The Saga of Chamath Palihapitiya

Chamath has been absolutely blowing up over the last year. His SPACs have done incredibly well, his new podcast is at the top of the charts, and now he’s running for Governor of California. I figured it would be interesting to run through his history and try and tie some things together into a coherent narrative. He’s a super interesting person in Silicon Valley and someone who I think is very genuine and authentic. Definitely hoping to hear more from him in the future.

I am also the adult child of an alcoholic immigrant who couldn’t keep a job.
I'm the adult child of 2/3 of those. It sucks but it's definitely an experience that's shaped me for better or for worse.
Chill Garry. You're doing great. We wouldn't have Initialized otherwise 😂
As painful as it can be, a chip on the shoulder seems to be extremely powerful. That desire to do things differently carries through to everything. It’s really motivating.
I'm an alcoholic who can't keep a job, but at least I'm not squatting someone else's country 😂😂
Hey Garry I drink from your abundance of wisdom,I am always looking forward for your content...u are doing great job,I love you garry
Saga of an Indian snake oil salesman better suits the title
I love that you covered his hardships. This is encouraging.
Been on a rabbithole on your channel -- thank you so much for making this, I love your analysis and thought process on topics that dont sit in traditional good/bad analysis. You seem like an arbiter of shades of grey. Cheers mate
I love to hear that. Exactly what I’m going for. Non-emotional analysis of deeper subjects that are interesting but not covered to death.
Just found this channel. Love the content John keep going. Helpful for us in the early stages
Great story telling - especially loved the analysis on his childhood & how the video starts & ends with it
Thanks a bunch! I really tried to tie it all together. Glad that came through.
New subscriber to the channel from the most recent videos you've done. I have to say well done on your progress in the last year. Seeing where your channel is to where it was is very encouraging to see. Taking the best parts of what was working and continuing to modify and improve is everything good about being a creator. Props man and keep up the good work.
It has been great to hear his thoughts on what success looks like. Please keep up the good work as our world needs more people like you. I like being able to listen to him and hearing the All-In guys discuss the world issues. I would vote for all of them....
Great story telling John....congrats on an authentic and insightful delivery ....All The Best and much appreciate your narrative
Thanks a lot David! Appreciate that.
brilliant work John, best wishes for the channel!
Good stuff as always. Only time will tell until this channel grows. 👍
Hope so!
I had a different take which is SPACs might hurt Chamaths legacy since I’ve heard that he was pumping the SPACs that he created as he was selling shares. I never bought any SPACs because 20% fees are much much higher the a ipo fee.
He's nicknamed scamath for a reason
Sir your channel is amazing, I’ve been watching every video as they come out. The content is always interesting and well put together. Keep up the good work 😁👍🏻
That means so much to me! Thanks a ton for the encouragement!
Thanks for the great content God bless you,I enjoy your content
great narration, I didn't know much about him so this was a great video
Thanks a lot! I learned a ton as well while making this.
This is great story. I love your analysis. Thanks
Very deep & insightful ✨✨ subscribed ❤️
This channel will be huge. Wish I could invest in it.
I’ll make you a deal: keep watching, sharing, commenting and helping the channel grow and I’ll give you a shoutout when I break 1k subs.
@@JohnCooganPlus +1 :)
We made it to 1k! Just remembered this old post. Gotta give you a shoutout in the next video I record!
@@JohnCooganPlus Wow, had to look if you were actually at 1k at the time. Now 148k. Incredible! Will be looking back at this comment in a year or two with 1M+ for sure!
Another great analysis and story. 😎
Good stuff - here after seeing Chamath in the news
I've had this one in the works for a few weeks now but damn, the timing was perfect. Glad you found it!
This didn't age well. "His SPACs have done incredibly well" - LMAO
damn your vids really came a long way!
Great video, John!
Thanks Remo!
Good analysis again, thanks.
Appreciated!
great storytelling! I'm sure Chamath is cognizant of himself but it'd be great if he gets to see this video
Very nice and useful video 👍.
Chamath cares about Chamath. Period. Hard stop.
Totally loved it John. Very engaging from start to end. Knew nothing about Chamath before I watched this! He has some very interesting ideas. Like Andrew Yang. Agree with his point of letting the policy makers do the work. I think I'd support him if I were in California.
Glad you liked it! I have a bunch more of these "Saga" videos planned. There are so many interesting figures in Silicon Valley that never get covered from start to finish. Usually the most interesting things happened early in their career and have been forgotten about!
Hasn't aged well. Majority of the spacs are languishing badly. Not all his fault given the massive QT in '22 but still he pocketed handsomely & others were left holding those bags.
Coming from the new videos I can see a huge improvement in terms of the speaking and editing. Have you considered remaking this in the new style with better quality?
Awesome video📈
Thanks a lot!
fabulour naration and good summation.
Thanks!
I would love to hear more about successful people in tech
Can you ask Scamath when his IPOF gonna merge ?
U r a Good story teller
It looks so different watching older videos when John doesn't speak with his hands.
Well done. Also from a family of alcoholics. Has taken a long time to find success and normalcy.
For sure. Having a chip on your shoulder can be a big strength though!
We need more people like Chamath to run for office. I am an independent, but I can't vote for any Democrat at this point because when you vote for your local Democrat, you are giving power to the Democrats in Washington (remember that the majority party controls the committees in Congress) and that party is controlled by left-wing radicals who hate capitalism and Western Civilization. These radicals also hate fossil fuels and freedom of speech.
Aged horribly
7:30 is the best part
'The govt getting outta the way and letting free markets solve problems' LOL... only if every company genuinely works for a better world and we all have a single consensus on wats 'better'!😆
Don't know why this video show up on my feed now but it aged like milk..
I admire people who are thinking out of the box 📦
For sure, Chamath is definitely a creative mind!
Too bad this guy has come out saying he doesn't care about human rights abuses in Xinxiang
Chamath can help sri Lankan economy and his strategy can help all over the world to change the whole system. Sri Lanka has already faced it but eventually it will effect the whole world. We all in a game. But these games have to focus humans as a whole. So pls play Fair. Love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 ❤
4:07 did you really quote this book as If his mom drank during pregnancy and left him with some passed down brain disorder 😂
That SPAC segment aged like fine milk lmao. That Icarus comparison is definitely appropriate after all the SPAC dumpster fire losses his fans had to eat up. Big oof.
I singlehandedly increased your subscribership by 1/426th woot! You should do a report on Nikola (see Tom Nash's KZhead videos on the subject).
Thanks a lot! Appreciate the boost! I haven’t really looked into Nikola but I’ll check it out!
@@JohnCooganPlus again, start with Tom Nash's videos. I mentioned this since you reported on Theranos. The lingering question that no one has answered about Nikola: What are they going to do with all their cash?
@@RadarScreen that’s a good question. I’ll dig in.
Ok, but how did this guy got validated with 400 subs 😂😂😂
I actually made a video about it! Crazy story. Unfortunately not repeatable now. kzhead.info/sun/ZtOxl66foISoqo0/bejne.html
I was in a spac called Ridgecrest PLC run by Robert Thesiger who died in a car crash last year. This was pumped by a number of spivs who have dissapeared and now the company has just gone incommunicado - so he was a grifter albeit a dead one !
How much did he pay you?
I hope I get the opportunity to vote for Chamath, Governor of California.
He recently announced that he won't be running, but I feel like someone from tech will eventually make it on to the national political stage. It's only a matter of time. Andrew Yang is getting there now.
This story didn't age really well XD
This did not age well. Scamath, Pal I Pity Ya.
I would vote for him.
Your voice makes my throat dry
Anyone who supports Ted Cruz is dead to me. Lol.
the next governor of california - of all the things that never happened, this never happened the most.
