It's great that youtubers can make money online with brand deals, but sometimes I think they don't really consider their audience when accepting which companies and products to promote. Gabbie Hanna, Tana Mongeau, and others have promoted Kenza Cosmetics and many of their fans who purchased the makeup brushes feel they have been scammed. More recently, Jake Paul and RiceGum, plus other youtubers, have partnered with a mystery box website which promotes gambling to their young audiences.

  • Gabbie got more hate because she didn't seem to care about the fact she scammed her fans. She made it sound like it was the fans fault and she did no wrong

    • pinkie babie yeah, that’s the reason she got more than TM. If you watch it, it’s like her manager told her she had to do an apology video, and she was trying to do it without apologizing. I wasn’t a Gabi fan, but watching that just made me cringe for her followers. It’s like she was insulting her followers’ intelligence. It was bad.

    • angel and who’s fault is that? More and more technology and the aspects of the internet are permiated in the childhood of these kids. Yes we should try to hold these influencers to an ethical standard but also if u don’t know what ur kids are watching, who they follow, what that mystery charge is on ur credit card that ur kid stole then they need to do better instead of adding an extra burden on our already failing education system coz parents are lazy or aren’t proactive enough.

  • 10 dollar is a lot of money. 10 dollar usually makes a difference to my gas tank. I mean this, having gas gets me to work so I can make money to pay bills, for food and ect. So when I have a bit of money left over I like to buy stuff that is worth those few bucks I have. That's why I don't spend a lot of money online I like seeing the product and feeling it so I can tell what the quality is.

I mean yeah they could have realized that seems to good to be true, but sometimes sites do good deals as a promotion and this influencer presented it to them like it was a good thing without saying what quality they actually were. Basically I'm saying people need to care about their money more and wonder why 10 little brushes cost that much to ship, but these influencers also deserve the backlash they got because they promoted a product they wouldn't normally use themselves and with no care for their audience.

  • It always astounds me that the more money someone gets, the more money they want. In my mind I'd like to think that when someone becomes a millionaire they stop caring as much about huge payouts (just earning enough money to continue to fund their existing lifestyle, which I assume adsense and things like patreon already do) and focus more on quality content for their audiences. But when you start making a lot of money, especially in the easy way these influencers make it, your relationship to money changes. Suddenly, it's OK to take advantage of your platform and essentially scam your audience, because what's a couple bucks here or there compared to the thousands you make on a weekly basis?

      @slavmetal@slavmetal5 жыл бұрын
    • Phoebe HB I think it’s actually the other way around. The less money you have the more empathy you have I feel. It’s always my poorer friends who don’t mind paying for my lunch and we don’t hold it over each other’s heads. I just know the next time I have money I don’t mind paying for their meal. But whenever I’ve had to borrow money from a wealthier friend literally 2mins later it’s “hey when can I have my dollar back?” Literally ONE dollar. But I’ve had a poor friend lend me $60 and didn’t once ask me for it back for MONTHS until I was able to pay her back.

I'm not hurting for money now so much, but I used to be, and at least imo, in general, if your financial situation doesn't require it, you really shouldn't expect friends to pay back occasional small loans of the amounts you're describing; and if they do pay you back, that should just be more of a nice surprise, a friend doing a good turn, than a loan shark kind of situation.

  • Ten dollars is a fortune to me. When my very first brushes from high school (I'm 34....LOL) finally completely gave out and fell apart, I spent days agonizing over which low-cost brushes to order online. I watched about a billion reviews by respected youtubers, read a million more written reviews on Amazon, etc.... in case anyone is here wondering about the same sort of thing, I recommend going with Docolor brush sets from Amazon. You get the correct product within a reasonable wait time, and they're a little over ten bucks for a set this size, and I actually REALLY do like them, they're nice and soft but not so much that they don't move product correctly. I'd obviously been using garbage up until this point, so maybe even really cheap stuff would feel amazing to me 😂 but I honestly find the set I got to be pretty good. Especially for $13. I'm also not getting anything out of writing this comment, they don't pay me or anything 😂 I just want to be helpful if someone out there is poor and stressing over this like I did! 😛

  • I feel like if you're talking about this is also really really important to talk about the Kardashians and people like that and those weight loss products. They are already millionaires who keep making more and more money selling the idea that girls need to lose weight and look a certain way. It's truly truly evil and actress Jameela Jamil has given some interviews on this topic and she's much more eloquent than I am, but I just thought it was pertinent and on topic. Making money blindly and selling out your fans is wrong, specially when you're making girls even more insecure about their bodies.

    • that discussion, if its going to be had, should be expanded to diet culture and the beauty industry in general. Influencers and celebs are simply taking advantage of an industry that's already been around and primed for them by putting their face or body to a product. Granted this DOES escalate the impact of the scammery, but getting to the root if the problem, rather than the fruits, is a lot more useful and effective to shut behavior like this down.

You would ASSUME based upon LOGIC that these KZheadrs who use high quality products would only promote products that are cohesive with the image they are trying to project. But there's this rising trend of KZheadrs who are interested primarily in making money, not creating quality content OR having quality sponsorships. • Doing anything Jake Paul suggests is foolery, never mind spending money on a box without any idea what is inside it. I think part of the problem with this phenomenon is that this influencer culture promotes glamorous over the top lifestyles, particularly showing off their wealth, encouraging the influencer to then hyper focus on acquiring more and more of said wealth in order to continue to support the image that made them famous. Particularly with people like Jake Paul who essentially say and do nothing of any real substance and spend large amounts of time "flexing" and somehow this gets them massive amounts of views, sponsorships, etc. In a sense, they have been trained to consider making large sums of money (in order to show it off) as an acceptable ultimate goal, overshadowing the method of how that money is acquired.

I thought youtubers like her only wanted the best for her subscribers so I did not expect it, and so did quite a lot of other people in the comments of her box video’s. She never adressen this. • Something that I haven’t actually seen much analysis of with regards to brand deals etc. is the ways that youtubers have made money over time if that makes sense? Like years ago I feel like youtubers used to make the majority of their money from AdSense, I remember when smosh and others of the biggest channels on KZhead at the time made videos sponsored by some mushroom burger (I think it was Carl’s jr. but I’m not entirely sure) but I remember how much of a novelty that seemed, now it feels like every video by a youtuber with 20k+ subs is sponsored by audible or blue apron or what have you. That on top of most youtubers having patreon. Not that I don’t understand the needs for these kinds of things, youtubers deserve to be compensated for their work, it’s a job like any other, and ads and especially patreon help you because you know there will be money coming in month by month but still. Seems to me like the KZhead climate necessitates having to find outside sources of income like sponsorships tours merch patreon etc. How has it happened that people allow KZhead itself not to pay people as much for the content they provide when without the creators KZhead wouldn’t have much of anything worth consistently logging in to see? Idk I’m not a KZheadr so I don’t know about ad money and brands but from an outside perspective it’s something I have been interested in and would love to see about

    • This is such a good point. Maybe if KZhead provided a more supportive platform for it's content creators, they might not be so tempted to take these sideways deals.

      @marvastroud8772@marvastroud87724 жыл бұрын
    • Keep in mind that KZhead is about the only social media platform that shares revenue and creators get 55% of the ad revenue. KZhead operates st a loss costing 6 billion to maintain and bringing in 4 billion in ads (which it shares) now obviously money is made elsewhere in the company to off set that but there are a lot of creators slicing up the ad dollar pie. I am glad they allow sponsorship and allow us to sell our own products which is the best way to make a sustainable living I think. Good luck with your channels:)

    @teedubb176@teedubb1765 жыл бұрын
    • I think it's because hardly anyone had high expectations for Tana at any point in the first place. The only contexts in which I've ever heard of her, or heard of anyone else hearing of her, are always negative trashy scammy things. It's like she's built her entire reputation out of it, so now nobody even reacts.

  • Influencers don't necessarily have to promote sketchy stuff for this to be an issue. I was on the market for a new Wacom Cintiq tablet and lo and behold, all my favorite art KZheadrs were reviewing the Huion tablet and crowing about how great they were for an affordable tablet. It got to a point I was seriously considering getting one especially since they were half the price of a Cintiq. Then a couple of months later I began to notice that NOT ONE of the art KZheadrs I followed were using the Huion ( THAT THEY ALL GOT FOR FREE BTW ) in their day to day work flow, not even as a backup system. It was like the Huion tablet never existed. But then sometimes I would get the odd video recommendation that would talk about how the Huion was actually cheap (you get what you pay for and there's a reason Wacom is a market leader), didn't work correctly, and how you're better off saving up for a Cintiq anyway, which is what I ended up doing. But I definitely learned not to trust art KZheadr recommendations for products unless they were using the product in their day to day without pointing it out.

  • I definitely think Gabbie Hanna shouldn't have taken such an obviously sketchy brand deal and she was condescending about it, but I wouldn't say she's completely wrong about managing expectations. Like the moment you hear a product is "free" from a random website you've never heard of, you shouldn't be expecting much. Influencer marketing is super effective obviously, but no one is forcing you as a viewer to follow through on every ad. Gabbie definitely deserves to be called out but...I am sort of floored by the amount of people who really thought they were gonna get these insanely nice brushes? Granted, I think the Jake Paul and Ricegum situation is more unnerving since their audiences generally skew younger and as we all know, this isn't the first time JP has taken advantage of his audience for the $$$

    @shanisokay@shanisokay5 жыл бұрын
    • This is old now but I agree! I understand why people were upset and I don’t think Gabbie Hanna really phrased what she was trying to say correctly, but looking at the situation as an adult it’s hard for me not to agree with the fact that young people need to understand situations like these and “manage their expectations.” It’s just reality and goes to the larger conversation of just how easily young people are influenced by people on KZhead and whether or not that’s a good thing

  • I feel like kids technically already can gamble. Blind bags, blind toys are a thing. They are everywhere's. And I feel like ever toy company is also getting into the game with it. In my opinion it wouldn't be so bad if it's under 5 bucks. But there's toys that are over $10 and they are blind. Like LOL for example, those dolls are a mystery, you don't know who your getting if they are rare or not, etc. And people buy them for $15 and above. They also count a collectors guide and stickers to say which one you got as apart of the surprise of the toy. and the real "play" Is just unwrapping the item and seeing if it's a rare or not. & toy youtubers make that also as a big deal. "Did I get a rare!? omg no way!" or "Oh it's just a common. Maybe next one is going to be a rare!?" while opening a lot of these toys. Anyways, I just wanted to put this out there so you know, cause you were saying they should wait till there 18 to get those tickets. XD They kinda already gamble with toys. (And if you haven't seen these blind bag toys you should look into them. Companies like LOL create a lot of waste too. And I think that would be interesting for you to talk about, as you've talked about thrifting before and the whole minimizing the plastic foot print)

  • I've seen something similar to the brushes scam going on with fashion watches on more male-targeted channels. General rule: when you see non-watch channels endorsing $200-ish watches, the watches are probably cheap quartz junk that you can get for 1/10th that on Ali Express. And you can get something much nicer and serviceable from a reputable brand like Seiko, Casio, Timex, Citizen, Orient, etc. for the same price. Or take a slight gamble and buy the cheap watch for its actual cost, though you'd still probably be happier with something sub-$100 from a reputable brand.
