The tangled history of black hair discrimination in the US - BBC News

Many black Americans are embracing the natural curls and coils in their hair. But there’s been a backlash against black hairstyles in classrooms and companies across America.
Toddlers and teens have been kicked out of school because of their hair, while many adults face losing their jobs. We get to the root of why this kind of discrimination is so common - and legal - in the US and find out what it will take to stop it.

  • I've NEVER straighten my hair. I grew up in America and didn't care what anyone said. I wore cornrows, Afro puffs, pineapple, braids, etc.... to school, work literally never caring what anyone thought. I knew it was beautiful. I would not allow anyone to Gaslight me into making myself less attractive by, wearing plastic looking blonde straight ridiculous hairstyles that don't accentuate my beauty. Natural hair is sexy goddess hair. I live in Rome where everyone with Afro hair rocks it. My hair is kinky curly glorious

    • @@superhans85 Sometimes, I got teased in school and I didn't care. I didn't like their relaxed hair, it always looked unhealthy and broke off to me. When wt people in America ever said anything to me about it I knew they were jealous and I told them so. Our hair is sexy. In Italian curly, kinky hair is called "ricci" that literally means rich. Some Italian women have 3a - 4c hair and it's seen as very sexy hair here. They have salons that cater specifically to Afro hair where Italians and Afro descendants alike get their hair done. The whole poppin' curl thing doesn't exist here too much either. They like it frizzy and natural. It's a completely opposite world here. It suits me.

    • Completely agree, being who you are is beautiful; I always teach this to my children and to embrace diversity. Maybe slightly off-topic but in the U.K., we maybe have a 4/5% black population, however we’re constantly seeing panels on TV that are 50/50 or more in favour of blacks. Sometimes we can watch a football match that has 10% or less white’s playing for the clubs in a country that has quite the opposite statistics. Surely this isn’t diversity; diversity should reflect society on all levels. One cannot have their cake and eat it!?

    • When I was in high-school I wore my hair without chemicals or wig and it was to my back but in big afro. I combed, brushed it and washed my hair with shampoo and applied conditioner. My school only had two black people. Everyone laughed at me all day making fun of my hair. Teachers said I should straighten my hair and that I look weird. When I walked home a guy stopped his car offering me money thinking I looked homeless. The next year I tried to get a job the employers stared at my hair which I tied neatly in a bun. I was dressed up in formal attire of women dress suit and had job experience but all they could see is my hair. I didn't get the job and it took two years to find a job because no one liked my hair. When I wore a wig for the first time( I'm 23 now this year) and noticed immediately how people wanted to hire me and the employers commented my fake hair saying it looks nice. Imagine having to wear a fake extension of someone else or use chemicals which cause cancer to get a job or fit in. I've never been able to wake up and go somewhere without spending hours to look a certain way that fits into another races standards. When I look into the mirror I don't feel pretty. I use a light foundation and use creams to bleach my skin which has also improved my job chances. I've had 4 jobs so far and i doubt they would have hired me if I didn't look the way I do now.

  • Natural Hair doesnt just apply to Black women ! As a Middle Aged Black man who went "Natural" in his 50s, it was my "Rage" and Rebellion against White hegemonic notions of Aesthetics and "Model Minority Negro" who must always wear his hair cropped and overly groomed in making White people "comfortable" with our Blackness. I just happen to be one of those Black men with Long / curly Hair genes. For for decades kept my hair growth under raps for "professional" and career purposes.. I also cultivated my beard too that gives me a slight "rough hewn" / street look in other people's imagination. Indeed while I am PROUD of my lush wavy hair, it has made me the target of "Racial profiling" and stereotyping, accused of being a "Rasta", a ganja smoker, a shoplifter. There are always Consequences to Black persons who choose to Love and Liberate themselves from White supremacist / Respectability notions of Blackness.

    • While I dont subscribe completely to the notion that one's Hair should an absolute expression of one's Politics----it has become one for me. I don't subscribe to Black Conservative / Respectability politics, Im no longer "invested" in White Christianity, its traditions and Eurocentrism. Born in the 60s and educated in the Assimilationist 70s and 80s, I wasnt always critically aware and simply fell into White Assimilationist notions of Blackness. It was so important to look "Clean" and Respectable" back then in order to Move, succeed or simply have people (not just Whites) not Fear you or see you as a "Deviant Body". It was a long journey to wake up in shaking off the shackles of such colonized THINKING ! I remember my Outrage 10 yrs ago, over a news item when an elementary school pupil was sent home by a Black Teacher for because of their "Unruly" Natural Hair ! It was genuine WTF moment !

They co-opted Christianity and Judaism. THe oldest most complete bible is in Africa. The oldest painting of a Jewish man is from a temple (so done by a Jewish man) and he is brown skinned with an afro. Jesus was a brown man like his fellow Jews. They do all this talk about why we complain about it but will never stop actually harassing us about our hair. We live and experience the sht. And nobody else can tell us otherwise. If they do, it’s just deflection due to guilt which leads to them acting hostile.

    • I lived in New York in the 60s as a child. I had a short afro or rather my hair was short, natural and combed back. I never felt inferior. My mother also sent me to school in plaits sometimes and nothing happened and i went to an all white school. It was private however. I cannot remember being discriminated against for my natural hair but then again America may have gone backward since then. Even in university my hair was natural most times, and that was in Chicago. However, I wasn't trying to get into the corporate world and left America soon after university but I guess I would have had to conform somewhat . I have seen curly haired white people being made fun of but mostly in England. I doubt however that they were discriminated against although one co-worker who was not black was asked to comb her curls out. It's such a shame really. I guess I was rather lucky or perhaps I didn't care. I honestly cannot remember my hair being an issue in school, but then life may have been different in New York.

Knowing history and the moves by Aveda are AWESOME but putting others in a box based on skin or in this case hair is no better than what's been done to you. Thanks for sharing this and the info on the laws, and Aveda (so we can all support them).

One "exceptional" White person who doesnt subscribe to "racist" thinking or actions, doesnt exonerate you from the GROUP's history of discriminatory behaviour. As a Middle-Aged Black man, I had to suffer many indignations and social consequences of my Blackness ---- even before I went "Natural" and cultivated my Salt n Pepper beard in my 50s ! And it isnt just Whites who discriminate against Black hair but also Non - White POCs that I wont detail. Cheers from Canada

    • @BlackLivesMatter I don't know if you are just beginning to learn about being an ally, or if you are just another racist troll online? But in case you are trying, then understand the beginning of learning is to come away from the main problem White racist have which is a god complex. Understand you don't know. Stop, sit, and listen. Most White people participate in hair discrimination the way White people participate in most forms of racism by reaping the benefit and remaining silent when individuals speak against the racism they experience, but moving against any structural change being proposed. For example voting for people who are against the crown act, or honesty in teaching. Understand what you feel individually is a fantasy that is in direct opposition to the history/reality of the US.

      @kimwilliams5165@kimwilliams5165 Жыл бұрын
    • Also BTW forcing BIPoC to deal with every White person individually as a way to exempt yourself from responsibility for structural racism is in fact a racist tactic used by racist White people since the 1950s. You benefit from racism by virtue of being White, thus you have a responsibility to destroy the system that oppresses others and benefits you. That's if you really are opposed to racism and not just paying lip service to an idea.

My God😬😱😱 I am Ugandan and a male but I have been persecuted because of my hair color and fast hair growth. There's a lot of discrimination in hair types. People with wavy, curlier hair like Ethiopian, Somali etc get to keep their hair wildly grown but me with my brownish C3, I am demanded by society to get rid of it. This is in school, workplaces, home and everywhere. Being yourself is an attraction of criticism.

  • Great job, thanks BBC! My reaction: it’s great that more and more black people are taking pride in our hair. Not to be dismissive of hair discrimination, but when I have grown my hair out, negative comments have primarily come from other black people. (Not counting a Central European guy in college who compared afro hair to pubic hair given how drunk he was and the fact that I was not offended at the time.) I’ve spent a lot of time outside the U.S. and have met people around the world who love our hair. I’ll never forget how a Kazakh friend recounted watching the National Geographic Channel as a kid and admiring afro hair styles. I also found a great barber in northern Mexico who learned to cut afro hair on his own watching Instagram tutorials. Black people have a lot of untapped cultural soft power and we have to embrace it, there is nothing unprofessional or unkempt about afros, braids, etc. and I sincerely believe that most educated Americans, especially those under 40, fully understand this.

I've been to Latin America many times and people (mostly Brazil) would be obsessed with European beauty. I'm a white dude, I've got light hair etc and people would call me "Lindo!" When I would ask why for such kind compliments, especially from the ladies, they would say "Voce têm um rosto definido, um nariz bonito, olhos azuis" In other words, I have a defined, Eurocentric face with a pretty small nose. I asked one person why black beauty was viewed down and she said it bluntly they have "cabelo crespo" and they have "nariz grande" in other words nappy hair and afro-facial features (nose). It shocked me how far behind some people are in our society.
