Today's video:
Hello, friends! This is one of the first times ever that I've revisited an old idea, and I think I should start doing that a little more often considering how fun this project was. Over a year ago, I turned some ballpoint pens from three different species of wood, but just before applying the final finish, I lightly torched all three pens with fire (if you haven't yet seen this project, the video is here! kzhead.info/sun/Zt2wZbOFrKOhaZ8/bejne.html). To this day, those pens remain some of my favourite I've ever turned, and I decided it might be interesting to try out that same sort of concept with a bowl. For this project, I used a round of figured maple that I picked up from a local exotic wood supplier back in June of last year. I first turned the bottom, outside, and the lip of the bowl before sanding all surfaces up to 600 grit and then lightly burning those same areas with a propane torch. I then turned out the inside of the bowl and decided to leave the inside surface natural to provide some really striking contrast to the overall piece. The bowl was finished with Waterlox's original formula for a medium gloss appearance.
In the future, I'd love to try this out again with some different wood species. As beautiful as the figured maple was to work with, I think something like red oak would take the fire in a much more interesting way! What do you think?

I like that you leave plenty of wood in the bowl, not too thin as the wood is the star and that bowl certainly is a star.
Thank you, Terry! Yes, personally, I'm not a big fan of bowls with really thin rims, although I do respect the skill needed to turn them!
Great video 👍👍👍😎
I'm running out of adjectives to describe how accomplished I think your work is. This is a deceptively simple piece, but is elegant in its contrast and shape. Well-done. :)
Wow, I think you just made my day! :) Thank you so much for the very nice comment!
