Transparent restrooms, which turn opaque once the door is locked, have gone into operation at two parks in Tokyo, Japan. They are part of a project launched by a non-profit organisation and local government to renovate 17 public washrooms in Shibuya. The programme aims to dispel Japanese stereotypes that public toilets are dirty, smelly and scary.

It uses electricity to align the liquid crystals in it and make it transparent. When there's no electricity the liquid crystals go back to where they were and tint the glass.

@Stark Industries I guess she was trying to say that if it malfunction, it might turn in a translucid glass, not the opposite. You mean bug?

The funny thing is, public toilets in Japan compared to other countries I have visited are much more clean than anywhere else. Not once was I scared to go into a public restroom in Japan. Idk what this tells about other countries' public restrooms though :'D
They are a disaster in most countries.
Paid toilets are still present in Ulaanbaatar ! It's 21st century, c'mon. Let's change that. The paid toilets are mostly squatting w/ absolutely no guarantee of safety and cleanness. Outside UB it's even worse. Using an outhouse while it's freezing cold is almost impossible.
Chinese toilets are definitely not great. The best thing to do in China is to use one in a nice hotel.
isn’t all of japan cleaner than everywhere else?
