheless both teams weren't good at that point). There are indeed a few more young talents coming through the system, which seems to be operating well at the moment. While the problem has at times come from trying to play the ball out from the back unsuccessfully, it is worth noting that this has been an increased problem in January, with the usually composed Timm Klose out injured and Moritz Leitner, who's been an excellent lynchpin in midfield, hurt too. Vrančić covers the latter role well but Godfrey has been a bit naïve at times. He's decent at playing the ball with his feet and coming forward with it, but he's inexperienced and his decision-making still needs some work. In fairness regarding that European campaign of the early 90s, that should have been either the 2nd or 3rd Norwich European campaign, but the ban on English teams in Europe in the 80s did prevent the team from competing until the shock 1992-3 season, but still I can't see them having achieved anything better than "that" Jeremy Goss goal in the era. I feel that at the Premier League level this Norwich team would need a couple of investments to mire itself mid-table because at the moment there is definitely a large amount of reliance on scoring more goals than the opposition, which produces incredibly entertaining football but has the risk of leaving the team exposed at the back against better quality attacks than you often find at the Championship. Ipswich's problem in the derby was the lack of a real goalscorer, and the best chances falling to the wrong individuals.

    • Norwich fan here. Thanks for that fair and nice comment. Sad to see your position. You're going down. But keep positive. Lambert got us out of league 1 in 1 season. So enjoy new grounds. New teams. And enjoy winning again. Best of luck for next season. We may be going up....let's see.

    • @@liambennett3917 There will be growing pains for Ipswich I suspect, I can't see us going down and winning week in week out like some supporters seem to be kidding themselves to ease the pain of relegation. I'm just hoping it means we go back to giving our young players more opportunities week in week out.

    • @@ofs82 Cheers for the context there regarding Klose's injury, etc. I have to say despite Godfrey getting caught out a few times I thought he looked very decent, reminded me of Adam Webster, although not as good a passing range as Webster has.

    • Agree coming from BVB II he has that mentality but gives youth a vhanve & sticks with them in title race. Aarons as been exceptional, Lewis too hasn't got as Mich praise & I really like Can't well & Godfrey has settled in well at CN too. Using the academy with some smart recruiting in Pukki, Leitners, & young Buendía who have all been excellent. And after they sold what most would say where their 2 best players last season in Maddison & Pritchard. Maddz def was. He has done well with mix of youth & experience. I think with Wagner who come from BVB II & was great for Huddersfield got them up playing good football on a budget but I'd argue Farke is better. But both have great personalities & shown it van be done without spending £50m like Newcastle or Wolves. But just bjr smart recruiting developing, coaching & tactics. So think we will see more Championship clubs go for managers of those ilk instead of the usually been around for decades

    • Yes parachute payments but that's not all the Championship clubs that's 3. Those who go down you would expect have the best chances of coming back up bc of the parachute payments & selling players who did well. But time & time again clubs get stuck look at Stoke & Swansea tho the owners really ruined Swansea. Newcastle came back up but spent £50m, Villa, Boro still trying to get up. Huge historical clubs like Leeds,Forest, Derby, etc trying to get up. But there are clubs like I put above who come in & do it on a budget. Wagner did Farke is doing it. That's why I think more will look a managers who can get best out of youth, work on budget develop coaching & tactics. Only WBA are up there & they kept most their squad which is very strong. Wilder is another he has done it in every league with top points from Northampton champions league 2 99 points to Sheffield Utd league 1 101 points. To top 6 last season & top spot sometimes with not an expensive squad. So yes some clubs have money others like Brentford lose their best players every window but stay in it. And £20m is a lot. Right club could do a lot with some pocket some blow it & really in this market its a class championship player or a Che Adams right now

Second season was one of stability - finishing 11th in the prem and recruiting players like Mattia Perin, Dani Olmo and Eddie Nketiah. Third season was successful. With Nketiah banging in 26 goals in 35 games, Perin guarding our goal, and Olmo being a flair and assist king; I finished 6th and got in the Europa League. Then my budget in the 4th season was too low (£20 mil) so I left and coincidentally joined Borussia Dortmund (where Farke and Wagner came from)

He also made some smart moves w Pukki now joint top goal scorer, Leitner & 'the Championship Messi' Buendía tho to me Wes holds the Irish Messi☺ But Buendía as been great very creative & will only get better. • Great video as per Tifo, I have one area for improvement though. When using the pitch model, it would be a good idea if the yellow dots had a number on then and a players name beneath name so we can see who typically does what in a specific role. Would be helpful for people who don’t know the squads too much

    @FizzleDIPS@FizzleDIPS5 жыл бұрын
    • Hi - thanks for your comment. The reason we don't do this is because squad rotation and changes make it really hard to be definitive and it would get confusing. Surprisingly few teams play consistent first XIs and different players bring different qualities, which we like to explain.

  • Very interesting video..As someone that follows N.C. -a few observations: while their current struggles in the premier league indicate relegation to be most likely Webbers statement that he wants to see 'Norwich as a "top 25 team" means a return to the championship shouldn't in itself be a 'failure'....depending on how the team is in personnel & 'spirit'.. Any large financial 'changes in January market to advoid relegation' I think would be a mistake.. & most importantly whatever on-pitch 'tactic plans ' you may have ..there is another team trying to stop you ...

  • Sheffield United and Chris Wilder is a must. Wilder has risen through the leagues from non-league and brought an incredibly unique style of play to Sheffield United. The squad is only UK and Irish, and our squad has been signed on the cheap. It would be a far more interesting video than Norwich or Leeds.

  • I remember going to Norwich at Boxing Day when they were playing us (forest) thinking we were going to get battered but somehow we were playing very well being 3 nil up till the 80th and something clicked, somehow Norwich nicked one back then another and I told my dad “were fucked” the board went up for 8 minutes of additional time and the pressured intensified. Any how in the 8th minute of time Gil Dias from us gave away a poor clearance and that was it 3-3 never felt so bitter and depressed on Christmas... Teams that go up do crazy things like this so good luck to Norwich! Praying Forest can somehow get the playoffs this season 😩

    • Just saying being near the top of the Championship with only players from UK + Ireland is quite impressive, considering players from abroad are generally cheaper. It's extremely hard to find value in the market of British players these days, Wilder has managed to do that and make a great championship team with hardly any money.

    • 1889BLADE1889 --- Where the players come from don't really matter. The foreign players Norwich have are classy lower league players from abroad. I'd rather watch a mix of home talent and excellent foreign players, than lots of journeyman that have been around every championship club. People are people, it's only ancient imposed borders that define them as foreigners. In terms of scale, Germany and France are closer than NY state and California.

  • I watched the whole season because I'm a Bielsa fan but I ended up hating and being impressed by this team too. I think the most valuable feature about Norwich is the confidence that every player shows when they get the ball. And of course, how dynamic and lively their style of play is, especially because of their fast left and right backs. I hope they can keep the momentum in the Premier League.
