The evolution of black representation in film

Just as race relations in the U.S. have changed throughout history, so have the roles of minorities in film. It wasn't always pretty, kind or fair.

  • It is so difficult to find any coverage on the improvements of Black characters in the film industry. I am writing a paper about the current stereotypes in the film industry and how some people think black characters are still stereotypes and how others are believing that the characters have improved to more complex fully-realized characters. Sadly, no one seems to think there has been a noteworthy change or improvement to Black characters in movies. This is the only thing I can find that just barely mentions the efforts and success of Black movies and characters.

    • There has been improvement. But there still are a lot of stereotypes and truly disturbing representation of black people in the media. There are movies like Black Panther that truly stand out, but it's all the other tv shows, movies it's the lack of options. Why can't all our movies and tv shows representation Black people shine just as bright as it, and why can't Black people be in charge our narrative, just like in Black Panther.

    • @@french_fries9133 I totally agree with your frustrations and desires for more authentic and true improvement for Black characters, especially in this era of non-blk ppls attempts of diversity and inclusion where they often misrepresent us or just don't hit as well. I think we are in a rise that has been growing since 2016 and had a more significant boom in 2018. It's just a little harder nowadays to find blk shows and films that are written, produced, or directed by blk ppl that aren't already famous or a part of a diversity campaign. Idk what films you like, but maybe be on the lookout for Neptune Frost in select theaters. It's a blk film that looks amazing

Like there are so many talented black writers and directors. But they don't get taught in the film department. Well not at my school.

So all these famous virtue signalers could easily pool there money together and make an award show where merit is the only way people win the award or do the obvious which is exactly what white people did and make it almost exclusively black nominees. Honestly if that's how u want black people to feel uplifted hey more power to u but if these award shows nowadays are "excluding" black people and everyone else did it ever occur to u that there weren't many quality roles for poc that year. u would need to show evidence of discrimination in current day Hollywood.

It seems a bit of a reach to assess someone's IQ from a factual statement they made. I wonder why you felt the need to do that? It's ineffective at making me look stupid... but it also doesn't make you look very smart. If you feel like your point of view is valid, why not just share it in a civil manner, instead of throwing playground insults?

      @janinelindsey-williams1927@janinelindsey-williams19273 жыл бұрын
    • @@willibiii0804 Thank you for your advice. You didn't ask me what I meant by what I said. You assumed that there is no evidence of discrimination (which is not actually my job to provide to you). You also assumed that I am not "being the change" - when you don't know me, and don't know whether or not I'm involved behind the scenes. All based on a simple response, which I am here to support with evidence, as per your request. There seems to be another implied assumption that I am calling for awards for black people in a manner which is entitled. I'm not. But I am talking about a status quo which clearly does not affect you or your interests. Parasite just won Best Foreign Language film. It was an historical moment. It doesn't occur to you that what I hope for increases the visibility of MORE than just black people and exposes more viewers to incredible talent? Why have you assumed that MY comment was about black people only? Why have you assumed that I am not in support of the original comment, in an aspirational sense? On one hand you suggest that there's only discrimination with the Oscars if I can provide evidence. On the other, you conflictingly suggest (tongue-in-cheek, I'm sure) that black people should "do exactly what the Oscars did" and create an exclusively black awards show. You ignored the fact that I included the qualifier "YET" in my comment, which indicates change is happening, but the journey is incomplete. It's best summarised with the quote from the financial times (link below): "The Academy is growing more diverse, but progress is slow". That's exactly what I meant when I said "...this hasn't been achieved YET". Please see the link below for supporting data:www.ft.com/content/ca2e8368-48e6-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441

Spawned the French fresh Prince to come out with his own arranged attack in the street. Mayb he felt too privileged in the black community. He was from France. Rich and successful. And he was gay. He had it too easy but needed some sympathy when he was around others who tell him he's so white cos that's what they do if you are non white but still "privileged" I bet if you trace that man's ancestry you'd find his family were probably masters. Just like Britain's version. Mr Marvin Humes. His episode on show Who do you think you are, Marvin Humes. He started with a 10min rant against oppressors and how proud he is of his family for providing him with everything to become the man he is today. After 10min of it they showed him his oldest ancestor they could trace. A slave owner in Jamaica who quadrupled his lands/holdings. Marvin was mortified lol. Its tv gold he refused to call him grand father after they told him that. Then the show took him to Jamaica to visit another branch of his family who still own that land. So his speech about oppressors was his own family. Sir Lewis Hamilton is the funniest though. He went one knee stirred up bs in F1 braided his hair and everything he went all in SUDDENLY. But the Queen offers him a medal and a title to join the elites ranks and yepp. He was back on one knee again. Hilarious. Proof its just a tool to get what you want. Once its in reach u turn.
