Last week, my friend placed his bag on a chair at the hotel lobby in PARIS. Within 5 minutes, his bag was gone. Inside the bag are iPhone and US passport. Be careful everywhere!
Keep your passport and phone secured onto your body clothes..all of your valuables so a thief has to really work hard to get at them…as you should feel him rifling through them.. You wouldnt feel a thing as your bag left the chair..
Even over 20 years ago you had to watch out in paris. My mom got robbed while she was in a store. Nothing has changed.

About 5 out of 10 people in know travelled to VN and got pickpocketed, bag snatched, or something stolen from hotel room...Not to say that it's not a safe place, just be extra careful... especially on the streets.

I was just in Hanoi last week with my family, and my dad's phone and 3 cards were stolen from his waistbag while he was waiting outside at a shop near the lake. He didn't even notice until he found his waistbag already opened. Hotel staff assisted us to police station so that we can have a theft incident report for insurance claim but the police was adamant in reporting it as missing property instead of theft. In Sapa, we also experienced our day bags' zippers opened randomly. Lesson learned: be extra alert. I love Vietnam and visited 3x before pandemic and didn't experience this aggression.
Waistbags are always a target, especially if they are worn on your back. Use a money belt and wear your waist pack on your stomach with the zipper worn toward your body.

MY LAST TRIP WAS IN KRUNG THEP - I WAS TOTALLY ROBBED BY PICKPOCKET TOO. MY CREDIT CARD, -A HOTEL KEY ECT.....THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE CARTE QUICKLY BLOCKED AND A NEW HOTEL KEY WAS DECODED. I DID NOT LOVE IT AT ALL - I WAS VERY MAD! WANTED TO CHANGE EUROS TO BUY SOME GIFTS AND AFTER 1 HOUR THERE WAS NO CENT LEFT!

@@cedric2827 They are very likely Vietnamese or Cambodian. The Thai government is trying to crack them down. You can see a sign of warning Vietnamese pickpocketers in some area in Bangkok. Almost all fruit juice sellers in Sukhumvit are Vietnamese. Don't buy it from them as it's unhygienic.

Travelled to Vietnam 3 times, most recently for a month in August. As per other comments here opportunistic crime occurs if you are not careful with your belongings. We have never had a problem. Conversely I dropped a pair of Oakley sunglasses when entering a restaurant and a person came over and handed them to me. Great country and people and just like everywhere else in the world where a few people give a place a poor reputation.
Absolutely agree. I lived in Hanoi for a year. I was pick pocketed once, but it was completely my own fault for being negligent 😅 Vietnam is a beautiful country and the people are so kind.
One KZheadr who is an rxpat in Thailand went to VN and his go pro was stolen too. He was devastated and moved on to film the rest of the country like you. YOU ROCK!! Every country has this problem, which is why here in the Philippines we always remind people, may they be tourists or locals, to be aware of their belongings, because no matter how friendly our people are, there are always some who are bad. Those people don't choose their victims, so always be aware of your belongings.

Let me clear up a few misunderstandings, Jack. As foreigners living abroad in Southeast Asia, you don't face racial discrimination. But since you are White, so you'll be Ok in many countries. I'm Vietnamese American, does it mean I can live anywhere in the USA? No, I was lucky enough to live in NYC and California. Recently, there are a few attacks on Asians in NYC by some demented Americans. Being Asian, I would not dare to live in smaller cities or towns in the USA, both in terms of economically and politically. Somehow, the VN government does not welcome foreign retirees in VN anymore. I may be wrong! Anyway if you plan to retire in VN, I recommend Danang, a city of 1 million people on the central coast of VN. Here you have all modern conveniences, condo rental is reasonable, and so are food and entertainment. Negative aspects of Danang are a few big storms (not in the hurricane categories) during the year. Here the beauty of nature (beaches, mountains, rivers) is undeniable. There is an international school of secondary level. One more thing, the medical cost in VN is not as exorbitant as in the USA. A month's stay in the hospital in the USA can run you up to a million dollars. It's an overt robbery. Thailand is a great country to retire too but Bangkok is too crowded; traffic jams are as bad as in Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Los Angeles. You can choose Phuket, Pattaya, Chiangmai, or some beautiful locations in Thailand. However, food in Thailand is not as light as Vietnamese food in terms of spice. Thai food is very palatable to Vietnamese and vice versa. Thai and Vietnamese food is quite yummy! Both Vietnam and Thailand are quite safe for foreign retirees, I believe. A good thing about the Phillippines is a majority of them speak English. Safety I don't know. Turkey is a great country too but the political situation there, is it safe? If a regime is oppressive to the natives, does a foreigner feel the same way?
@@fairview6120 I also looked into living da nang and I was gonna check it out for sure the only issue is the visa for Vietnam is so short and you have to keep doing border run… so as much as I love to live in Vietnam for a few months I don’t think it’s feasible for most people.
@@hiddensoroush Agree with what you said. I don't understand why the VN government doesn't welcome retirees. The ex-pat communities in Danang all have some kind of job, therefore they are allowed to stay long-term. Most of them are English teachers or work for some companies. I'm a retiree and would love to go back to VN to volunteer for some educational work for Vietnamese kids as long as my health permits but this dream can never be realized.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience in Vietnam. I’ve travelled there many times in the past ten years and never had any problems. Vietnamese people are some of the friendliest people that you’ll find anywhere. Thailand is the only place in SE Asia where I felt unsafe. I was attacked by a robber with a knife in Bangkok but luckily I got away unharmed. Crime can happen anywhere. Be safe and enjoy the journey!
According to WWI, II, the Cold War and the Chinese revolution, Thailand, this small and poor country became the hub of immigrants and be a melting pot of Thai, Chinese, Lao, Khmer, Vietnamese, Mon, Karen, Hmong, Malays, Indian, etc. And one of my neighbor is still have civil war going on, that makes Thailand has approx. 500,000 stateless people (most of them are from Myanmar) nowadays. So the circumstances in each country are different.

@@RUHappyATM I don't want to dissuade you from visiting Thailand. As long as you are smart and aware of your surroundings you should be fine. Violent crime can happen anywhere. That being said, I still believe that there are much safer (and interesting) places to travel in SE Asia such as Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.
I think crime rate in Vietnam and Thailand are quite similar. Scam and robbery happen in both countries, so it depends on your own experience. Some people live/ travel in Thailand but never experience such a thing, but of course Thailand is not a safe country, but at the same level with Vietnam in my view

That is devastated news I am so sorry to hear that. I had someone stole my entire backpack in Italy inside the train from Milan to Switzerland. I lost my gopro and two weeks of footage + credit cards & everything in my backpack. I was so sad shock & cried a bit but determine not to let that steal my joy away for the remaining trip in Switzerland. What go around come around be safe Olga. Love your channel.

@@OlgaProGoingPlaces Split your $ into few places. The worse thing is I need to travel to Geneva to get my replacement passport and my 3 friends have to move on to Zermatt. Morally I was not alone but I need to deal with it alone though. I can't drag everyone to come with me. The hotel booked and train tickets were paid for to Zermatt etc. they stole my iphone too even though I got insurance but the 2 weeks footage all gone. It happened to me in Italy and Vietnam (dropped my passport picked up by someone. I found out within a short time and manage to retrieve) so don't get distracted while you are filming. People are watching literary your every move, dress down blend in and don't forget to enjoy.
my whole backpack was stolen in Brusell Train staion July 2019, i lost passport, phone, cash, watch, total abt 6000 euros. when i finally got to the police station, police told me it is common, and i met a few other ppl who had same cases. also ppl luggages were stolen when they travel by train and left things on rack, on my God, i was shocked by my 1st trip to Europe. in Rome or Barcelona subway, u could feel sb was pulling your zipper from back, when u stopped him, he will do 2nd try, fack, whay a world!

Great perspective when it comes to getting your phone stolen. I was pickpocketed recently in Izmir and thought the same thing. Life is so precious, materials can be replace and it definitely could’ve been worse. Sorry about your phone.

I was in HCM city for a week then rode the train to Hanoi.I shave my head and I’m covered in tattoos and I met some really nice people on that train even though I didn’t speak Vietnamese.The only time I ever have trouble is with other Foreigners.
Been here for quite a while and have been fortunate to not lose anything of value yet. This is a good reminder to stay vigilant when you're in any crowded area. Especially at night, when all the riffraff comes out. It seems to me petty crime like this is on the rise here in Hanoi, especially after all the lockdowns and people losing their income for long periods of time. Sorry to hear about your bad experience, and I hope it doesn't ruin your impression of the country! Safe travels!

Sorry to hear, I feel for you. I got my sister’s new iPhone stolen in Barcelona last month :(. 1,800USD. We lost photos from Greece, Italy, and Spain. Apple Care didn’t cover, even though we had insurance on it. Mercado de la Boqueria in Barcelona is where it happened. Same similar situation, we were about to leave for the airport but was rushing to use the ladies’ room. Truly my fault, someone was watching me take photos with a new iPhone, placed it in a very wide and open pocket, then proceeded to walk on a very crowded area. I was being careless. As a Vietnamese, I’m sorry for bad thing happened to you. And as Vietnamese from Australia, I visited my country many times and I even got robbed from local once. I’m kinda glad you mention this so people want to travel to VN actually need to be extra careful with their belonging (specially: phone, wallet & camera). Anyway, hope you enjoy the rest of VN.

Hi Olga & Rene, sorry to see and hear you were robbed upon arriving in Vietnam, been watching your stories unfold in Antalya as my wife and I lived across there in Turkey Antalya and Altinkum for nearly 10yrs until poor health forced us to move back to UK. We used to visit Goa, India for the Winter though November - March and chase the sun, great place to settle and worth some investigations on your behalf, maybe. Keep up the great and informative videos, you are both doing a great job, keep travelling and most of all pair of you keep smiling and being happy in the life you choose

Hello, I'm so sorry to hear that you got robbed. Twenty years ago my co workers and I got cheated in Hanoi. There are good and bad people in every country, so you have to be careful. Try to explore more countries around neighborhoods such as Cambodia, Thailand or Laos. Good luck on your adventure!

feel years ago, i went HCM 1stime & met a good person who saw me hanging camera on my neck, he told us to becareful during bring those digital item. i saw others you-tuber went there also been robbed iphone. 😅 just becareful during using any digital item.
I know how it feels. My camera was stolen in spain a day before my departure back home after travelling 5 countries in Europe. I was devastated not because of the stolen camera but of the stolen pictures that would have been my beautiful memories ..
This seems to get more common. I have lived in Vietnam since 1995 and never had anything stolen but I have always made it a point of not showing my phone in public.

I was robbed too at a bazzar in Hanoi on my 1st trip there . They worked in group , slashed my backpack , my camera was taken . I normally keep my money in 2 parts of my trouser . When I glanced that they had penknives , I stayed calm and walked away fast , when I turned back , I saw a group of ladies staring at me ! On the whole , I still think Hanoi is still a safe place , I went back there 3 more times and once to HCMC. I loved Sapa and Halong Bay.

I know the robbery will leave a massive dent on the image of Vietnam. I'm really sorry for this terrible incident happened to you. I know there is little thing left that could be done, but at least i recommend you to report your cade to the police. Or at least share it with some local newspaper ? Maybe it helps every bit to bring traction to this case. If it left unattended by the VN authority then Vietnam really deserve no tourism at all.
I've always liked Vietnamese people but honestly I feel Western people shouldn't be in these countries. You see the resentment against them in Thailand. Western nations are collapsing demographically and we should be focusing on raising families there and allow Asians to do the same thing.

Theft like this happens everywhere, not just in Vietnam. I'm sure people will be more aware of their items now when they travel, that's all. Here in America, my aunt from France had her phone in her back pocket at Disneyland, which got stolen. Despite this, it's harsh to say that Vietnam deserves no tourism because of it. There's so much more to Vietnam than petty thefts. There's food, temples, architecture, the people, language, culture, etc!

Korea will be a nurse home soon as will Japan and China due to their demographic nightmare and Korea also has the world's highest suicide rate amongst it's elderly many of whom are now abandoned by their own children. After working their asses off for so many years to build Korea into an economic powerhouse the elderly are not even cared for by a young generation who themselves don't even want children. They say it's for financial reasons but our societies including Russia and Europe are collapsing for spiritual reasons and isn't Thailand also?

Sorry to hear about this. Ive lived in Hanoi 3 years now, most people are very kind and it is a great place, despite some obvious flaws. I hope you would consider coming back.
I've travelled for years and been around the world 4 times. Hanoi is the only city in the world that when when the aircraft pushed back I breathed a sigh of relief and vowed never to return, and I haven't. The thing I personally hated was the fact that you had to check every transaction as they tried to cheat me almost every time. When you caught them i.e. no I didn't order two bottles of wine. They were resentful and rude. I've taken my money elsewhere!

So sorry this happened to you, Olga. I know you won't lose your faith in humanity because of it, but things like that can surely put doubts in one's head. Try not to feel bad about yourself, we've all been through incidents like this or worse. I once had my wallet stolen on the train from Moscow to Kyiv in 2008, right before the border stop. All because of my own carelessness and stupidity. So a few hours later I arrived in Kyiv with zero cash, no credit cards and no driver's license. Imagine all the fun of that day. You still made a lovely video, as I'm sure you will the future ones, too. Everything will be okay.

It does leave a sour taste when you are a visitor to someone's country to have things stolen. Luckily the Turkish people i have to say are the best in the world for actually protecting us foreigners from theft. Never carry a phone or wallet in back pockets in most cities!!!!
In 1987 I got robbed twice in Istanbul, the first time by the hotel staff in sultan ahmet, they stole $100, second time a man stole my camera by the autograd. It was during Eid

I'm ex military when I first arrive anywhere I'm on my top form watch everything and I'm Mr security himself. Now yours was 35 years ago and any theft leaves a sour taste

@@ianreid 87 was a bit crazy in Istanbul. The hotel staff were trying to sell me hash, I thought at the time it was so they could get a cop friend to arrest, then extort me for cash. When it didn't work they stole the $100. The guy who stole my camera was smooth, I was distracted by a family killing, then skinning a sheep for eid. He took some photos of me then went for cigarettes, I forgot he still had my camera. Honestly a good thief The guy in the cafe opposite tried to recruit me into smuggling tiny electric car parts into Turkey, he said the import tax made it profitable. I declined The PKK shot up a police station with machine guns, no casualties thankfully. And there was a train accident killing 2 people This all happened in 2 weeks Been the virgin islands 3 times, Thailand 3 times, round Europe, even nigeria. Never had a problem

I lived in many countries in Asia and the Middle East from 2005-2013. The only place I was robbed was at a market in Hanoi. They kept slamming into me really hard until they slammed super hard with a violent 🗡️ plunge into my bag and they stole my wallet. The way you are recommending how to hold your bag is how I was holding it. I almost got stabbed really HARD in my abdomen!

I am sorry for what happened. Having travelled in Asia quite a bit it is helpful to get a pickpocket proof backpack when walking in busy areas. You can look online for options, where there arent any pockets on the front but they are at the back where you slide in your phone and wallets, valuables so when you wear the backpack its not accessible to others. When I first arrived in Antalya I went to a cafe and i had my phone in my backpack side pocket, the man at the counter told me to put it inside my backpack otherwise someone might swipe it. i was careful from then on, However, both times my husband lost his phone and his card it was there waiting for him when he went back to where he lost it, even though he left his phone on a busy restaurant. I also feel that Antalya is safer than main city areas of Asia, but I think investing in some bags that are safer would get rid of that issue. All the best.

@@vincentblackshadow1581 yes. Yesterday I went to a laundry token establishment in Çapa, İstanbul, and I saw a bright coloured phone lying alone in a bench inside the shop, but nobody even touched it, until the owner went back to the shop hurriedly and picked it up. Amazing!
We lived in Ha Noi for 3 yrs. We found quite safe and the petty crime low. A crime of opportunity is prevalent anywhere and only more probable when the environment is creates desperate circumstances for people. I was just in Ha Noi for 42hrs and I remembered quickly that everything I missed (food, some people) was diminished by all the things that made us want to leave. Wiht that said I think everyone should visit Ha Noi and Viet Nam in general. Like you said, basic rules for safeguarding your belongings should be followed everywhere, city or countryside.

So sorry to hear you went through this. I've lived here 5 years now and feel very safe. I accidentally left my keys in my motor bike last night for hours and my bike was still there.
I traveled a lot in Vietnam 1992-95, and was targeted by pickpockets many times, mostly in Saigon. After a while I learnt to recognize these people and didn't lose anything. People also tried to snatch my bag from a passing motorbike, but they also didn't succeed.

Lived there 5 years and was never robbed . Its the safest big city in Vietnam
I got robbed the same way in Thailand, Bangok. Was walking noisy street at night through the crowd, went back to my hotel room, took off my backpack only to see that it is wide open and my wallet bag inside is gone, it had all the documents, money and cards. Going back to my country immediately was a whole quest of its own, even though I had plans to stay and travel all over thailand before getting robbed. A lesson to all of you who may read this is: ALWAYS CARRY YOUR BACKPACK ON FRONT! while traveling south east asian countries. ALWAYS - or else sooner or later you are going to get robbed, a 100%. Its an invitation to get robbed. Its pretty easy to open a backpack in a noisy street and take stuff away and you won't even notice it, criminals do that all the time, standard thievery. The only way to prevent it is to carry backpack on front and let the thieves cry. P.S. I did travel Vietnam from North to South via train visiting every major town. Was pretty nice experience, met lots of friendly people. Never got robbed, felt pretty safe. It was before getting robbed in Thailand. However, from the time I got robbed, even in Vietnam I'd carry backpack on front, just as a matter of principle. Better be safe than sorry.
Sorry you lost all your documents and had to go back home :( My story is the opposite - I was never robbed in Thailand and lived there for 1,5 years total. But now I’m living in Vietnam and since this video (october 2022) I never lost anything here. Carrying the backpack on the front in a crowded area is definatly a lesson. I would also recommend having some money/documents back at the hotel or at least in different pockets. In case you get robbed, at least they don’t take everything you have.

It will only makes you stronger and yes, lack of sleep can make us more susceptible to notorious scamming in SE Asia and petty theft. I also got scammed in my birth country in SE Asia after years living in my second home. Good to know that you two are keeping a cherry and positive attitude - as always wishing you safe travel and adventures. With the holidays season coming and post-Covid it’s getting harder for people economically so we gotta be aware of our surrounding more I guess but kinds hard to think when we need sleep and more alert. Why dont you identify what is your birth country in SEA? Why you just mention the whole ten countries to be your birthplace? Or maybe the thief that scammed you was from ten countries of SEA??😅😅😅😅 This is unfair to the rest SEA countries. Just say that your birth country that you got robbed or stolen is Vietnam. That’s it! We know that every countries have bad and good people but you mustn’t stereotypically say that SEA countries is the place for scamming and thief just because of you got robbed in your birth country in SEA. That’s ridiculous!
I have an iPhone and iPad and MacBook and I have it synced so all the photos are on all of them and they sync automatically. And I’m in Vietnam too. I love Hanoi but after a week or two it’s stressful. I keep my phone in my front pocket. Most people are good and honest but you always have to be careful.
We spent two weeks in Vietnam in August. Started in Hanoi, which we loved, then toured around (Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue) and finishing in Saigon which we found a bit too busy for our tastes. We made a point of being careful there as we'd been warned about the moped gangs. Saigon was also the only place where we had problems with our hotel and excessive charges. Overall we absolutely loved Vietnam, Hanoi and Hue being two places we'd definitely go back to if we get the opportunity... other parts of the world to see first.
