  • My taste buds with DRY when you released that 1st pompano. Fillet baked with lemon, butter, a little salt and pepper. Congratulations and best wishes to you and your team at Bama Beach Bum Outdoors.

  • Frozen prawns (shrimp) are THE biggest selling bait in Australia. Every tackle shop, most service (gas) stations and lots of supermarkets sell them. In my area there's a prohibiton against using uncooked supermarket ones for bait because of outbreaks of whitespot disease. We get different versions of pomano here. We've got Snubnose Dart (Trachinotus blochii) and Giant Oystercracker (Trachinotus anak) which get to about 45 and 70 inches long respectively, although such big ones are pretty rare. I think yours are the Florida Pompano (Trachinotus carolinus). It can be crazy the similarities of fish between Australia and the US. What messes with my head is the fish that are so similar, yet have some outstanding differences, such as whiting (looking basically the same as ours, but different mouths and are not only a different species, but also different families and orders!!!), redfish are incredibly like our mulloway, snook are a lot like a barramundi and we even have tarppon, but they only grow to about 24 inches long.

    • Oh def your mangrove jacks look almost identical to our mangrove snapper and trout we call grouper even barramundi look like our snook down in south Florida (although those are different species they are very similar)

    • @@mrsuarez430 I'm pretty sure that our Mangrove Jacks are the same species as your Mangrove Snapper. They're both Lutjanus argentimaculatus and related to things like the Mutton, Red and Lanes Snappers. We've got a few Lutjanids here just as you do. They're good fighters and also good eating mostly. Some are known carriers of ciguatera though.
