Star Wars: Premonition | Award Winning Lightsaber Duel | SaberComp 2022

2022 ж. 30 Қар.
2 819 791 Рет қаралды

After seeing a glimpse into the future, a young mother must stand against the dark forces of fate.
My entry into SaberComp 2022. Fun fact, this is the 20th anniversary of the contest, and my 7th entry into that contest.
It was a blast making this, and the location is one of my all time favorite places to shoot. Everywhere I turned the camera it looked amazing.
Also, it was so fun to have my daughter Emily in this. She had so much fun being on a Star Wars set for a couple days.

    • The thing I loved about that was when she gets stabbed. She, in that moment, lost the light. Once she maimed him, as a Jedi, she should've waited for him to either surrender or force further conflict. Instead, she chases the conflict by attacking him, leaving an opening of vulnerability. In that moment, she lost the protection of the light and entered the dark and paid the price. Honestly phenomenal writing if that was intended.

Best lightsaber duel in the star wars movies was in Ep1. Ep3's was great, too, but single blade vs lightstaff introduced an entirely new dynamic. That was an inspiration to fan film makers, and they have been one-uping it, and each other, ever since.

    • @J. E. M Sequels? When did this happen and why wasn't I told? :D I know what the OP was referring to. But let's face it, the duels in the sequels barely qualified to use the word. Just some arbitrary saber swinging and clashing just to tick off "Lightsaber scene" from the list of Star Wars tropes they had to put in to barely earn the right to slap "Star Wars" on the label. But hey... It's good to know that if I want a good lightsaber duel fix, There's all these great fan productions that not only do them right, but are constantly daring to mix things up to keep it fresh.

      @Opnn8d1@Opnn8d1 Жыл бұрын
  • First, I want to say how amazing this is! The choreography is fantastic! I love how the battle started with him forcing her saber down to throw her off. I love how her vision showed us what was expected to happen, but when she broke his saber shaft, we thought she was changing the future, only to have her vision actually come true, only to be saved by her daughter. That was fantastic writing! The lightsaber sounds and styles were incredible as well. I am a big fan of the thicker sabers (unlike Star Wars Rebels thin ones) that really punch the sound when they ignite. It gives me goosebumps! Also, I love how the daughter and guy have similar hair which opens the door for so many theories like the girl isn't the mother but rescuing the girl from her Dark Side father or that the girl and guy are both the child's parents. Now, a few things I noticed that took me out of the scene for a second. When she was stabbed with his lightsaber, I wish it looked more like the saber was going into her. Maybe her clothes would have a circle with embers and char where the saber burned through them. I know this wasn't a high budget film or anything, but just having the light stop seemed not on par with the rest of the special effects. Also, when she drops her lightsaber, you make a point of showing her drop it almost right next to her (5:33) only to have it moved several feet away from her (5:42) only to have it right back next to her (5:55). Not a major issue, but it was definitely noticeable. My last constructive criticism is about the lethality of lightsabers throughout Star Wars in recent years. How did she get stabbed by a laser sword (which would melt your insides) and live and he gets stabbed by a metal pipe and dies almost instantly? How is it that Kylo Ren, The Grand Inquisitor, Reva (twice), Sabine Wren, Cal Kestis, and now this girl all survive what should be killing blows and yet Qui-Gon gets grouped with Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto in the 1 Stab=Instant Death club. Overall, fantastic video though!!!

The force premonition showing what looks like defeat, technically being accurate but leaving out the most crucial detail of how it truly ends was great and is a much more 4-6 faithful use of the force than ANYTHING it's been used for since Disney took over. THIS is what the Kylo/Rey dynamic could have been like, instead I was just bored anytime they were on screen together and wondering when they would kiss each other the whole time. • My God. Stumbled on this and what a goddamn work of cinema. There are so many things that make this good. Your shoot location, the color grading, the really subtle lens flares. When the sith shows up and we first see him the in reflection of the water. I think what makes this so much more effective and captivating than other lightsaber shorts I've seen is from the very beginning, each moment of the fight is advancing the story telling around this character. She kneels in the beginning to be more one with the force, to dispel the fear she feels. Also, the choreography isn't just people bashing sabers together. There are a ton of little story beats in each bit. She's trying to break his staff, he's trying to use the force to throw her off balance. Also, there are real stakes. The emotional center of this piece is her son. We as the audience don't want to see him see her die. Fucking incredible work, not just from a cinematography perspective, but from a storytelling perspective as well.

  • Well done compared to Disney movies. Critiques (as all the comments are heaping praises): - Sith weapon just seemed unnecessary and poorly used. It is built like a reach/spear weapon yet he wields it like a sword. The whole time he is hitting her with the back side of it you keep thinking "Well if that was darth maul's weapon she would be dead". - You demonstrate the physical difference between them early in the fight, but then quickly ignore it for the rest of the fight. It is not believable a woman who looks to be a good 50-80 pounds lighter is standing toe to toe in a grapple fight. She needed to be more nimble or leveraging herself better to win such encounters as the duel doesn't show that at all. Or even just be more force proficient, yet it seems like her opponent is using all the force powers. - Young kid using a force power proficiently and powerfully to stop a fully trained Sith warrior... No... Just no. That is as cringe worthy as any of the Disney Star Wars. Yeah you wanted a twist from the premonition of her own death. But that is easily pulled off by her using the force in an unexpected way. Might be that you show throughout the fight that she isn't able to do something he can, but she manages to pull it off in that moment of death. She is as young as Anakin Skywalker who was a force savant and even he wasn't pulling that type of crap in Phantom Menace. - Why the hell did she not pull her own lightsaber to her for the killing stroke? Had her saber been shown to be broken, or maybe under his foot? There should have been some camera shot showing that her saber was unreachable/unusable. -There is also a odd edit where she loses her lightsaber earlier in the fight but it's not apparent when she loses it. Important moments like getting disarmed need a quick camera closeup so that the viewer doesn't miss it in the chaos of the action. - Minor gripe, but Sith should have had some make-up/cosmetic. Use of the dark side should have some physical manifestations. In terms of acting, though these are probably not actors, he needed to show more emotion. - I have never cared for force choke used on another force wielder. This seems to come up in fan creations and the video games. I've always gotten the impression that if used on a force wielder they could just counter it with their own force making it pointless. I would be willing to accept it if the person is untrained (like the child) or they suffered a serious head blow that makes them disoriented (like a force throw like Darth Vader uses in Empire Strikes back, clocks her in the head). Else it just comes across as cheap fan service.

  • Felt absolutely natural. Fantastic work! I think these fan-based works are often exceeding what is coming out of the professional studios. The day is coming when the fan base will have their day on the big screen. I can feel it... and it's not a bad feeling. Looking forward to more!

    • I echo that sentiment wholeheartedly...to this day, the 'Grayson' fanmade trailer is memorable as one of the most impactful DC trailers to date (came out maybe 2002-05 can't recall lol). This was composed very impressively, down to the offspring having the Force, similar to the Child (Grogu) in his introduction to Mando. Passionate projects like these can't go unnoticed by the masses forever--the industry needs to evolve.

  • This is so well made from the sound design to the choreography. The music is spot on, and the editing and cinematography is executed properly to allow the scene to breath and flow. There was more emotional impact in this one video than the whole of the sequel trilogy, great work from everyone involved.

  • Blows my mind how fans are ultimately better at creating a story along with better cinematography than Disney. This is great.

  • Yo let’s go badass Jedi mom! This was an awesome short. It also proves what I have thought about the Jedi for a long time. That attachments and emotions are not evil. Love, be it compassion or passion, can be a great motivator for keeping you in the good side.

  • Might've been short, but you literally crammed so much glorious star wars feels into this video. I actually began to tear up with the ending. Bravo, and Encore. This was amazing!
