    • Omg absolutely this, in all honesty, Legion for me was the last expansion that felt really innovative, like it breathed some fresh life into WoW. I am not 12 years old like i was when i was when i started playing in TBC, but i was just as excited as i was back then to go home and boot up WoW. My problem with the following expansions is that they all felt like scuffed versions of Legion especially BFA. I don't know what the problem is, but it feels like Blizzard is so afraid of pulling another WoD, that nowadays they're constantly trying to reinvent Legion instead of making an expansion that has the same impact that Legion once did. They just feel so formulaic that i'm sort of tired of it by now.

  • This format suits you well. Your voice and knowledge makes the reaction far more interesting. I'm glad we were able to take a look at these numbers. These last few months have been really hopeful and have led the game in a great direction I haven't seen in almost a decade. The lore was great and well-paced this expansion, with some great individual questlines. I don't particularly care for the Dracthyr or their place in the lore, but concepts like catching up with the flights and several lead characters passing the torch to the next generation were executed really well. I'm very happy with the communication nowadays. Even if War Within isn't great, it's very refreshing to know where blizz's head is at.

I've been a WoW player since 2004, played all the expansions and seeing new "content" systems as the best thing since slice bread which to me fail, look at the BFA Azerite system or Choreghast in SL. When a game feels like a chore that to me is out of touch. SOD feels pretty good right now as its a flavor of WoW Classic. I think the idea of dumbing down content is their way to lowering the barrier to entry which isolates the other player base who want harder content.

    @saitama741@saitama74120 күн бұрын
  • I personally think that the huge success of WoW was based on the continued world building of "Warcraft 1-3". The more "alien" stuff they added and the further they got away from the core concept, the less people want to play it. In TBC there is Illidan, in Wotlk there is Arthas in MoP there's.... pandas and monks? On another side note, a lot of the expansions degraded the quality of the game and discontinued successful concepts from past games/expansions. This is something I think they have done consciously, as they focused more on trying to create an addiction (to keep people subbed) than to create a good game. One interesting example to show how they fail in doing this even today, is Season of Discovery phase 3. In phase 1 and 2, you could raid at least twice a week with 10 man raids and the bosses would drop around 2 items each. In phase 3, they made it so that you can only raid once a week and in order to compensate for this, each boss now drops around 4 items each... so far so good. However, they also doubled the size of the raid to 20 man - what this means is that they actually cut the amount of loot you can get from raids per week in half, despite officially promoting it as an increase of loot. The raid loot in phase 3 is barely an upgrade to the raid loot from p2 as well, making it feel even more discouraging. I do think that the way to go would be a "classic+", where you go from classic+ and add new content. I think that if SoD would continue and they add stuff like m+, new raids, better rewards, then it would most likely be my to go game for a long future.

  • Your passion surrounding WoW was a big part of the spark that got me back into the game, roping my fiance in with me along the way. We've been playing mostly modern WoW since legion, I will say on the gearing point that DF has been a huge step up. There's a long list of weapons with fairly unique effects starting with Fyr'alath and Nasz'uro but also extending to non-legendaries like Kharnalex for evokers and Neltharax for hunters. There's even a cloak with no stamina that steals stats from allies when they take damage (Voice of the Silent Star). So on the gearing point I think Dragonflight has massively improved. It's a tricky balancing act: in a modern, somewhat competitive game having iconic gear can be a struggle. You bring a measured perspective as always, @MadSeasonShow. Missed your videos when you were on break.

  • I played the og WoW through Cata. Can't remember what happened that made me stop. Might have been my dad cutting the sub. Jumped back in for the transition from BFA to SL. Got through to the endgame of SL and raiding, but promptly stopped there. The endgame zones were awful, filled with horrible, super janky terrain you couldn't fly through. Upgrading your gear meant dungeons/raids, followed by hundreds of hours of farming the atrocious endgame zones. But worse than that, you could only level your gear in a season, and leveling it further was disabled once the season switched. So you had to sink those hundreds of hours in a limited time frame or be penalized for it. The tower rogue-lite gimmick locked me out of the best boosts for my class, as they were solely offered on days I had both school and work, kneecapping my ability to do dungeons and raids. The story could have been written by a 5 year-old and I still don't know what was going on because I never got to finish raids because of how heftily it handicapped people with normal lives outside of WoW. It was awful. No wonder their subs sank like a rock.

  • The cost to make the spectral horse was less than $5,000 (probably less than $2,000 in actual employee billable hours and $3,000 for cooperate bloat) and StarCraft 2 cost to make was never released but for 7 years of development would have been very pricy, so they probably had to sell millions of copies before it broke even, verses the 330ish to recover the horse cost. Then you have to consider that the Servers to run SC2 multiplayer and to allow players to download the game also cost money to operate. So its very believable that the horse made them more money.

The [Ouroboreal Necklet] is another highly sought after item with unique effects that I was ecstatic to finally get. There are a lot of unique effect named items in DF and I’ve loved that coming back. • There is almost no way the estimates given for that new graph are accurate. They extrapolated those numbers by assuming a single summary line in a quarterly talking about Legion's performance means that Legion at the same point had near the same subs as WoD. Except quarterly reports are purposefully vague/ambiguous for this reason because 'performance' can mean anything. It could mean revenue, avg MAUs, retention rates, or whatever metric they can find that they can put a positive spin on. That's why they stopped reporting the sub count in the first place. Also, the estimates make no sense in context to the old graph. WoD was in total free fall losing more subs than any other point in the history of wow. So somehow it magically stabilize and gained subs over the 6-8 month gap between these two graphs? I don't think so. Basically, subtract a million from all those estimates and its probably closer to the real number.

  • How sure can we be the numbers' representation is correct, though? We have no reference point for the Y-axis; nor if it starts at 0 or not. Some of Bellular's theory stems from an earnings call back during Legion, where they said Legion performed slightly better than WoD. But that doesn't necessarily mean there were more subscribers; it could simply mean more revenue due to more MTX. Blizzard has surely figured out how to extract more money from their customers over the years, without increasing the number of customers.

  • 25:40 I think the loot in Dragonflight is MUCH improved over BFA and SL For example the latest Raid Amidrasill. Drops 2 2h caster staffs which have primary+2 secondary stats BUT in the same Raid you can drop Dreambinder from Nymue a staff that has an on use effect which consists of a 2 second channel that deals aoe dmg and also roots the target and slows enemys around the target by 80% Basically every class now has cool chase items in the raid. In dungeons there also drops unique loot now. In Dawn of the Infinite there is another caster Staff with on use effect that you can only use in execute range (35%) and deals extra dmg In Aberrus (the second raid of Dragonflight) the final Boss drops an extremly rare cloak which contrary to all other cloaks has no stamina but it has a passive effect: It steals secondary stats from your teammates and gives the secondarys stats to you for 8 seconds+ a bonus amount. So its a net benefit but you loose health and you fuck your teammates a bit. Its really quite interesting how they are managing gearing right now. I could go on there are much more items like this but i only play caster so i dont know them all in detail

  • "The wall of 'No' - I don't know the reason why" Very simple - because they want to look like smart boys and to be on the winning side. Blizzard answered "No" before very definitively, so in those people's eyes they are sucking up to the winning argument by repeating it and justifying it. It's like those small loser guys in School who follow the biggest bully and suck up to him all the time. It's the same mentality. Agree with the winning argument - push down and ridicule all opposition. These are the same people who will defend multi-billion corporations for any decisions they make

  • Despite its flaws, Dragonflight was exactly what I wanted out of WoW of being a light-hearted adventure like the Vanilla days. The new features were awesome, the vibes were perfectly on point, we have never had so much content in one expansion EVER and the Dracthyr might be one of my favorite additions to the roster of playable races. It was easily my favorite expansion to date and I've been playing since TBC and I am sorely going to miss it once it is over. I acknowledge it isn't for everyone, but it was the perfect expansion for me.

    • yeah significantly more bots now than during vanilla. just like warmsne, they don't subtract the bots from the data

      @Bronimin@Bronimin20 күн бұрын
    • No? Because what makes way more sense is that bot populations are likely more correlated to player count than game version. It is unlikely that, for example, the same number of bots exist for a version of the game with 100k active players vs one with 3million. Bots supply the demand that exists, and if there is less demand, there is is little incentive to run similar numbers of bots on each version. There is, after all, some cost associated with running each bot, and botters are in business to make money.

Use those until the card gets reported. The blizz gets a refund notice and has to cancel the sub. It probably goes up and down, but a ton of accounts are refunds.

    • 1.) Can't do it forever, will get stagnant. They as a business logically speaking have to do something. 2.) People will play it. Maybe not in the numbers you suspect, but people will. This is coming from someone who isn't currently interested in WoW, played it for half of my life. 3.) Wotlk isn't the end all be all of all videogames. Good game, good version of it, but let's stop giving it more credit than it's due and let go of the past. Even superfans wouldn't play Wotlk back to back for 10 years - people will get sick of it eventually or just get bored. Think about every patch cycle, and most times that's only a few months and folks STILL complain about getting bored and having nothing to do. It's not sustainable.

    • @@tyrnriscards6238 Solid points, yet those points ignore the objective reality that private servers running Vanilla for well over a decade only lost their players due to Blizzard shutting them down with threats of legal action to get those players onto Classic. The people who play to burn through content as fast as they can are always going to run out of content. That's just the reality of that play style. Meanwhile, altoholics like myself, is who Classic should be for. We don't play to get to the end as quick as we can. We play to explore and enjoy the world. We're the kind of players that made private Vanilla servers feasible for years and years and years. On top of all that, between work, adult responsibilities, relationships, etc., quite a few of us don't have time to spend 40+ hours a week playing WoW.

  • The difference in loot is so surface level it hurts my brain. Not being able to name the items has nothing to do with the impact of the loot, but the sheer number of items you have. I can recall several items of loot from cataclysm and beyond but the names escape me because there are millions of items. The loot all being main stat-secondary stat is not even true becuase there is usually a raid in every expansion that gives unique procs, but you could never remember the names because as previously stated, there are millions of items.

  • A rising tide lifts all boats I'm a 95% retail player, but I'm still so glad classic exists. I got the nostalgia hit I needed from it, I still have it as an option. And aside from that, the classic community saved the part if the game I enjoy, retail. To frame any of this as "retail vs classic" is moronic.

  • Two weeks too late for this but I have some points I'd like to mention from my POV. Don't know if you or anyone will reply, Mad, but I just want to get my thoughts in before it has been a month before I comment. Your comparison to Dragonflight (DL) and MoP, and how you likened them to having Pixar vibes, made me feel many players just see the cinematic and themes of the expansions to judge them face value as both expansions got dark and deep than what the marketing gives us credit for. MoP had some pretty dark moments when it came to the Mogu, U'shaarj, and the Alliance-Horde War, the latter of which had amazing storytelling IMO because of the different perspectives of the two factions and the Purge of Dalaran showing this. And while DL never got as dark or even edgy, it certainly did have its moments; the Blue Dragonflight reuniting and finding peace for Malygos and Sindragosa, and Ebyssian serving as the voice of reason for what is left of the Blacks were personal favorites of mine in recent WoW storylines. DL also serves as a really good sequel to Cataclysm IMO as you certainly do feel the dark legacy of Deathwing for the first several (in-universe) days you are on the Dragon Isles - the two plotlines I mentioned with the Blues and Blacks are related to this both directly and indirectly. It, along with BFA, were also the most "down to earth" recent expansions when it comes to their overarching story. But that's just my two cents. As for Shadowlands (SL) and its theme surrounding death and afterlife. I argue that, for whatever medium the media is, themes surrounding death and the afterlife are barely well written since they are often powerful tools for a writer as you said. One thing in Warcraft is that you can tell how powerful a character is not just their overall power but also how hard it is to kill them or how their legacy affects everyone else. The effects of Gul'dan and Kael'thas hit hard for their respective races and we see this to this day, even with AU Gul'dan coming in. But seeing Kael come back in SL wasn't necessary as he served his purpose as a character from WC3 up to BC, with his legacy just being a good reminder. Though cool he found redemption in SL, it was also unnecessary. As for how hard they are to kill, some characters like Illidan are just so empowered by whatever energy they have is that they are almost invincible. She's not a major character compared to the rest, but High Inquisitor Whitemane would also fall under this as she was just such a powerful priest that she needed to be stabbed with enchanted swords to stay dead instead of reviving - she was like the Light's version of a lich. However, despite being the weakest and underwhelming of the expansions, I am actually willing to give SL some respite solely because it was during this expansion that the sex scandals were shown on the surface. So the bad writing, or even lack of writing and content in general, may have just been the writers trying to salvage what they had to work with. As for Legion and how it hurt BFA, I actually felt that it was meant to be the last expansion in WoW history before they moved onto something else. Allow me to explain... Legion had a really good 'end of the world,' apocalypse storyline; we got to use powerful weapons from previous characters in Warcraft's history; in-universe, we essentially become the new heroes because of our deeds and power gained (Artifacts and legendaries) to replace those lost; and we finally got to actually take the fight directly to the Legion's front yard of Argus, and even pushed them back to the point where Sargeras (And actual god of destruction and war) was sealed. When Legion ended and we got the buildup of Azerite and a second war between the Alliance and Horde, I genuinely thought that Blizzard was leading us towards a Warcraft 4. Even though this turned out to be false in the BFA reveal trailer, there were will moments during that expansion that made me feel Warcraft 4 would still happen; there is essentially a proxy war between Zandalar and Kul Tiras; both factions want to harvest Azerite across the world; Warfronts were about to kick off, or seemed like they would (There was one planned for Quekl'thalas). I thought BFA would serve as an introduction to Warcraft 4, with its most major conflicts, and the war's end, taking place in it. But that is me going on a tangent so I'll stop there. If anyone happens to read all of this, feel free to reply.

It makes the game so much more alive when you actually have to manage your mount and traverse your environments.
