0:00 Movie I: Presage Flower - Hana no Uta / 花の唄
2:58 Movie II: Lost Butterfly - I beg you
5:48 Movie III: Spring Song - Haru wa Yuku / 春はゆく
Whenever I decide to create a Piano Medley, I have an urge to tell the audience a story with the music alone. To achieve this, I have to make sure the flow of the music is well balanced from start to finish and each piece is musically connected with each other.
All three theme songs from the Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel movies are composed by Yuki Kajiura and performed by Aimer. Therefore, they have some sort of musical connection already by default and all I need to do is to find a good dynamic balance between each section of the 10-minute medley.
Each song is connected by a recurring musical figure - a harp-like arpeggio pattern - to create an otherworldly atmosphere for the entire medley. It appears in the introduction part of “Hana no Uta” 0:01, in the left hand in “I beg you” 3:30 and in the introduction part of “Haru wa Yuku” in 5:19.
"Hana no Uta" is a fascinating song because I can feel a certain “uneasiness” in the music. I think that’s because the Dbmaj7 chord is featured very prominently in the chord progression and it is constantly yearning for a musical resolution. I also used a few unusual left hand accompaniment in the verse 1:12 or in the chorus 1:53 to further emphasize the “uneasiness” in the music.
The biggest challenge of the medley was "I beg you" because this song is as “piano-unfriendly” as possible: It has only one chord progression for most of the time (C-major) and the rest of the song is carried by intense drum rhythms in the background. I tried out many, many left-hand patterns but none of them came close to the raw energy of a drum set. I finally found a solution by using endless arpeggio runs in the left hand 3:29 to create a bombastic, chaotic atmosphere.
Finally, we are reaching "Haru wa Yuku". This song is the main focus of the medley because it has the strongest emotional impact of all three songs and it's the only song of this medley which is arranged in its original full size. The final chorus is probably the highest melody range I have ever played. I wanted to create one last, final climax of the song by using almost every single key the piano is offering. And maybe in the hope, that the music can even reach to the heavens…
Before I go, I just want to thank everyone for your messages in last week's KZhead community post (kzhead.infoUgyC91ww.... I've read through all of them and they gave me a lot of strength to continue. Thank you so much for your support.
Life is truly mysterious, because any time could be the last time we are talking to someone very close to us. Things we take for granted can disappear without a warning. But ultimately, life goes on.
I will continue doing my best. Thank you for listening to my music.

    • Thank you so much for everything Animenz ! Haru wa Yuku is still one of my favourite songs and the way you played it made me cry a little, because there are so much emotions in this song, this movie, this arrangement and, of course, your playing. The other songs were very well arranged too of course. I want you to remember that you are very important for us, your fans, and that you are my main source of inspiration for playing the piano. 5 years ago, I began to play the piano after listening to your arrangements. You are my superhero and you always inspire me to keep going. You have already reached so many people's hearts and reached the heavens. Your grandfather would be proud of you I think. I hope you can keep doing what you love. As you said before, life goes on !

I didn’t talk to anyone for a whole week but the piano was there, to open up the chance for me to give them my final words before they were sent to heaven peacefully. The piano was my guiding light and put me back into a position I felt comfortable with. I know this medley would mean a lot to you as well, can’t wait to hear it man!

  • Life has been throwing so much at you lately, but I’m relieved you still persevere. My condolences, at least this medley probably serves as a good tribute, not just thematically. Since Aimer performed at AOF2021 last week, the timing is perfect, too. Edit: that Ab-Gdim-C-Fm chord progression in the chorus is just a III-ii°-V-i with the V being major instead of minor, but it somehow feels extremely powerful. I feel like the character limit for the description is restricting you once again from writing more which is pretty sad, especially for this medley. Thank you for this arrangement once again!

The intensity of "I beg you" reminds me of that ending section of "Sincerely", where you put all your emotions into the piano. The other movements were nothing short of perfect as well, and I love how you played "Spring Song" in full, especially since it resolves the despair and yearning of the first two songs, and shows that life truly goes on. • From this performance, I think Animenz is trying to tell us to cherish the moments with the ones we love, that still lives in this world. If we don't cherish it, once they left this world, what's left behind is regret. Regret is the deepest hell in this world. Beautiful performance, Animenz

  • I've appreciated your arrangements for years but I think this is the first one to make me cry. And twice. What a wonderful arrangement, I'm not sure how I missed seeing this before but it is such a beautiful medley.

  • Dear Animenz, We can feel your sadness and sense of loss as you go through this time. I’m sure your music reaches your grandfather and he is so proud of you. Thank you for helping us grieve with you. Much love to you and your family.

  • Just re listening to this again, it really feels like Animenz’s entire journey through his emotion, sadness, pain, then acceptance and moving forward (after his grandfather’s passing) It’s so powerful. And despite how much it hurts to have one go, somehow I always see/feel the most raw emotion put into projects like this. It’s breathtaking, just the experience alone. This might be the most expressive piano performance I’ve heard all year (no … maybe the most I’ve *ever* heard on piano) Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us Animenz, even while you were hurting. Wishing you the best, and know that you reached us with your music. ありがとう!

  • That bass register in the 1st to 2nd part just went from a walking bass line then eventually starts running 👀, I love how those arpeggiated chords connect to each part of the song as it progresses

  • I'm really sorry to hear that. When I saw the post, my heart sank because even though I don't know you personally, you seem like such a kind soul, and you don't deserve something like that to happen. Just know that we love you, Animenz, and we'll continue to support you through any hardships you're dealing with!

  • My deepest condolences for your loss. May your melodies forever reach through to the heavens. My first impression of this arrangement was the wondrous cascade of flowing poignant arpeggios remniscent of your Little Busters arrangement - another tribute to the passing of a dear soul. The second was the cathartic nature of the rhythmic passage in the middle section. And last but certainly not least, the beautiful dark color and resonance of the final climax. These elements all blended together to create a truly amazing masterpiece. His spirit lives on.

  • Just watched HF for the first time (actually the whole FSN/FZ series), and I have to say that it was the best executed storyline (although my favorite pairing is with Rin). However, I hadn’t listened to the credits (was binge watching the movies), which was a mistake. Thank you for making me go back and listen to the original songs, and then provide this amazing piano arrangement! Your arrangements always rock, buddy!
